Presbyopia is a condition that happens when the crystalline lens in the eye becomes less flexible and therefore more difficult to bend.
Far-sighted eyes are more susceptible to this condition and near sighted eyes are often immune (but need glasses to see in the distance)
I have based these examples on an emmetropic eye (no near/far sightedness)

I’m 43, last year my presbyopia started to become apparent very rapidly after recovering from Covid. I wear varifocals now with +1.50 ADD and my eyes are so much more relaxed. After hearing horror stories about how unpleasant it is to use PALs, I was very impressed with mine. They work flawlessly and were very easy to adapt to.

I am the same at 45, I noticed some minor issues at around 42, and it rapidly declined to a set point now and varifocals was what I needed to read clearly. I must say it did spook me somewhat as it came on very quick with noticeable results and I thought I was going blind.

Can you pleaaase do a video on hyperopia? I have so many questions about it... It's such a complicated condition and I feel like you're the only reliable source on this issue as you have it as well.

I did your watch test by taking off my glasses. My watch logo (TIMEX) below the 12 is clear at 8 inches. Wearing my progressives, the watch logo is clear at 12 inches. I just had cataract surgery, and I had my surgeon leave me nearsighted. My old glasses seem to be working fine, and now I can see road signs again. I am age 71.

Hey Antonio, I have always been myopic but I had cataracts early on. I was lucky to have good surgery but the lenses were single vision and didn't correct my Astigmatism. I am still myopic but with at least -2.00 Astigmatism glasses are great. I only have +.2.00 reading add over my -2.50 myopia. Recently I have had success with hybrid contact lenses with EDOF as well.

I'm short-sighted and have to take my glasses OFF to see up close now. I'm 53. My optometrist has told me I'm ready for multifocals but I'm resisting. I don't work, as I'm a stay at home mother so I can comfortably just take my glasses off whenever I need to read. I know multifocals contribute to falls in the elderly and I've been busy strengthening myself with strength training, yoga and cycling BEFORE I get them. I'm working very hard on improving my balance and getting down & up off the floor without the use of my hands.

I'm in my mid-40s and starting to notice this effect, but I've been photophobic my whole life and I've always loved shutting lights off and messing around in spaces much too dark for others to see. It's a strange dissonance for me having to turn lights *on* to see things properly, especially when the reflection of the brighter light off of whatever I'm trying to read is often enough to send me squinting into the corner :)

I'm very curious as to how myopia interactes with presbyopia... I can already see that the watch test puts me at a much younger age comapred to the average, and I've heard of anecdotal evidence from old myopic people saying that they don't struggle as much with looking at close things, but do they actually manage to cancel each other out to some extent?

If you are about 41yo and having myopia -100 then you will have no problem with reading book/gadget if you put your myopia glasses off because in 41yo the presbyopia is on +100 , simply mathematic (-100)+(+100) = 0 (normal)
@MartinNeep
@MartinNeep 8 ай бұрын
Only if you remove your distance correction will it cancel out any lack of accommodation. For example, if your distance correction is -2.00, then without your glasses on you have effectively the same vision as an emmetrope with +2.00 reading glasses on. That’s why you often see older myopes lift up their distance lenses to read.

Interesting... So theres no countermeasures for me to avoid this but to always be in good lighting (○゚ε゚○) Nothing to avoid doing or anything its just a natural thing our bodies go into. Well thats a relief to some extent. No wonder my parents ever since they reached 45? 50? Started to ask me to read the directions of their medications and ask when is its expiry date Well thats awesome. I got schooled and I got n answer Ive been asking all my life. Im 33 now and to be honest Im just thankful for the knowledge youre imparting. Thank you at least now I can explain this to my friends and parents. Its a natural thing. No need to be scared. Every human is going to go through this. You are not alone. Thank you (。’▽’。)♡ I hope you have a great day

Where do cataracts fit into all this? I had both my lenses replaced 3 years ago because of cataracts. Prior I was very myopic (-6 & -6.25). As my work (electronics tech) was easier with this level of myopia I asked the surgeon to fit myopic lenses, but he only put -3s in.

My understanding is that cataract surgery involves placing an artificial lens inside the eye which is solid. Therefore post surgery, the patient will have zero focus accommodation. If your post surgery refraction is -3.00 at distance, then you see the world like somebody with perfect vision would if they wore +3.00 reading glasses all the time.

She did a basuc hearing and sight test aand voila i got glasses and talked. Before this my parents were told ii had an intellectual didability and there was not thing to be done. You didn't explain what eye accommodation is.
@Woodman-Spare-that-tree
@Woodman-Spare-that-tree 8 ай бұрын
“Accommodation” refers to how flexible your eyesight is. It means the range (distance) over which your eye can adjust (accommodate) itself to see. As we get older the lens becomes harder and therefore more inflexible, so the range for which your eyesight can adjust (accommodate) itself does reduce.

Your chart is frankly quite wrong. I am 66 and I can see my fingerprints clearly at 14 cms. I can EASILY see my watch at a much shorter distance. (By the way, a watch is an unhelpful example for 2 reasons: firstly because the numbers on the dial are bigger on some watches than on others and secondly because by bending one’s elbow one can move a watch from arm’s length to a couple of inches away from one’s eyes in a second. So the question “Can you see your watch without glasses?” Is a meaningless question.). At age 66 I can still thread a needle EASILY without glasses. I have been able to thread a needle easily without glasses all my life and I still can. I can still read the tiniest print on menus and packaging without glasses. Of course , I do have presbyopia. I used to be able to pull rose thorns from the garden out of my fingertips at maybe 2 or 3 cms from my eyes and nowadays I do have to hold my fingers further away. The trouble with your very misleading chart is that it is based on the patient having been born with 20:20 vision. I still find it easier to see detail without glasses . I do all my reading on my iPhone and my iPad and in books and newspapers without glasses. What I cannot do is to turn the washing machine on without glasses, or see what is inside the fridge without glasses, or see the edge of a doorway without glasses - and I have the bruises to prove it.

The chart isn’t wrong, it predicts the expected accommodative power of the crystalline lens based on age. Near correction is referred to as ADD (addition) because it’s applied additionally to the distance refraction. For example, if you’re 60 and have a reading addition of +2.50, but your distance correction is -2.50, obviously without your glasses you will be able to see adequately to focus at normal reading distances.
