It's so easy to forget that the basic tenses that a native speaker learns in English first as they grow up learning to speak aren't always as well known or understood to those learning English as a second language. Foundations are so important in language. Tom, do you ever encounter the argument regarding "to be" where some people want to say something like "Two plus three are" and some people want to say "two plus three is"? There were times back in the early 20th century in primary schools in the US where you would hear teachers saying "are" instead of "is" during a class about arithmetic. I think it was even written that way in some very old textbooks of the time. Lovely video!

Thanks so much for this. I’m a native speaker of American English who got her introduction to linguistics by taking French in high school, without which I doubt that I would ever have gotten my B.A. in English at U.C. Berkeley. I would encourage everyone to study a second language or risk not understanding their own💁🏼‍♀️

You are so right. I took a lot of Spanish in High School and at my university in Texas. You learn a huge amount about construction and usage by learning a second language that teachers seem to just gloss over or leave out and assume you understand by default because you speak the language. From editing people's essays and research papers I edited and proofread for people at my university, I know all too well that even native English speakers don't quite get the fundamentals, including spelling. If it weren't for spell check now, some people would have almost indecipherable written language skills.

It was a very nice video, I’d to ask you: Do schools still teach cursive?
@jwb52z9
@jwb52z9 4 жыл бұрын
You would say it more like "Does a school still teach cursive?" or "Do schools still teach cursive?". You don't use the form "do" with a singular subject in cases like this. "School" is one thing in a sentence like this. I know Tom will correct anything I might have missed. It might be that in British English you wouldn't need the "a" before "school" in the first sentence I gave as an example. Learning articles is a difficult part of any language to learn and it can be different in dialects of English as to when you use them and when you don't. I hope this helped and Tom doesn't mind.

What does "intend to do something " mean in English? Does it mean "want to do something " or " already decided to do something "?I intend to arrive after 3.I intend to go to England next week.. could you please explain "intend to do something "?
@arjaygee
@arjaygee 4 жыл бұрын
Intending to do something means that doing that thing is your purpose or your objective. It is somewhat stronger than simply wanting to do something. I can want to become a physician without ever taking any action to achieve that goal. However, *intending* to become a physician implies that I am taking steps or making plans to achieve the goal.
@jwb52z9
@jwb52z9 4 жыл бұрын
If you "intend" to do something, it is your goal or purpose, but it doesn't mean that it will always actually end up happening because something can stop it in most cases. Wanting something doesn't have to include an action.
