My family has been making these for at least 50 or 60 years, and started making them as Bourbon balls. We now make them with a little bit of everything (anything from bourbon, rum, brandy, etc.) I also add a bit of good quality vanilla to mine (it brings out the chocolate taste a little more) and have made an Alcohol free version using good quality rum extract. They are also kicked up a notch by adding in good quality almond extract. :) Also, the longer you let them stay in a container, the stronger they get. 😋
@icefox945 жыл бұрын
what are the measurements when you make the alcohol free version? is it just rum extract and water? just curious, i've had rum balls before and like the taste, but i'm not the hugest fan of alcohol and i'd like minors to be able to eat my holiday snacks as well as adults.
@bernadineeileen53755 жыл бұрын
@@icefox94 I personally use an entire 2oz bottle of rum extract. I pour it into a 1/3 cup measuring cup, add a teaspoon of vanilla, and fill up the measuring cup the rest of the way with water. I like them Strong. If you want them weaker, fill a 1/3 cup measuring cup with half water and half rum extract. :)

Extracts are made with alcohol, so if you are an alcohol free person (or making these for someone who is) leave out the extracts.

Three days ago, I called my husband into the kitchen to see what was wrong with my food processor because I couldn’t get it to come on. He flipped the lid around, looked at me like he thought I was senile, and left the room. I am beyond glad to see that you did the exact same thing. I showed this to my husband and he said, “Okay, it’s not just you.” Vindicated!

Thank you! I had lost all my mother's old and most favorite recipes.She compiled all of them together on two books - one for my sister,and one for me, and that's been over 25 years ago...She had found (somewhere?) 2 blank special blank books for just this urpose, that had "Family recipes on the front.She spent hours writing them all down for us and mine was lost somewhere along the way in the shuffle of our moving a couple of times ..But she gave it to me again one Christmas as I wanted to make small treats for my husband's coworkers He was a city transit bus driver for 12+ years.I found an assortment of Christmas themed design coffee mugs and decided to make small cellophane wrapped packets of my mother's rum balls for each of them.It was a nice and pretty easy gift idea..I made the rumballs just like you did here,and like you,I got just a tiny bit "heavy handed" with the 151 Bacardi! The irony was that they smelled pretty strong just from the get go,but I really got a laugh when he came home that night after handing them out to everyone...because his supervisor (a great guy btw!) refused to allow any of the drivers to eat them that were going on shift! That's how and when I realized just HOW strong they probably are! But everyone loved them and appreciated the personal gifts!Thanks ,and I had lost my recipe again and you helped me with wanting to make more this Christmas!

These are made in my family for decades. I use graham crackers with or without cinnamon, add some coffee to enhance chocolate flavor, melted dark chocolate ( Lindt or Dove , or any fancy European chocolate) , and roasted hazelnuts instead of pecans. Lots of rum !!! Coconut 🥥 is also great to enhance nut flavor with Malibu rum .

you can also do this with those layered wafer cookies (whatever flavour you like), icing and all, icing sugar, bit of cocoa powder, and hard alcohol of your choice. i don't recommend using liquors as they're too sweet. i just eyeball all the measurements and taste until i'm happy with flavour and texture. raspberry vodka with extra chocolate is really nice. whiskey with a touch of instant coffee. whatever you like
