Thank you so much for this video haha. As a Daikin Applied Service/ Start up tech you wouldn't believe how many jobs i go to and NOTHING is ready. Im not sure how the office is in your area, but ours in Atlanta has us bend over backwards for contractors to just "get the thing running"... super frustrating when you actually take pride in your work and want it done the right way.

I hope the chiller manufacturers back charge contractors who, have filled out the pre start up sheet, and schedule a start up, when in actuality the machine is not ready.

We need more contractors like yourself in NYC. 9/10 times they are never ready for a startup. Ive walked onto sites where the piping is incomplete to theres no power ran to the chiller, yet they’re calling for a factory startup. I appreciate your videos !

Good advice on the start up. 2.31ft of head= 1 psi. I'd enjoy being on a chiller install

There is also water treatment that should be set up, for both the chill water, and the cooling tower. The tower has to be started up, and verified. The flow needs to be verified through the condenser barrel. The oil heaters for the chiller need to be on. The manufacturer will have a pre start up sheet, listing all aspects that need to be completed before startup is scheduled. Great video.

Love the video and can totally relate. I am a consultant engineer (commissioning engineer to be specific) so I often work with guys like you to get these systems working as intended. I cannot stress enough the importance of getting a startup report completed prior to our functional testing. We usually require the startup reports in our hands prior to scheduling commissioning. Too many times we go out told things are ready and it turns out major components are missing both on the equipment and BAS end. Its a waste of time that leads to Additional Service Requests and angry building owners asking why their systems are behind schedule and why they are receiving a mile long deficiency list. I am having to deal with this on two hospital jobs with one system serving Operating Rooms and the other Vivariums.

As a factory tech that does start ups on chillers I agree with a lot of this information. I’ve had to walk off way too many jobs because the chiller was not really for start up. And yes we need all that time to go through the chiller and make sure it’s working properly and start the warranty.

Your right on with leak checking the chillers before doing a install and doing all that work. It has been a few times were the tubes have been eddy current before install and they were bulged and the factory still let it leave but we caught it before hand
@MMatte75
@MMatte75 7 ай бұрын
Would also highly recommend doing a baseline Eddy Current to Cond/Evap barrels before a drop of water goes threw the machine have seen plenty of messed up tube rifling and it’s the only way to prove to the manufacturer that it’s not your fault.

I was always told you shouldn't be setting flow with a butterfly valve. I agree with it but I know it works and have had to do it myself before. It is not ideal though.

100% agree with you on every point. I can do my own start up commission with my larger VRF LG multi V installations.. $1850 commissioning fee for one day. Because it looks more professional.. I get extended warranty on the customers equipment. And my son and myself always ask new questions for the latest and greatest and newest updates and software of the commission in technician.. We have never had to pay for a second visit because everyone of our systems from my son’s very first installation have fired up and worked flawlessly with no codes and no returns . Laney College in Oakland California has an excellent residential and commercial refrigeration program . With instructors who actually working to trade or own businesses themselves.. my son, and I were very fortunate one of the instructors actually owns and work for a large commercial industrial commissioning company. And literally a whole semester was devoted to commissioning procedures. Stuff you don’t wanna learn by mistake on the job . There is absolutely no excuse for mistakes or oversights.. being lazy or cheap or taking shortcuts are intentional traits of the individuals performing a task. And they either need to be corrected or the individual needs to be eliminated from the company. unfortunately, sometimes this is the owner of the business itself who needs to be eliminated.. lmao 🤣

10:38 Maybe Im missing something but is it common to use a butterfly valve for balancing? Ive only ever seen them used her for isolation purposes

It is here. Officially it should be a flow setter but those rarely get used.

@@HVACTIME How do you prevent someone tampering with the flow? I wouldn’t think a butterfly valve would have fine enough adjustment to act as a balancing valve. Never seen one used for that.
@HVACTIME

People tamper with flow all the time. It does work for balancing, while a bit crude in how.
@nottangible4098
@nottangible4098 Жыл бұрын
@@gmguy156very interesting indeed! Balancing is typically done with triple-duty valves, venturi tubes, and orifice plates. Butterfly valves or Wafer butterfly valves, on the other hand, are used throughout for iso purposes. Then again, jurisdictions supersede!

A butterfly valve is not the correct type of valve to balance! It may help temporarily but there should be a globe valve for that matter

It’s like using a ball valve for hydronic flow control
@nottangible4098
@nottangible4098 Жыл бұрын
I agree to disagree! A common practice is to use a globe valve for flow control, yes! However, balancing flow is typically done with triple-duty valves [multi-purpose valve], venturi tubes, and orifice plates. Then, on the other hand, Butterfly valves, Wafer butterfly valves, and stem and yoke valves are used for iso purposes. Then again, jurisdictions supersede code!
