I'm fully on board with the lemon tree hypothesis, but I would say the fact that they're possibly importing apples is not good evidence of this. It's just as likely that in such a thriving port city, demand far outweighs supply and apples are one fruit that it is feasible to import. Alternatively, these could be the result of a ship selling off an excess of its supplies on arrival.

Concerning the skin tones of Summer Islanders: maybe there is some range between the different islands (in the sense of 'not all Africans look the same') and they are not as ethnically homogeneous as they might appear to outsiders. Also in real life (white) people tend to describe black skinned people relative differently depending on their exposure to different ethnicities and occasionally different levels of racism.
@shendogg14 жыл бұрын
I was thinking exactly all of this
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin4 жыл бұрын
Sure, people vary - it's just that Victarion is the most well-traveled of our characters and he makes the comment about Summer Islanders generally. "His skin was black. Not the nut brown of the Summer Islanders on their swan ships, nor the red-brown of the Dothraki horselords, nor the charcoal-and-earth color of the dusky woman's skin, but black." Then Cersei, Sam, Tyrion and Daenerys use terms like "jet," "ink" and "black as midnight" to describe four different Summer Islanders. There's a huge difference between brown and jet black. I think GRRM simply screwed up.
@ktoth294 жыл бұрын
In the real world women of all races are generally lighter toned than their male counterparts because they need more UV to make vitamin D for producing Milk. Its why men tend to be attracted to lighter skinned women...I'm not sure how thats relevant here; if there is a gender bias in whether characters are described as nut brown or jet black, but it might explain the inconsistency.
@JessHart0064 жыл бұрын
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin I think you're missing the obvious point that characters speak and think according to their experience and POV throughout the books, and this is done very carefully and purposefully. Events are described differently among POV characters who were all present based on their biases and agendas. The fact is, Xalabhar Jho is probably the darkest person most of those characters have ever seen, and would thusly be considered at that extreme. Victarion, more worldly and traveled, knows further variation. Most notably, none of those other characters have been to the Summer Isles, while Victarion presumably has.

I also think this is the case, but unless two characters describe the same person as different tons of black there is no way to know if it is racism or an author error

Preston, how likely do you think is the possibility that GRRM plants all these similarities and allusions (like a dyer in the theater right before Arya meets her friend's killer) just as a reminder for readers? As a hint to make the readers go "Ah, that guy on Arya's death list killed someone who also had colored hands! Now I remember!". After all, the gap between the books being published is so big, that some sort of "Previously on the show.." is in order.

That's an interesting idea, though I do wonder if a typical reader would see a dyed-hand character and remember 4 books back. It was only on my third read of the chapter or so that it occurred to me. Of course, certainly if a reader is expected to remember Lommy, Arya would.

I'm in total agreement the faceless men probably orchestrated Arya's murder of Raff, but isn't it quite overkill for them to send dozens of their agents to this aim? If they want him dead (in order to mess up relations with Westeros), I'm sure there are easier ways for them to achieve that. Or is it that they don't care about the Westerosi envoy, and it's all just a game to manipulate Arya? As in "You murdered a member of the Westerosi envoy! We are very angry! Summer Islanders have mixed ethnicity. The Isle of Women was colonized by Nymeria, therefore making them half-Rhoynish. I imagine that there is a similar theme across the Isles. That could explain the differences in skin color.
@alexandertsamourlidis6464 жыл бұрын
Hey here's a fun thought. GRRM knows exactly what he is doing with the descriptions of the summer islanders. The people who describe them are more or less "racist" based on how many people of colour they have actually seen. So a Braavosi that is accustomed to meet a lot of Summer Islanders and Basilisk Islanders would have a better colour definition between the two, whilst Westerosi might describe any Summer Islander, as pitch black as their cultures are so predominently white. Like Greeks meeting Ethiopians. So Ethiopians are some of the lighter coloured African people right, but when the Greeks first meet the Ethiopians, they considered them too dark skinned, and called them Burned faced. By the way Ethiopia is a Greek word and it literally translates to Burned face.....

