Actors have a big influence and singers have a huge influence on American culture and the world. So it does make complete sense. Obama gave these recognitions not just to actors and singers but the scientist, doctors and inventors.

Here in the USA we have a whole Day called MLK day and he's part of the history, every kid MUST learn of the legacy of this amazing human being. Nor even a presidente has his own Day, just Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Freedom is maybe a bit "lower" than that, if "lower" is the right terminology. It's for people in general that have done great achievements and have shape the lives of an entire country with their talents and capabilities. At the end all of them are important. In the eyes of Our Creador we are ALL the same. For HIM maybe you or even me could get this Medal, too.

And a few high-ranking government officials. It's almost like a knighthood in some countries.
