I just had professional painters paint a small room where the previous owner smoked. We used Bin Zissner Ultra Stain Blocker. It took 2 coats to cover the walls. Then 2 coats of color. Waiting for paint odors to clear before we do the rest of the house. I was going to go with Kilz Original oil based primer. May try that in another room as it gives far more coverage than the Bin Zissner did which had a very thin consistency.

The best primer to use in a smokers house is Zinsser BIN shellac based primer. It completely seals any surface it's applied to stopping odor and stains. It's an acetone base so you should just throw out the brush and roller you use and it's expensive but it is an amazing product.

you had said you need to clean the walls but the ceiling and upper walls were still yellowed. is it you just need to clean them once with TSP let it dry then paint? the way it was presented you have to get the walls back to white as close as possible. my brother was a heavy smoker and we are fixing up the bedroom and the walls are tar and nicotine covered.

In Belgium I use Solarine it's a product containing essential pine oil; it really does wonders and can also, in a concentrated form, be used as a paint stripper. The wall you showed there would be really much cleaner with Solarine (I had an even browner wall I wanted to paint in white and one coat of primer and one final coat was sufficiant). I have no idea if a comparable product exists in te U.S.

I have a garage with just a faint tinge of a smoky smell (from a wood stove). The woodstove was removed by the past owner, but the scent lingers in the garage. Should I still use TSP or is odoban mixed with water and Kilz primer enough to get the job done?

I think a common misconception is it's just nicotine. What I've encountered is layers of cooking grease from fried foods stained with nicotine. It's like wax & it gets into EVERYTHING. Even air conditioner & shower wall. Its much worse than just nicotine.
@chrishouse57534 ай бұрын
It's actually far more tar than nicotine (though there is both). Tar is a very sticky substance produced during tobacco combustion. But I agree, once you get one stick substance on the wall all kids of other things; dust, dirt, pollen, food, grease, sloughed skin.... so the mix of cleaning products can help attack the differently bonded chemicals. E.g., detergents will break down grease and oils, bleach will disinfect, and TSP helps set up chemical and microscopic mechanical bonding for paint.

only one thing works before painting You need to cover your floors first with plastic first and open your windows (the smell will give you headake) Use amoniac in a spray bottle (test the result wipe it down with a paper towel AFTER WAITING for like 10 minutes) You need the product to do it's work before wiping it off...then look at the result on your towel. Next, use bleach, but ...not in a spray, just on a microfebre towel. Wipe down the surface very slowly and with caution. You don't want the bleach to end up on the floor or any unwantend surface. Wait for the bleach to do it's work (10 min will do) Rince with a good soap & water solution (make sure there's no more bleach left on any surface) If completely dry...you are ready to paint

Me and my daughter did this type of cleanup about 2 weeks ago on our rental property. The walls were nasty, especially in the corners. All the corners of the house looked like soot. It looked like smoke from a fire. I have no idea how it got like that. TSP cleaned it up.
@homesteadhideaway3 жыл бұрын

I bought a condo that has nicotine stains on the ceiling. The previous owner tried to hide the stains by painting over them near the edges of the ceiling. So now I have a ceiling with nicotine stains and fresh paint near the edges. Is there a way to remove the cover up paint so that I can clean the nicotine stain under it? I heard that TSP removes the gloss from paint, but will it also remove the nicotine stain under the paint?
@homesteadhideaway2 жыл бұрын
Most likely you will have to try to seal what is there with a oil based paint to try to lock it in and then repaint.

Wonder if we sanded with like a 50 or 60 grit, then wipe walls clean with like say Clorox wipes after drying paint the wall? I'm just cirious if sanding would remove smoke stains?
@homesteadhideaway Жыл бұрын
Nicotine seems to soak into the paint so you would have to do a lot of sanding which may damage the finish.

What if my walls are lightly smoke damaged? Maybe a 1/4 of what you are showing...is the same paint "fire power" necessary? My walls were white and slightly smoke tinged and I am looking to go a medium rich Turquoise color. (Office). The quickest route is best as I am older. I was hoping that with only 1-2 years of smoke damage and going a much darker color that 2 coats of priming could be avoided. Please advise.

Does the nicotine bleed through over time or does the smell come back over time? We are in the process of buying a home that has been smoked in for 50 years and debating whether doing the tsp and painting will take care of it or if we need to rip out the drywall and redo it.

I have removed the paint first with "Anlauger" , just scraped it away. It got rid of the sweet-sour disgusting smell, but I am considering either applying a high quality colour, or removing Plaster from Walls and Ceilings entirely. I would rather try the hard Method, but theres a Possibility that the Nicotine got into Brickwork and the hard Work would be in Vane
