President Nixon announced that as of May 1, only 69,000 servicemen remain in Vietnam.

Just finished reading Henry Kissinger's book, "White House Years". It is interesting to watch these videos after following all the behind-the-scenes diplomacy. The US military fought a war restricted to within South Vietnam. While North Vietnam had South Vietnam surrounded with bases and supply lines in Laos and Cambodia. Troops did not capture and hold territory or attack enemy strongholds. Instead they were ordered to walk around in circles as targets with no possibility of winning. In the face of failed Pentagon leadership, the war regressed to a state of personal survival and barbarity.

The U.S. relentlessly bombed NVA supply lines, depots and sanctuaries in Laos from 1965 until mid-1973, and in Cambodia from early 1969 until August 1973. These bombing campaigns failed to stop the NVA from re-supplying their forces in South Vietnam. Tens of thousands of civilians were killed, and the widening of the war - which we should never have involved ourselves in - resulted in millions of deaths, which continues to this very day due to unexploded ordnance, particularly in Laos. Our strategy & tactics, both in the air and on the ground, were never going to result in peace unless we were willing to kill every living thing in the Southeast Asian theatre.
