This week Schony747 is at MOTAT in Auckland. MOTAT Volunteer Logan English was kind enough to take me on a guided tour of former Wellington Tram 248 during my last visit to the museum back in December 2022. Logan takes me through some history and features of this Wellington Tram. 28 trams were built from 1933 and the tram proved very popular with the Wellington traveling public until the system closed in 1964. Turn around seats so the traveling public were always facing in the forward position and separate smoking and non smoking areas were two of the features. MOTAT opened in 1967 and the tram was a part of the official opening day.
It's a look back at the way the public used public transport back then. Have a great week - Brenden S.

The reason why Wellington adopted 4ft gauge was due to the narrow streets in Wellington's central business district at the time the Wellington Tram Network started in 1904. The prototype of the 'Fiducia' class trams was 232 built in 1932. It was originally going to be, the 3rd batch of 29 'Double Saloon' trams but the Wellington City Tramways Department of the Wellington City Council, decide to build a larger single saloon tram with folding doors and driver's compartment at each end. The electrical equipment and driver's controllers came from then closed Napier tram system which had 'dead man' braking and equipment that could be used for 1 man operation. Tram 232 was the only 'Fiducia' class had a 'Double Saloon' curved body style unlike the body style of 257. 257 was the last 4 trams that entered service between 1948 and 1952, the last being 260 which is at the Wellington Tramway Museum in Wellington.

@@Schony747 - There is not much mentioned by KZbin channels about NZ's former tram systems especially the unique 4ft gauge system of the Wellington that result in large amount of civil engineering in building of the network in hilly topography of the city resulting in 2 tram tunnels, 3 dedicated tram routes to the hill suburbs of Brooklyn, Wadestown, Kaori and Northland and the building of then semi rural tram routes to the city's eastern suburbs of Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, Miramar and Seatoun.

@@Schony747 during WWII two rows of the double seats and two rows of single seats were removed from the Trams 🚊 so that they could carry more standing passengers I am a retired Wellington Tramway Museum Motorman and I have driven Wellington Fiducia 238 and Wellington MKI Double Saloon 151 and 159 the Double Saloons were the best to drive in the hot 🔥 🥵 summers where you could drive with all the windows 🪟 and doors 🚪 open and the safety barriers down and the Fiducias are good for driving in the winter with all the doors 🚪 closed which kept the cold 🥶 wet out of the Trams 🚊
