Barristan is right in that most medieval and Renaissance-era battles had low casualties, where most armies chose to retreat rather than suffer great losses. Still possible for anyone to be in that low percentage of dead, though, especially if they were in the front lines.

Selmy's greatest strength was never as a field commander. It was as an infiltrator. Look at what he did to rescue Aerys II. Look at his entire escape passage from King's Landing (it's almost like a Pink Panther sketch), or even at his time as Arstan. There's also the SEWERS. Selmy at his finest is a madcap infiltrator. I think his army will be obliterated, and he'll make a comeback triumph against the Yunkish through the most comedic and badass way possible, mostly solo.

Also, given the context and Martin's anti-war beliefs, the mind immediate goes to the "Lambs, wolves, and sheepdogs" speech from American Sniper, itself a crassly classy rephrasing of the "Pussies, dicks, and assholes" speech from Team America, World Police. That being said, with how infamous his writing speed is, I suspect those films came out long after he wrote this chapter, so it's probably just drawing on similar roots.

Feel like Barristan could have at least said (thought) "He wheeled *the Queen's* silver mare about", at the beginning of his great speech. It *is* a great bloody speech, though 📯 And the Great Shepard could be *both* what Mirri Maz Dhur said *and* what the Red Lamb said. A God does not have to have one straight-up job description, title or facet, particularly in *this* saga. The GS is most likely both of these things (which essentially come down to being the same thing anyway - a guardian of a flock, the flock being the Lhazarene and all others). And Barristan and Victarion come from different cultures. One center their lives around reaving, raping and pillaging, and believes that, even though death may come (I would go further and say that they know and expect that death is *likely* to come, what with all the reaving, raping and pillaging), "what is dead may never die, but rises, harder and stronger". The *other* culture, though still being a medieval one, is a *lot* less like the former. The Hightower at Oldtown likely *is* utilised as a beacon/defensive structure. It sits atop *Battle Isle* afterall. It's still difficult to imagine the pyramid and the Hightower being so bloody tall, though! We've been able to familiarise ourselves with the sheer height of the Wall through the show, as we see it from a distance, we see it up close, and we even see it being climbed. Although we were somewhat given glimpses of the Great Pyramid, it was never really from afar, and didn't feel like an 800ft building. We see the Hightower from afar from Sam and Gilly's view when they're outside Oldtown, but it still doesn't seem as tall as 800ft. Something of similar height in our world would be the Eiffel Tower, at 984ft. Still hard to imagine these Planetosi structures 🤔

Both Victarion and Barristan thinking this battle would be glorious in any way is stating a plan, which means it likely won't happen. I always thought Barristan fighting in this battle would be epic, a legendary warrior kicking ass, even though I feel like he will probably die. But after this, I think it's all a misdirection. We are looking forward to a glorious battle because our two primary perspectives say so and stories usually have those kinds of battles, but this is not GRRM's way. So, now I'm thinking it will be actively the shittiest battle out of the four big ones of TWOW. With the likelihood of the confusing horn signals (with Barristan and Victarion both having plans involving horns) and the rest of the stuff you have gone over, it seems like it will be an utter shitshow of errors. On top of that, it would be interesting for Barristan's speech to end up being more true than we think, in the battle we could see Barristan dropping his sword after a hit, or slipping in mud, or shitting himself, or taking a blow that is just nasty and he can no longer fight or even retreat because it hurts so much. I picture the winged helmet even being a poor choice as, like the criticism of pop culture depictions of Vikings often say, having horns (or in this case wings) only make it easier for your enemies to grab you, so I could see him being dragged to the ground, perhaps even thinking he killed someone, only for them to grab him, pull him down, shank him, and then get up and walk off to keep fighting, giving a stranger the more Hollywood-esque part in that particular fight. All that honour and all that strength and all that skill goes out the door as is the case with most soldiers, his inner monologue turning to physical agony and anger as his inability to fight as he witnesses all his plans fall apart, not even being able to kill a single enemy (so the exact opposite of his prayer, another stated plan), and his last words simply being a swear word. Dying as most warriors do, covered in shit and blood and in great pain, and this depiction would contrast this chapter's hype, once again showing just how absolutely awful warfare is and how unlikely you are to be glorious in any way. However, I do think that, even with these plans falling apart, it will still end with a victory, just not in the first phase of the battle. It may take days or even weeks of outright battle, but I think the Volantis Fleet will see a slave uprising, the Lazharene will get involved, the Dothraki and Dany and Drogon may come if the timelines match up, and in the aftermath she still wins, just losing the initial phases of the battle.

I just want the show to end soon so GRRM can finally release WoW. According to rumors I started, he finished WoW three years ago but has a deal with HBO to not release it until the show is over. That makes a lot more sense than what we've been told.

Even if he is obligated to do so by HBO I would imagine he could easily get the last laugh by taking his books in an entirely different direction than the show. People would see the show end as Dany and Jon defeating the evil ice zombies and then ruling westeros happily ever after. Then everyone would think the books have been spoiled for them only to find out some far more sinister and original plot after they start turning the pages.
