Just completed a CA Subject exam - Subtest 106 [English Language Arts]. I started watching this video to supplement my studies. One question on the exam asked me to select the prepositional phrase from four options Only one option started with a preposition and ended with a noun [smile]. I passed my exam with a little help from this video. Thank you.

Morley hid his books under the book. In this example can we consider that example as an adverbial clause, because it response the question of where did Morley hid his books?
@christopherdysart11367 жыл бұрын
I thought that it was an adverb phrase as well.
@roxanjanedetorres31075 жыл бұрын
I think, the word it modifies is HID, not the book. It answers the question where, so it's an adverb phrase.

there are 2 kinds of prep phrases, the ones acting as adjectives and the ones acting as adverbs. the first ones answer questions such as "which one?" or "what kind of..?" and the other ones answer questions like "how, when, where, why, etc..". in order to this, the prep phrase "under the bed" modifies the noun 2books" because it's giving information about the position of the book. so, which ones(books)? the ones under the bed. according to this, the prepositional phrase "under the bed" is acting as an adjective. Hope this is useful

this have been a good video for me in order to understand this class, however in the minute 5:10 you focus only in the prepositional phrase after the party but do not say anything about the prepositonal phrase to headquarters.......and you do the same in the following examples....so this create in me some questions Did I miss something or do I have to analize the phrase "to headquarter" by myself?...regards from Panama city Panama...central america.

00:12 What about adjectival phrase? Verb phrase? Noun phrase? 01:07 What? How can a prepositional phrase be an adjective phrase? Isn't it that phrases are named after their HEADS? What function they have in a sentence is a whole another story. 03:23 And this is total nonsense. The prepositional phrase "under the bed" doesn't modify books. It tells us where did he hide them. If anything, I would say it is some sort of an object complement.
@abdelilaharhmir67394 жыл бұрын
Nope. I can help you. Well. Morley is the subject Hid is the verb What does he hid? His books What books Books that are under the bed He did put them . So under the bed is prepositional phrase acts as Adjective phrase because it tells you more details about the books and also describes the verb hid So it plays on two rolls 😂 Adjective phrase Adverb phrase

Could some one help me to explain why the 2nd example "He hid his book under the bed" The prepositional phrase under the bed is Adj , I thought it were adv to add information "where he hid his book" to a verb hide
@jorgelimon52498 жыл бұрын
That second example, to me seems to be an adverb phrase. The verb hid is modified by the information under the bed. Where were the books hidden? The books were hidden under the bed. I am not an english major, I am just practicing english grammar. If the sentence were changed to: He hid his book which was under the bed. Now the question to ask is: Which book did he hide? Well he hid the book that was under the bed. I am not convinced with how I reworded this. Under the bed, he hid his book. I am convinced that this is an adverb phrase. Since the adverb phrase can be moved around, i have more proof that the example refers to an adverb phrase.
