Your trick with the regular can opener, is that you moved it around slowly, most of us hook it on and bend up once, with force. I’ll try to be more careful in the future, even tho I haven’t gotten to the point where I needed to consider reusing a lid for pressure canning. I always mark my lids and reuse for storing and dehydrating. Good demonstration of need to use care no matter which device we’re using.

I personally just don't reuse lids at all except for vacuume sealing. I remember how the gasket USE to be on them, very thick and I might have reused them but NOT todays lids. I have all 3 methods of openers and prefer my pry a lid above all. Even if I get in a hurry the pry a lid has never damaged a lid.

Great video!! When the country ran out of lids ( I had 8 boxes of new lids) I decided to do an experiment on reusing lids on pressure canned beans. It worked fine. So when I ate those I used the same lids again to pressure can beans. It worked. I. On my 4th time now on reusing the same lids. Out of 20 lids I've been doing this with, I've kept 2 jars back from the first experiment to see if the seal would last. It's been almost 2 years and they are still sealed. My second experiment was reusing food jars from the store with their own pop top lids for waterbath canning. All of those have worked and seal just fine too. I was surprised! Some are on the 3rd time around. I decided I needed to know incase it really got bad. I figured if it's a matter of canning up my garden or letting it go to waste because I'm out of lids, I'm going to reuse them. Not one has failed so far. I have not tried pressure canning in store food jars with the pop top lids yet. But I will 😁. I've also put narrow store food jars with pop top lids in a wide mouth Mason jar and vacuumed sealed those just fine. That way I'm not wasting my canning jars on dry goods. Your canister looks like it might work better for that. I think I need to get one. Thank you for a great video .

I'm seeing lids in the stores again after 2 years. I reused them for soups since I eat a jar daily. Now I'm only saving lids that button stays up, not down and needs to be pushed up. I'm hopeful that I won't need to reuse in the future!

I bought the Pry-a-lid about 2 years ago and the price was less than half the cost they are now. I was surprised at the current cost. The great thing about this tool is that it helps open those hard to open jars from the grocery store. I bought a Pry-a-lid opener for my 80 year old Dad and he can easily open all lids.

That is what I do too. Reuse on dry goods. Also have notice that the sealant is thinner than it used to be. I am finding that I have about a 25% unsealing a month or two down the road with the dry sealed stuff.

I need to get a prying gadget. I did find a great buy at a local church thrift shop. Set of three vacuum cannisters like new for less than a buck. at first I thought it was just storage cannisters with the burp top. Then I realised after I got home what they really were. They were on my wish list. God is good. what a blessing of a find.

In the height of the inability to get lids I thought I'd do an experiment and reuse two of them. I keep a stock of used ones because I use them to cover jars where I store other things (no sealer thingie). For my experiment I used broth that I knew I could eat very soon. They sealed. I used that broth, I think within two weeks. Then my daughter went to a garage sale where she got a bunch of never used canning lids brand new in the boxes so I have never again tried to reuse lids. I think it's best to follow the recommended guidelines on this and just use them once. However, in a great emergency....

I reuse lids for dry storage and vacuum sealing. I have found that the trick to not crimping the lid edge with the can opener is to not PRY the lid back in the first place. I use the same turning of the jar shown in this video; however, I PULL the lid STRAIGHT UP up in several places until the suction breaks. No edge crimping! I keep a stash of used lids that are categorized for possible reuse. I carefully check the gasket condition on each one. If I find an old one that I inadvertently crimped (early days), I simply roll that section of the lid (hard) back and forth along my hard countertop. The soft metal rounds itself back into place. If I do reuse a lid for pressure canning (rare), I keep like with like. A carrot lid on more carrots, applesauce on more applesauce, etc. I generally don't reuse a lid from meats, and I will NEVER reuse a lid from canned chicken. Nor would I reuse a lid from canned fish. Rejected lids become craft projects, so there's never any waste! I have never had a metal lid (new or used) fail in storage. I've been canning since 2015. P.S. A shoutout for the tip on using alcohol to remove the Sharpie Marker writing! I've been using acetone nail polish remover, but I have far more alcohol! Hugs!

I've been tempted with this shortage to reuse lids that appear to have the goo in the rim still in good condition but I'm just wary enough to not want it to fail and lose the jar of food I worked so hard for. Not worth it. I do use those lids for dry food storage like you do. Interesting how the disease has affected so many areas of our lives.

