It's taken me 3 days and I'm almost ready to put this fab looking pie in the oven. Day 1 make the pastry, Day 2 make filling, Day 3 Roll out and assemble. I'm very old 85 yrs so I take everything in slow stages. Oh boy, I am looking forward to this. I did think a quarter-inch pastry was a bit thick. Here in the UK, a pie is praised if the pastry is thin but hey let's go the USA way.

I have only made the old fashioned Betty Crocker pie all my life. Your pie was so pretty I gave it a try. I made 2 pies. I never tasted the 1st one cause I’m trying to fit into my wardrobe better. But I assembled the 2nd pie today for our 53rd Anniversary. Today I did have a piece. OMG, the best pie I’ve ever eaten. Never made a lattice crust before either. So very pretty. 🎉🎉🎉 I’d send a picture but I don’t know how. My pie is just as pretty. Thank U Thank U Thank U. I’m 75 & just changed the way I make pie. My only change was I picked green apples off our tree so I didn’t add lemon. Also took me 2days. Let the filling cool in the frig overnight. It was fun. Like working on a piece of artwork. It made me happy.🥰❤️❤️❤️

I made this! My first ever apple pie, I have some tips for people like me who haven't ever made pie before: 1. Make sure the dough is a circle before you refrigerate, I absentmindedly made it a square and it was struggle to roll it out to cover the pan. 2. Don't let it sit out the fridge too long if you're in a warm climate, flour the surface well and roll asap or it will get sticky and crumble. This was very good by the way. Everyone loved the crust, very delicious, I'll always make this crust recipe even for other pies.

I've varied the recipe a bit. For the crust, I use chilled vodka in place of some water to add moisture but not develop gluten. I also used 2/3 butter to 1/3 lard. Finally for the filling, I brown the butter, add 1/4 tsp. Cardamom AND add 1/4 cup Calvados (a French brandy made from apples, not grapes). I hope you try these adaptations to the recipe, because they elevate the pie so much. And for the bake, I preheat the oven with a metal baking sheet so that it brings extra heat to the bottom crust as soon as it hits the oven....never risk a soggy bottom again. Love your videos!!! 😊

First, I need to say thank you for your excellent videos, recipes, sense of humor, camera presence, the whole package. You are a joy, and one of the reasons I still have my sanity this far into 2020. Second, I wanted to ask if you have even heard of this step in fruit and custard pie-baking - after placing your bottom crust into the pie plate, lightly brush it with beaten egg. Wait 10-15 min before adding your filling. The egg wash seals the crust against the moisture in the filling and helps it stay flaky, but it disappears in baking so you don't see any evidence of egg. Wondered if you or anyone else ever tried that? I've been doing it for years and it really works!

I have been looking at this recipe for a while and finally committed to working on the apple filling. Couldn't complete the recipe because we are going on a cruise and not enough time to finish it prior to the cruise. I liked the idea of using a potato peeler to remove the outside. I have been making apple pies for 6 decades and this was a new trick for me. I used an apple corer instead of cutting chunks off the sides. It gave me more apple to work with. I froze the filling and will make the pie when I get back from the cruise.

Hi John. I am Kiranjit from Malaysia South East Asia. I made this Apple Pie with your Pie Crust receipe last sunday. It turned out beautifully and the pie was amazing !!!For the 1st time in my life my apple pie and pie crust turned out so well. My husband was so happy and praised me. Thanks to you! I am a Mum of twins too and both of them helped me. I am looking forward to trying out your Chicken Pot Pie too.

I love to use an apple filling for dessert served in small cups or jars or any other nice looking glass, and is made of two layers. First is home made vanilla custard finished with thin crispy burnt brown sugar (like you do for creme brulee), the second is apple filling, rich in cinnamon, cloves and orange zest, and finally goes nice cloud of whipped cream :)

John, thanks for the beautiful apple pie video! I want to try it with lattice now that you showed how. Your pie looks perfect! I've been using the recipe in the 1950's Betty Crocker Cook Book, except I add butter to the crust and lemon juice to the apples. It's a very good pie crust, but I'd like to try your recipe and techniques. There's nothing like seeing a pie being made instead of just reading it. The hardest part for me is getting the water and flour proportions right (I noticed it takes less water and the dough is softer when the flour is fresher.) I have a hard time rolling out the dough to a circle and it sticks most of the time. So my pies look ugly but taste good! Lol! By the way, I love your personality and how happy you are!!! I love your smile!!!

I made this pie some time ago and ngl it was the best pie crust I've ever made and tasted! I used to make apple pies with different recipes, but this recipe is just *chef's kiss*. Though due to different kind of apple I use, I didn't adjust the right amount of lemon so the filling is a bit too tart cz my local apples are mostly tart :) I need to make sure the level of tartness of my apple before adding the lemon I guess. Also, the below pie crust I made was so soggy maybe cz I wasn't patient to wait the filling cooled down. I guess I need to bake the base crust a bit before adding the filling :) I will make apple pie again today, hope it will success

I'm really enjoying this particular video. I laughed a lot, chuckled, and smiled. I like how you are being informative and at the same time so real like any regular homebaker who'd make a mess and just laugh at it while getting slightly frustrated. A lot of bakers can make videos on apple pie but this one is by far the best and all because of your personality. Thank you for sharing.

I was watching for the pie crust tips. I put my apple slices, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and flour all mixed together straight into the pie crust with no precooking the apples. It always turns out delicious and less work than the precooking filling. I'd have to taste the preppy cook's pie to see if his is better. But his pie looks beautiful and delicious.

I added powdered cardamom to the filling along with the nutmeg & cinnamon. My diners all detected a difference but could not tell what it was. Perfect. When they asked for the recipe, of course I left cardamom out. If on the other hand they say, “Oooh! Is that cardamom?!” that means you’ve overdosed it.

Hey There John- You are Most Definitely THE Baking Extraordinaire! And I, like No Doubt all of your fans/subscribers regard you as The Master when it comes to baking!! But, from a Mom who’s been raising kids for over 30 years now, In my Humble Opinion, I Really wouldn’t consider Peeling Apples as being a Good task for little children- The risk of the apple slipping and them cutting their little fingers, again, in my humble opinion is a Very Real Possibility- Anyways, I just felt the (somewhat) ridiculous need to share that- But, THANK YOU for All you do! Besides my learning So Much from your videos, I also find them Incredibly Relaxing to watch- Ok, I’ve Blabbed Enough! Many Blessings to You, Bryan, your Beautiful Boys, and Of Course your Lovely and Adorable Mom!
