Well, I thought my E5's have sounded great for home studio mixing for the last few years, and this test showed that the differences are MINIMAL, not worth ditching any of these if you already own them. For orchestration, jazz, piano, folk, Christian and the other areas I work in, the E5's are the tops IMO. If I were mixing harder rock or EDM, I'd probably want the Rokits I think, but I wouldn't sell my E5s for them, I'd pick them if I were starting new and mixing the hard stuff.

Man, is it my imagination or your recorder is always set at the same height? It seems to me that only the JBL speakers' sweet spots were pointing at the mics. Or maybe it's the angle of the image. IDK, both KRK and PreSonus speakers sounded a bit colored (KRK sounded particularly nasal) or even dull for their reputation and wondering if that could be a factor. Also concerned on the listening environment, seems that they are placed just in front of a wall? Are there any bass traps or anything? Cheers, and thank you for making these videos!

Agreed, these tracks don't show too much of the speakers' abilities, unfortunately. The way a speaker handles piano and violin tells much more.

For listening the JBL sound better.but for monitoring the Presonus are better. glad I got a pair of the E5,s the difference is the crossover freq for the JBL tweeter is lower adding a bright sheen to the upperbass and mids that sound good but is not natural. some may disagree but in the end both are good at the price. and you have to learn the weakness of both to make a neutral mix that sounds good on any system

Moonshine was the best song to hear how KRK RP5 G3 excels. Maybe it colored the sound, but it seemed so pleasant to listen to. The others were not bad, either, but when listening to the KRK RP5 G3 blindly, I almost believed I'm listening to the original recording and not through the speakers.

It's crazy how the sound can change from one setup to another. In exemple, in this video, Amon Amarth sounds so boomy on the Presonus, like there's a lot of comb filtering happening here. Compared to the same song on your other video "Presonus 4.5 VS 5" where the electric guitar shines and the bass is really precise and tight. Keep the good work :)
@DSAUDIOreview
@DSAUDIOreview 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. This setup is more like a typical desktop setup with large surfaces close to speakers that amplified the slight boomines in E5. "E4.5 vs E5" setup was on stands free field with just the acoustic panel behind, hence the less boomy bass. Cheers!

@Brandon Dith-Berry Just because the Jbls are cheaper that doesen't make them not real studio monitors, they're just not as high end as the events. Which by the way, the 20/20 is indeed an excellent monitor. I've never had a problem with my mixes not translating well on my JBL's, infact everything I've mixed on them has sounded great on car speakers, headphones, earphones, computer speakers, Bluetooth speakers, I guess it just depends what works best for you. I'm looking into picking up a pair of Genelecs or Focals in the near future as well, but even then I'll probably still use my JBL's as a second set of monitors.

@@joshsmith7812 I'm not saying price dictates value. I know from the frequency graphs and using them personally that they arent truly flat and wouldn't necessarily be my suggestion to people who want to seriously make music. I'm glad those work well for you. I use Focal Alpha 50 and Event 20/20 as a second pair. The Alpha 50 are insanely good for the price.

Before watching this video, I was set on getting the LSR305's. I was hoping the E5's would sound as good because they're more appealing in their looks and sound adjustment options but.. they don't sound as good ; not to me. I guess I'm still set on the LSR305's

Eris E5 authentically reproduces voice range. For work with human speech (audio books, voice-over, speech, etc.) is the most suitable option. In this case, you can cut everything below 80 Hz, and upper bass to extinguish the adjustments on the rear panel. But high frequencies have E5 I can hear less than RP5G3 and LSR305. Strange, but in your test I can't hear the excess bass at RP5G3. Mids have RP5G3 slightly lighted. The overall sound is a bit like Hi-Fi sound. LSR305 the most versatile monitor of these three pairs, but I can hear a little coloration in the vocal range. Thank you for sharing your experience. Three pairs in a single test is no worse than two pair.
@DSAUDIOreview
@DSAUDIOreview 7 жыл бұрын
I can see how Eris E5 could work well for vocal production and music production in general. I do not have experience with music production so my opinion on them is directed to people wanting to use them as a monitor for music listetning rather than music production. E5 is not very enjoyable to listen but that is not it's main purpose so I am OK with that ;) Both KRK and JBL are more enjoyable to listen.

One of the goal of monitors is to be as flat as possible. Sometimes being flat is a bit boring haha. But the Mixman goal is the make a song sounding good on his monitors yes, but he wants it to sound good on every speaker in the world :P So if he works on a too hyped monitors... perceptions will be tricked and the song won't sound good on other monitors (too much or not enough bass in exemple) I didn't had the chance to do a straight comparison like you did though and would love to do a similar exercice.

imho music choice was not really good in this case, only moonshine showed some real differences... LSRs won this one definitely, Presonus in 5" didnt really impress me, i like them more in 4.5/3.5 version, krk was surprisingly neutral, but still better than presonus...

the presonus seem to have incredible bass response, for their size, better than both of the others. the other two compensate, as is usual with insufficient bass response monitors, by emphasizing the low mids, which is a problem i've encountered in other speakers, and seem to have a slight high-mid boost as well, which makes them sound 'sparkly'. presonus sounds the flattest, jbl sounds the 'prettiest', namely that preceivable boost in the maybe 400 to 800 Hz makes them sound round and smooth. that's great for audition - and, aside for the bass response, they would be the best for that - not sure that's the best thing for audio production, though, where i think the presonus outclass the others. thanks for the comparison, man, it's excellent.
@DSAUDIOreview
@DSAUDIOreview 7 жыл бұрын
Spot on assessment! I agree that for music listening JBL is the best, while Presonus would be more useful as a tool for music production. Regarding the bass reproduction of Presonus it is good, but I have a bit of problem with slight upper bass boom, JBL and KRK do not have this problem, just my two cents. Cheers!