This was terrific! Loved the comparisons. I have a stash of "just in case" lids. It is possible that some of them have never actually been used, as I was not very organized when I first started canning. I hate to throw them away because they are in good condition. I figure there must be some sort of project I'll be able to use them for "someday", lol. But I agree that it doesn't make sense to put the time and money (and time is also money) into canning good food, then lose your product because you skimped on the lids. Thanks for posting! 😊💖

Use the tattler lid opening tool to open all my jars so I don't damage them. I use some tattlers, but regular lids I reuse all the time, but I always use new one when doing meat or other more expensive items. I also use lid from Dollar Tree, and they have worked out great. None of the buckling stuff like the Pur or Mainstays one. I have just finished my first case of 240 of the dollar tree lids and I don't think I have had a single failure with them.

Be careful using the hook on a regular can opener. I have chipped my jar by getting the hook over the treads instead of just on the lid. I grew up with the warning not to reuse canning lids. It never occurred to me to challenge that admonition. That is until the lid shortages of 2020. After watching several KZbinrs who reuse lids, I gained the confidence to try it for myself. I buy all my mason jars second-hand. They often come with lids. I think some of the jars I buy were used for crafts and the lids have never been canned. Others are bent or stained. There is also a great range of condition between those extremes. This past season I used 2nd hand lids exclusively. I did have a couple of failed seals. I did find some jars on the shelf that had lost their seal & had to be discarded. I just checked my production journal, 2% of my reused lids failed. Canning lids in my area are $3-4/dz. when I can find them. Yes, some of my time and food was wasted but in the big picture I think the value of the lost food is less than the money I saved by reusing lids. I inspect the lids very careful, looking for compressed gaskets, staining, misshaped or corroded lids. Thos all go in the garbage.

I save all of my used lids and use them to vacuum seal. About 2 years ago I saw Sara on Living Homestead use a Pry-A-Lid and I ordered one from Amazon for around $25. Last year I decided to buy a duplicate "just in case " as a Christmas present to myself. It was $40!!! But, I got it because I know that they will either run out or continue to increase in price. Excellent video and all those are great tools to use, I just use a spoon and go towards the smallest gap on the thread of the jar closest to the lid and gently pry it open and it does so without damaging the lid. By the way I never reuse my lids, only for dry canning and vacuum sealing and storage. Like you said we put so much time money and effort into pressure canning expensive food for long-term use and survival it just doesn’t pay to take a chance with an old lid in my opinion. I personally stocked up on lids a few years ago before the bug hit so I guess I’m good for a while. Thank you for this video

Our Walmart has restocked and had quite a few flats of both sizes of lids, yesterday, along with a bonanza of jars. I bought a flat of 24 boxes of each. I'll label those with 2/2/22. Seems the key tip is to not damage/dent/bend the rim when opening and to treat it like glass. I've also seen some canners experimenting with reusing metal lids with a tattler rubber gasket for water-bath and pressure canning. I'm waiting to see some sort of consensus on that idea.