More like the 'bravi', 'gorillas', than condottieri who were merc soldiers. Sure some bravi were former soldiers or aspiring to be so, but their status and role was completely different. They were the private enforcers and bodyguards of nobles and wealthy, not soldiers. The equivalent of the condottieri are chars like Plumm, Naharis or the tattered prince who hire out (with a 'condotta', 'contratto') the company. But the individual merc didn't work for the client, like in the case of the 'bravi', the individual merc worked and owed his allegiance to the company.

In the last Arya chapter in Dance it is specifically stated that Arya will receive a new one, just as pretty as her original face, this is something you repeated yourself in earlier PFW video on this chapter. Also, if summers can last over ten years, I don't think anyone will wait till fall to harvest their apples, but instead to whenever they become ripe. Two thoughts: didn't Arya get a new face for Mercy? After she was the Ugly Little Girl, the Kindly Man said she would get a new face "as pretty as her own" for her theatre job, so those from The Happy Port wouldn't recognise her unless they knew who they needed to look for. You may be leading up to this for your next video, but maybe Arya has been set up and the Faceless Men *want* her to kill Raff (as you said, they know her list, and they know who is accompanying the envoy) to create further tension in the leadup to the election and reduce the chances of Swyft being successful in his negotiations? I feel like Dareon was a setup, in that the FM should know that desertion from the NW is death, so she was really just doing what needed to be done; she was rewarded for that by moving her to the next phase of training (Blind Beth). I wonder if this is a similar scenario, where they are putting her in a position where she thinks she is doing something of her own accord, but is really being guided to it.

Can anyone confirm wether Preston's statement is actually true or not?
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin4 жыл бұрын
The final line of the Ugly Little Girl chapter has the Kindly Man saying that her next face will be "A pretty one this time, I think. As pretty as your own. Who are you, child?" I took that to mean that it was her face. Reading it again, I suppose there is a possibility that its an equally pretty girl.
@theletterm54254 жыл бұрын
That line actually seems kind of mocking by the kindly man. "As pretty as your own" implies that Arya is not "no one", that she has her own face, her own identity. I think Mercy was someone who originally died at the HoBaW . She has a distinct personality (giggly, charming), quite different from Arya which could come from the original Mercy (whoever she was), much like how Arya experienced the memories of the Ugly Little Girl. I don't think Arya is that good of an actor yet that she could believably pretend to be someone so different from herself (Mercy is much more like Sansa than Arya). Arya hasn't actually received any acting lessons yet (her gig in Mercy is her first speaking role IIRC) and she's always had had her own headstrong personality that would be hard to suppress. Great video by the way! I really only watch your ASOIAF related videos so it's been a little while. Made me quite happy to see this pop up in my subscriptions ;)

We don't know if all summer islanders look the same. Take f.x. the idea that most people from Ireland have red hair, they don't, but when a person knows just a single irish with red hair they can make all sorts of assumptions. There may be different emigrations of tribes to the Summer islands, their genetics may be just as varied and complicated as Westeros. And I think GRRM is quite aware of how people generalize and make all sorts of assumptions, take f.x. how Jorah Mormont is called Jorah the Andal by the Dothraki, despite him not even being an andal. Jalabhar Xho is a prince who may be descendent of an invasion from the basilisk isles some hundreds of years ago, who knows, the upper classes of the Summer Islands could have darker skins than the general population, just like I imagine the upper class of Westeros in general may or may not look slightly more Valyrian than the average Joe, or the upper class of medieval England look slightly more norman. All this to say, we never run into a group of Summer islanders in the books, individuals are a poor way of estimating how the population looks like, not to mention how unreliable the POVs. All this to say, GRRM may or may not be consistent. :) But as always, I enjoy your reading series, thank you!

Do you think you assumed her to be a hetro lover or mistress to aegon. But why not dany? We know she goes both ways

@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin I have seen videos talking about how bravvos and dorne are aligned with dany. Due to history I think that is an insane statement. Would the sealord. A leader of a city that was founded by freed and escaped slaves hiding from the dragon. Why would he sign a marriage pact helping the last of the dragons gain power? But maybe the black pearl much like many of the other characters (person tyrion meets with penny) who claim they want to serve dany. But really want her power for something? But honestly if you read this that was a dumb rant. What I really want to know is more about the sea horse house. I can't spell good. Im a big black supporter of the rightful Queen. The bastard brothers posible son or grandson of the lord. Or neither

How many sample chapters are there? I heard like I've seen 3-5% of the book here.
