My journey of learing Present Participles, I used to wonder why they are used this or that way, First time I read little bit online about Present Participles then watch this video, gain little bit insight and feel frustrated since I couldn't understand all the uses, I left studying about it and begin to read novels and observe them with context given in novles after keep wondering about it. I again take a break of sometime and then again come back and watch this video and now I got all the uses. I feel so happy 😊

Thank you for the kind words, Jagadish! Both the sentences are grammatically incorrect. Corrections:- 1. The film has been directed. (Film is a singular countable noun. Hence, there has to be a determiner before it. And it is an object and can't perform an action. That's why the action needs to be in the passive voice.) 2. The film is directed. (The tense and voice are correct. Just needed to use THE before FILM) Hope the explanation helps! 😊

Sir, I have just watched one video he says that verbs are of three types 1.Happening 2.Doing 3.State of being He says The chair has broken is right as "break "is happening verb .According to him 1.The chair has broken. 2.The chair has been broken. 3.The chair is broken. Above three sentences are right because he tells that BREAK is verb which as in 3 types Happening,Doing and stative.He says The chair is broken means someone has broken it so we can say The chair has broken. But according to you,Chair is an object and it can not perform action so The chair has broken is incorrect. Sir I am again confused can you tell me what is this?.Please please then what is the different between Directed and broken .Can both the verbs be in the three types 1.Happening 2 .Doing 3.State of being

Hi! Can we use present and future verbs in main clause when we talking about two action happening at the same time by same man , or does this this structure only use with past tense in main Clause. Sitting on the bed , she reads books( present indefinite) all the day. Sitting on the bed , she read books.( past indefinite) Sitting on the bed , she will read books.( future)
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 2 жыл бұрын
The structure is usually used in the past tense. But I don't see a reason why it can't be used in other tenses. She is watching TV, comfortably lying on the sofa. So, the suggestion would be to move the participle phrase to the end

Hello dear ashish Thank you for your emotional way of teaching, in this episode you put forward an example to better teaching of participle which was, laughing man looks better ... than crying man. If we consider participle as adjective, in this specific example it seems to me more like a gerund rather than participle because we are speaking as a general concept not for describing the condition of man. Laughing man, from my point of view, means the man who is laughing, but here at your example refers to general idea so it seems more to be a gerund. Please guide me.
@EnglishWithAshish

Thank you for the kind words! In that sentence, both laughing abd crying are describing the noun MAN. Ask yourself, what's the subject? Laughing or man! Man is the subject and laughing is modifying it. Hope the explanation helps!

It's a present participle here. Here's the tip: A gerund stands alone; it doesn't have a noun or a pronoun before it. On the contrary, a present participle does. It can come after or before a noun. Examples:- • That's the (waiting) room. • The girl (dancing) in the rain is my sister. Both are present participles. • (Waiting) is not my thing. • She loves (dancing). Here, both are gerunds.

When present participle is used as an adjective, it comes right before or after the noun it modifies. • The (sleeping) man is a beggar. (Coming before the noun MAN and modifying it) • The man (sleeping) on the floor is a beggar. (Coming after the noun MAN and modifying it) When it's used as an action verb, it is followed by an auxillary verb. He is sleeping right now. You are sleeping right now. She has been sleeping right now. Ron might have been sleeping right now. Is, are, has been, might have been = auxillary verbs DON'T GO BY THE LOOKS OF IT! OBSERVE HOW IT'S USED. Hope it helps! 😊

Hello.. I am from Indonesia. I have only one question. There is a sentence in your video " you guys are intresting " My question is how we differentiate the condition when present participle plays a role as a VERB and an Adjective? Because when we put "to be" before present participle, it becomes a VERB right? How if i say "They are running".. ? Running is the verb and "are" is the auxiliary. But why when you say "you guys are interesting" Interesting play a role as an anjective and aotumaticly "are" is no longer the "auxiliary" but now it is a "linking Verb" Correct me if i am wrong.

Hello, Gilbert! It's a great question. Some verbs don't ING forms. INTEREST is one of those verbs. So, when you see these verbs in ING verbs, they more than often work as present participles (adjectives). There is no hard and fast rule to find it out. Hope this helps! :)

It's quite an odd statement to make. We use a participle phrase when the main clause has an action verb in it, and we always keep it close to the noun it modifies. Your sentence misses both of them.