Yes, I re-use lids for dry food storage. I don't want to risk losing a pint of meat that cost me $5-$6 to save $.25. (Regular lid price at Walmart yesterday $2.97/doz.) Even worse to lose a quart! As long as I can get lids, I don't take the risk for expensive foods. If the need arises in the future, I will re-use lids for relatively inexpensive things like extra broth and similar items that can't be preserved in another way. If there's no other choice, I'll do what I have to do. That said, I save all my undamaged lids. Also save jars with what I call pop top lids, like those on jelly jars. (Those can be re-sealed using a FoodSaver canister, too. ) I dehydrate a lot of foods and store dried foods, such as beans, rice, pasta, cornmeal, grits, etc. in glass jars. Most I vacuum seal and undamaged lids work fine. If a lid fails, just grab another one to vac seal grits. I keep rings on vac sealed jars. If the seal fails, the food inside doesn't spoil and does a jar of sweet peas. The only thing happens is the long term shelf life may be shortened. I also save the lids for another purpose. For dry jarred foods that I don't vac seal, I put a used lid inside the wide plastic storage lids sold to fit mason jars. The white ones don't have a gasket. (Expensive black ones, do.) When I put a canning lid inside the plastic lid, that gives it the equivalent of a gasket. Often, the metal lid will remain inside the plastic lid, when they are removed from the jar. Good to know about the other lid remover options. Sometimes using a butter knife or spoon works, but I seem to be losing some of the grip it takes for that. I've switched to using a church key type beer bottle opener. It has a rounded edge where it applies top pressure to the lid. Doesn't seem to bend them as badly as some other types of bottle openers. I'll also be checking on the one from Bed, Bath... FWIW...... It's easy to keep used lids, separate, in a drawer that I have labeled FoodSaver. Put them in a little basket beside the jar sealer attachments. BTW, Iso Alcohol 70% quickly removes permanent marker labels from those lids. Next use, clean lid ready for labeling. Tip: If you have a FoodSaver, search Ebay for Tilia FoodSaver canisters to seal jars. If memory serves Tilia is the parent company of FoodSaver. The largest smoke color Tilia canister will seal a 1/2 gallon mason jar. To make it easier on the vacuum pump, use the smallest canister that will hold the jar because there's less air to remove from the canister. I was fortunate, a few years ago, to acquire a good collection of various sizes and styles of these canisters from an estate. From the smallest to the largest, all have proved to be useful in my pantry. Including re-sealing mason jars lids. I still keep an eye out for them at yard sales & flea markets. Thank you for sharing and teaching. Looking forward to more in this series, as I know there's still much for me to learn in mastering the art of food storage.

Put the jar of dry food that will be sealed inside the canister. The ring on the lid should be just tight enough to hold the lid on the jar. There must be room enough for the vacuum pump to pull the air out of the jar. Put the lid on the FoodSaver canister and attach the vacuum sealing hose to the canister and the FoodSaver. Lock the FoodSaver and use the buttons according to your manual. When it finishes pulling the vacuum, remove the hose from the canister. Remove the sealed jar from it. Hope this helps.

I reuse water canned lids. The rim is not damaged as compared to pressure canning. I do not reuse lids from canning meat. To open them without damage I put butter knife flat on top of the lid and use bottle opener, which I press into the knife. The lid is not damaged at all. Bottle opener is 0.99 cents at Walmart.

I have one of the pry a lid tools, but i only paid $9 for mine. Where did you get the vaccum canister? I have never seen one before. I have wondered why there wasn't one.

Got a pry a lid last year for around $10. Reuse lids for dehydrated goods only. What is the canister you are using to reseal the jars?

good rule of thumb You can reuse the lids if you're using it to store stuff that doesn't have to be sterile and is shelf stable. otherwise use a new lid that sealing compound is a one-shot deal Believe me I know. Yes they can reseal if you're lucky however it's really a crap shoot You don't want to spend hours and hours making preserves and preserved food only to find out half of it didn't seal properly and that food is going to spoil or has spoiled.

What is the brand of the container for vacuum sealing?
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 2 жыл бұрын
It's a FoodSaver canister. They aren't sold new anymore. You can still find them on line. Older and larger ones, by the same company are branded Tilia. The largest of them will hold a 1/2 gal mason jar. Best to use the smallest canister that will hold the jar being sealed. Saves wear and tear on the vacuum pump. Hope this helps.

I know this is out of the context of your video, but HELP! I prepared ground beef last night to can. It was already cooked but it got too late and I refrigerated it. As soon as I got up, I slowly heated them in the oven. Meanwhile I forgot it was in there and turned oven up to 350. It was in there for a good hour or more. I pulled the jars out and they sealed. Are they safe?

The secret to not damaging your jar lids when removing them is to GENTLY go around the whole lid and barely lifting each area until you hear a hiss of air. Most people will just pry hard one time and remove lid which destroys the lid. I reuse lids for storing dehydrated foodstuff in jars. I will pressure can with a used metal lid IF there are no indentations AND IF THE LID was originally made in the USA! Modern lids are made overseas and the sealing compound is thin and skimpy. Older lids have thick sealing compounds on them. BEWARE! Original Tattler lids (white only) can be reused over and over and over when pressure canning! Saves money in long run. I will use new metals lids only once for LONG TERM STORAGE and Tattler lids for short term storage(less than 18 months) so I can use them again. WORKS FOR ME! 🙂
