Hey Preston, I've always wondered about the parallels between tyrion and the stranger. In his adventures in Andalos he's obsessed with death, and his crew parallel a warped seven. A disgraced blacksmith, a craven warrior, a homosexual father and a maid with stretch marks. Tyrion seems to think of himself as a walking deadman and bringer of death. And a "half man", like the stranger. I know a parallel isn't a connection, but what does it all mean?

I really hope Penny does turn out to be either a spy, a secret assassin or... *something* other than who she currently appears to be. She took up quite a bit of Tyrion's ADWD storyline without any real payoff. She fails as a love interest for Tyrion with him feeling mostly pity towards her. Besides that she just kind of slows Tyrion down and gets in his way. Not sure what exactly George has planned for this character, but I hope it does turn out to be something at least semi-interesting after all the meandering in Dance.

Eddie F Very true. While most plots kind of end on cliffhangers in Dance due to the battles of Ice and Fire being removed, no individual storyline ends as abruptly as Tyrion’s. @theeagleofbavaria4 жыл бұрын
Well, I think she is just who she’s said to be. I don’t really see the point of making her a spy... We like to go into tinfoil theories for AFFC and ADWD, but we just have to accept that most their narration kinda goes nowhere... Those books are just a WAY too much elaborated fashion to settle the stage for TWOW and on longer term for ADOS.
@theletterm54254 жыл бұрын
Cry of Soul Well you might be right that she is just who she says she is. But there are some good points in favor of there being more to her. One thing that really intrigues me is when Penny talks about performing for the Sealord of Braavos. She says he gave her and her brother a "grand gift". It's obviously left secret what this gift is so we can only speculate, but some think it might have something to do with the Faceless Men.

@prestonjacobs "The Night's Watch" series is my favorite. Especially "The Secrets of Craster's Keep". Because of this I've read the story of the Night's King over and over. The more I read it it seems more like a warning against the children of the forest. The Night's watch's minds being taken over. The horn of Joramun possibly being used to wake them. And when this compares to your pink letter mystery it seems like the horn waking the children in the cave with Bran would wake any "singers" influencing the minds of men. The tale of the Night's King also seems like a tale of a Usurper. With the Starks being in your words "foreign invaders," It seems the "Winter Kings" take over of the North was part of a deal struck which resulted in the building of the wall and the Night Fort. With Defeated enemies becoming wildlings. While the wives and daughters were taken by the Starks for breeding. The Lord's right to the first night would be seen as an offering to the children of the forest (maintaining first men tradition) but in reality it's to encourage the people of the north to send possible telepathic babies to a designated location to be picked up by the others. So with that said, is it possible that "The Long Night" occurred because the Starks started having telepathic bastards they were trying to keep for themselves? Were the bodies of dead Stark kings placed in tombs to keep the secrets safe from the children of the forest? Could such a secret destroy the agreement made between the Starks and the others? Did the arrival of the first men interrupt the war between the children of the forest and the Others? The children of the forest weapons consisted of dragon glass. Too weak for the First men's but good enough to fight wights and white walkers.

Interesting point to raise about courtesans...in some ways Braavos reminds me of Venice in Italy. And in Venice, especially around the late middle ages/early renesance, Woman were never allowed to be literate or have opinions of their own. Their job was to marry a good man and have his children to continue family lines and forge alliances. Courtesans were "outside the norm". They were allowed to read, they knew music, poetry and literature. They were allowed to carry on converstions with men on nearly every subject. A famous example is a woman named Veronica Franco who's life is told in the movie, "Dangerous Beauty" (One that I highly recommend)

I don't know that Izembaro actually acknowledged Tommen here. One, it may be intentional mockery, in that Tommen is a "fellow monarch" i.e. not more than a King of Mummers. Second, people still generally call people "King" if that is how the person styles themselves, even if they don't recognize the title. They may call that person "false king" or something to that effect, but they will still say King, because otherwise if would be confusing

This a problem because by the end of AWOW all the main characters have to be back in Westeros for "A Dream of Spring." This is similar to the pacing issue another George, George Lucas, faced in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy with almost nothing happening in both Episodes I & II and most of the burden of setting up Episode IV falling on Episode III.

In some cases you explain actions of individuals as Maegor or Bloodraven, or groups like the Faith by claiming that they know in detail, or at minimum vaguely, about genetics behind dragonlords abilities. But if they know, WHY did House Targaryen made so many moves against its own best interest. Why did one of the Targaryen kings maried Myriah Martell and send Deanerys to Dorne. Why not marry Deanerys? Or why did Bloodraven supported non-dragon-gene branch of Targaryen dynasty in the Blackfyre rebelion? You cannot say that Targaryens AND the Faith knew about those details since days of Aenys I, and then forget it to rememeber it again and know it again

The patriarchy of Westeros being regressive may be GRRM's view, but it is an ignorant, simplistic critique. For example, you explain it as about noble landholdings and removing agency from women, however, it is also for the common folk. Isn't it obvious that promiscuity and broken homes would be bad for society? That is why the GRRM version of freely sexual societies is actually an example of orientalism - a prejudice against Eastern and African societies for their loose morals but prefer them to the restrictive ones of their home societies. It is not true of course. Both Eastern and African societies have strict morals for the same reasons that Western ones do - disease, family structure, and emphasis on stability.

None of the "freely sexual" societies in his books are perfect foils to sexist westeros though. They are all just different shades of sexist and patriachical.
