They’re amazing people for sure and they keep it REAL LIFE no trying to act like anyone else , they’re just themselves and are natural … when I found their channel they were just doing the house to sell in California and I went on the road trip with them. When they introduced Buggy and the look on Bens face saying he caught his daughter ♥️♥️ Oh my heart as Meg cried happy tears SO DID I. 😄.

I really enjoy your pod cast. I am 85 years old, and this reminds me of how we used to live. Canning in the summer and eating from the garden. Those were the good old days for me. My wife and I raised a garden every year. We raised purple hull peas, tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash and melons. Onions and cucumbers also. We picked black berries and plumbs for cobblers. Apples and pears grew in the yard. We never could get the fig trees to propagate. I tried Aquaponic gardening for a year and I raised some big fish along with okra. I have lost my wife now and I live alone. I have two daughters who come to visit almost daily. One lives with me off and on. Oh, I also watch the show of Al, Ben and sow the seed.

Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Hollars have a sofa and living room chairs in their barn!! Now that’s country living at it’s finest! I had that same “country blue and cream” plaid sofa back in the 1990’s and loved it. Best piece of furniture we ever had. Was made by Bassett in Virginia. Next woodworking project for Ben and the boys is a nice peg board for hanging dried garlic and peppers.

Meg, last canning season I also had several jars break. I solved the issue by having the canner water, my broth or water going into the jars and my jars all close to the same temperature. This year so far no broken jars. Hopefully this helps….. love watching your family learn and grow together, it’s very refreshing 💕

Ball has definitely dropped the ball. I've have taken the whole boxes of at least 2 cases back to Walmart. Yesterday the rings on two jars were crushed. I'm not sure what they are doing differently but I've been greatly disappointed 😕 I like to stock up before canning season. I started buying from the Amish store in hopes that I find better quality jars.

Ben, if you want a quick easy way to move heavier pallets try this. Worked great on my little tractor. I got an old pallet jack, stripped the guts and wheels out of it and welded up a bracket to fit my 3 point hitch. I can pick up way more weight than I can with the front end loader. Obviously you are limited with lifting height.

the sound of that glass jar cracking around the bottom like that brought back a painful memory from 48 years ago! Mom had rendered chicken fat and I was putting it into jars - with a metal spoon in the jar as per mom's instructions. Well, that crack sounded but I couldn't see anything, until I picked up the jar to move it on the counter. Hot liquid chicken fat sprayed out in a geyser, right onto my legs, plastering my pants to me. My sister's boyfriend came up behind me and yanked my pants down to prevent a worse burn! Lucky for me (?) they were maternity pants with an elastic waist, also lucky for me, his quick thinking prevented some terrible scarring. That is still a scary sound to me... but I loved the garlic party in the barn!

I saw Meg's stainless canning jar funnel in a video, and just knew I wouldn't be able to find one locally as all the markets here cater to the city folk. Then, lo and behold, walking through an eclectic out-of-the-way garden center I saw a tiny space devoted to a few canning supplies, and there hung my new stainless steel funnel! Every time I use it I think of Meg's kitchen. Most of my canning jars are old stock from years that I've had them, or handed over from family, and I've only ever broken one like that. I have a few newer ones that are jelly jar size, and I find they chip on the top edges. Of course, when I was growing up we also rarely had a lid not seal either. I'm certain they don't make them like they used to.

I heat my jars in the water bath canner or in a stock pot covered in water. I put the jars in, add warm water from the tap, bring to a boil. Then, I take jars out, empty the water back into the canner, fill my jars & put them back in the canner if water bath canning. If pressure canning put in that canner. Have had very few jars break that way because jars are hot before I add anything hot to them. Hope this helps you!

Meg - every once in a while, maybe twice a year, its great to take multiple turkey and or chicken frameS, as well as beef craps, and make salt free bullion. I make the broth and then reduce until really concentrated. I spray plastic ice trays with PAM and then pour using a 2 cup measuring cup. The salt free bullion is awesome in frozen zip lock bags for a year

That's a great idea for the salt-free bouillon. I was wondering how many ice cube do you use per 2- cups of soup broth or how many ice cubes do you use for say a container of chicken noodle soup? 😊
@biointheknow
@biointheknow Жыл бұрын
@@margiemurray2147 so i do two things. I fill the ice cube tray with water and empty it into my two cup measuring cup twice to determine whats ideal volume for fully filling the two trays. I usually start with like a 2/3 full stock pot and take it down over hours. You want bullion to be highly concentrated and thick to be able to pop a couple into a dish to add flavor

Hearing how you take delivery of feed reminded me of when my cousin and I thought it would be fun to shoot bottle rockets at night in the chicken house. 5000 or so chickens. My only defense is that I was 12.. We took a lickin' and the next time Pop got feed, instead of the hopper truck backing up to the feed shed and filling it up, he had it delivered in 50 pound bags left at the end of his driveway. We spent most of a day hauling and emptying bags. But, honestly, the image of 5000 chickens going crazy with bottle rockets arching through a 200-foot long chicken house is still one of my favorites and I'd be willing to haul the feed again today. Have a Twining-Tying-Tuesday.

Sometimes if my canning jars are only warm, not hot on the outside, I don't start the water warming up under my pressure canner until all the jars are in. The water and the jars warm up together. That has helped reduce cracked bottoms.

Had a visual of Meg in medieval times walking down the village path with the breaded garlic strung over both arms signing 🎶Bring Out Your Vampires 🎶 😂 Great job with the garlic 👍 That is REALLY frustrating about the canning jars 😡

Ball sold out to a large manufacturing company, part of the reason for lid shortage a couple years ago. This company is now making all of the Ball and Kerr products we have relied on over the years. The product quality has gone way down and gotten more expensive. I presently use Forjars canning lids, actually manufactured in the USA and they are preparing the start of manufacturing jars. Keep them in mind when you decide to purchase more. I have had wonderful results with their canning lids, as had many other youtubers that are now using them. A lot of work and sweat goes into canning our garden products and it is rather discouraging when the canning supplies we rely on fail us. My stomach dropped when I heard that crack and then the gush.

I've always braided them the day I harvest, hanging them in braid to cure. Cool seeing other people do different things.

Meg, have had the same trouble with Ball jars with the cracking. So frustrating to go through all that preserving and have a jar crack like that. Well, I weighed my old Ball jars that I have had for literally decades and the new ones that I just got. Guess what? Old jars are heavier. Got to really looking at them and the bottoms and sides of the old jars are also thicker than the new ones. So, I have been lucky enough to have a few friends that are no longer canning and they have gifted me all their old jars. SCORE! Hope you don't have any more trouble this canning season with your jars. For all you canners out there, look for old jars or ask friends and family if they have old canning jars they will sell or gift to you. The older ones are worth their "weight" in gold. :)
