New information on Pur jars and lids, how to know if a Weck jar is sealed and how do you open them, and a very cool canning lid hack--all found in this video!
Note: Tattler is contacting Facebook canning groups and spreading the word not to use their gaskets on metal lids because it might produce a false seal. Here is my opinion: There is no message that they have tested this use and found it to be unsafe. It is a liability issue for them. I get that. I have canned about 30 quarts of various foods using this method and plan to leave them in our food storage for a year. We will see what the actual data say, and I will report it at that time.
12/20/2023 Update--it has been over 2 years since I used this hack on 30 pints of veggies and the remaining jars are still sealed perfectly.

@@RoseRedHomestead I just don't see a problem with this wonderful hack! the vacuums is keeping the lid down tight and the cushion form the gaskets are plugging the edge so what is the problem? I swear the world has gone mad. I LOVE YOUR SHOW !! You are PRECIOUS!!!! and You are a wealth of valuable knowledge. Also. When opening the lid, put a table knife across top of lid, and then use the can opener, that makes contact with the knife instead of the top of the lid that will prevent damage to the top of the lid.

Pam and Jim thank you so very much for all you do in getting this information to us. Today’s info is a total game changer. What I would recommend to new users of the Tattler rubber ring is to use a magic marker and just put a line on each ring as they use it to keep track of how many times it has been used in canning. I understand that they are supposed to be good for up to 10 times each. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

For those having difficulty holding the gasket tab, try vice grips with a little tape over the ribs is deep. This is a hack many of us with spinal cord injury ties to cope with uncooperative hands. An oil filter wrench to hold jars helps too.

I think you covered the science behind the vacuum seal very well. Brings to mind my 8th grade science class with the Bunsen burner, the milk jar (the one milk used to come in) and the boiled egg, at each of our stations. Every time someone talks about a vacuum and canning, I see that experiment all over again. I never get tired of it. I was so much fun.

Fantastic information!!! I had wondered if you could do that and you answered my question! I purchased lids and gaskets from Harvest Guard just in case I couldn't get more Ball lids. I have tried them and they worked, but I do prefer the Ball lids. I also save my Ball flat lids because I use canning jars for storing dehydrated items and other things and use my old flats. This is definitely something I will try!! Again, great information. Thanks so much!!!

This video is spot on and I love your scientific way of showing and explaining this. It is refreshing to see real science in action. I just bought Tattler and can't wait to use them but have had issues with the plastic gasket combo in waterbath. They will seal then come unsealed or not seal at all. My rate of succeses is not great. It may be my error I don't know but until I get it figured out, this is a great option to get my food processed before it spoils. Recanning is expensive and painful. Thank you and keep up the good work!

1st, thank you for all your testing so that we that can't don't have to guess. My mother changed for years but never taught me. Now at 67 I'm learning how and am so grateful for all your knowledge that you so graciously share. Anyu, my husband recently visited his last place of employment that stamp out metal parts for various companies. They are currently running behind on production due to metal being hard to get. Most all their metal orders are months out for delivery so the canning companies are probably in the same hole. I don't think that will change anytime soon. I have purchased the Harvest Guard lids and gaskets. My second purchase took a few months to receive because another youtuber posted a review about them. I did can a few items about six months ago with them and they are still sealed. I think some people's fails with them is in putting the lids on incorrectly. Keep going and smile more especially when you spots bot spores floating by, lol.

I wanted to add to the info of the Weck seal of the gasket. It is said that the “tongue” that you pulled to open the seal, this tab will hang down when it has a proper seal also. I use Weck, and you will see a definite difference in this tab/tongue when there is a proper seal on the jar and not.

Awesome tip, thank you. Maybe as a back burner video idea, I'd love to learn more about what the sealing compound is in the flat lids and how it works. I thought of it as sort of a heat activated glue and now I'm realizing I was making an assumption. I don't really understand why it only lasts one use, I just trust the resources that say so. How cool is that! I am sorry that Tattler and others are giving you a hard time about trying the hack that Sandy and Laurie asked you to try! Of course people need to use common sense and Tattler doesn’t think we are capable. I imagine a company which has seen the dumb things people do when canning doesn’t want any liability. Use this common sense, logical hack at your own risk.

You are correct about Ace Hardware.. my experience with Pur rings/lids wasn't quite the same. I used them to can tomatoes, had 1 quart and 6 pints. I didn't know about your wonderful spoon trick to check sealing and the flats I had didn't have the bubble like the ball lids do. All my jars appeared to have sealed but one (it leaked). Two days after the initial 24 hours, I checked them again and 3 of the pints had black mold starting to form. I'm left with one quart and 2 pints of tomatoes. When I opened the ruined jars, the rubber lining had place that were bare metal, I don't know if it happened during the cooking process or what, but it's an alternative that I will still use, but will double check my flats very carefully. The jars that are left appear to be fine. One thing that made it difficult was that the rings on the Pur flats that are normally red were the same color as the center of the lids. I'm glad to hear you say they are good, I wanted to use all of them I bought on sale. The rings work fine.

I tried the pur lids. I found them to be thinner metal than Kerr or ball lids. And I always heat up my jar lids. I know they say not to anymore. But I have been canning for 43 years now. And I hardly ever have a failure. So I heated up the pur lids. All sealed great. But I did find I can tighten the rings on them as much as ball and Kerr can take, as they are heavier metal than the pur lids. I did have one of the pur lids buckle in 2 places. I'm using wide mouth pur lids. But even though it buckled. It still sealed. But I opened it and used it up. Didn't totally trust that one. But will use them as I haven't been able to find any wide mouths till I found these pur lids.

Hi! I’m a canner from Texas and watch your channel. I wanted to share my hack for opening canning jars to keep lids almost pristine! I lay a butter knife across the top of jar, the place can opener on life instead of the flat. I was amazed! Also when reusing with vacuum sealer I dip in very hot water, then seal. It seals nearly every time. Nancilynn in Austin.

This is a rebel canning hack I have been using for past couple of years. I am not completely confident in Tattlers staying sealed. Between those that don't seal, and the ones that come loose 9 months down the road, they are now only a back up method for me. But using just the seals is invaluable. I have not had any unseal, in using this hack, for several years. 👍

Wow I am so happy you showed this. I have so many used balls lids and living in Australia just to purchase 12 wide mouth tattle lids will set me back $65 plus $27 postage for 1 packet. So you guess it, Its way to expensive. The cost is double for 12 jars with lids lol Now you showed me this I will search on ebay to see if I can find some seals thank you so much for the info just maybe I can save my balls jars instead of putting them in the rubbish. :)

You tickle me when you share surprises...your smile kicks up a few kilowatts! :) Thanks for helping us all and being such a solid fount of information. I don't know if you feel comfortable sharing your source of 33 cent tattler gaskets. I've been debating whether to get them or not. Obviously the ones you purchased are a good buy. Thanks. Jesus bless.

This is great. Lid manufacturer have been selling some pretty crappie lids lately. They have very little rubber sealant on them and only claim to be good for 18 months. I have Tatyler and Harvest Guard lids, which I've never had a fail yet, but I do something other don't. When I put any lid on the jar, including Tattler, I soak in hot water, put on jars and tighten and loosen 3 times, then finger tight metal lids, Tattles same thing, but tighten, tight, then back off about an 1/8 of a turn. Have not had one fail since I started doing this.