I bought the E5s, and, consistent with your video, I am amazed by how much bass they have. I used to mix on a pair of Behringer Truth B2030A, with a way bigger, 6.5” cone, and the Eris, with the wall placement acoustic setting activated (namely a -2 bB cut for up to 800 Hz) still had consistently more low end than the Behringers with the acoustic setting completely reset! I can hear the oomph on a kick that i could only hear the slap on before, which is amazing for a speaker that size - they almost seem like a toy. The lesser power output certainly plays a part in allowing the speaker to put out low end at a balanced level with the mids. You were right, there is a bass boom at around 100 Hz (depending on the song, between maybe 80 and 130 Hz), but compared to the Behringers, which had the same boom at around 160-250 Hz, and the other speakers in your test which seem to have the same boom in the lower mids (it's the low mids emphasis that I was talking about in my first comment), I paradoxically think that's a good sign. In my experience, all cheap monitors seem to have that boom just above the bass tipping point (the point where the low frequencies recover from the dip at the lower end of their frequency range, and pass the 0 dB mark), and the E5s having that lower is actually a plus, because it is in line with the frequency range limit being lower for the E5. All in all, it's not really that disturbing, because, unlike the others that have the boom in the low mids (mud zone) which kind of makes them unpleasant and counter-intuitive to mix on, the 100 Hz mark is where a soild bass hits, so it's digestable to work with, just remembering that the bass needs to sound a tad boomy - and you're fine. The stereo image is amazing, the clarity is better than that of the Truths. That boominess also comes accompanied by a bit of mud in between maybe 50 to the 150 Hz range, I think it's a result of giving more space to low end on small drivers. The bass is well present, but somewhat murky - not to say that you can't clearly differentiate frequencies on eq boosts, cause you can very well, so that's not a problem. That makes it a little dark down there, but if you get accustomed to that, the rest is beautiful. I imagine that if you can order things down there, on the E5s, without making the mix sound thin, the bass would sound crystal clean on anything else - I think they kind of have that Yamaha NS magic quality. They sound a lot less flattering than anything I've heard before, and more detailed (talking about cheap stuff, I've never tried $2000 Genelecs). All in all I am very favorably suprised by my purchase, and your video was good help in making my mind up, so i wanted to thank you again, and give you some detail. Take care!

Oh, I do not agree :) This video is good, so good that I hear all the same speaker features that I heard on live. I have heard each of these speaker from this comparison and I hear the same things which annoying me or I like. And the choice is obvious for me: Presonus - great analitycal sound. JBL is too flattened(but equally accros the spectrum), and KRK has some annoying in higher tones (just like Adam or Eve but more). So, if someone wants to choose, should very carefully listen to this video and then make a choice according to own preferences, because the quality of this comparison is fantastic :) BTW I'am very curious what "tastes" could be heard here in comparison tyo higher class, for example Genelec 8020 :) I'm going to buy those Genelecs (with some sub) - they have smaller membrane but for that reason the comparison would be even much more interesting. Maybe there is no sense to buy such expensive speakers ..? ;)

Vocals - jbl is cold, presonus lacks intimacy (sibilants) - maybe new XT is better, krk - lacks texture and detail. Funky guitar - eris is better, due to pronounced low midrange, vikings - jbl is great. Krk is good for rhytms due to woofer excursion. Tonally Eris is more noticeable from the rest, but it is not the most beautiful kind of tones still, probably due to too thick driver material. Very good song choice with representative styels.

I am not listetning to music in anechoich chamber and I could only guess most people do not as well. It is nice to check the graph but It has very little to do with how speakers sound in real life. I have no control over how someone use this video, what kind of headphones or speakers he use or and what kind of judgement he does after. In my opinion quality of sound in those videos is a good representation (not perfect, of course) of how they sound in real life, as long as You use good headphones or speakers (headphones are prefered). I think most people understands that ;) Regarding the room treatment, of course it is nice and preffered to have it. I personally have some absorbtion panels in my space to kill the echo, but let's face it, most people do not have them in their spaces. I understand what You are trying to say, for You what I do here is not proffesional enough and I accept that. I try to make my videos as proffesional and useful as I can at the given moment. Presonus never was a manufacturer of studio monitors even less a specialist. The mark under draft everything in China and puts its name, stamps products. Professional use of Presonus ages badly, grow olf rather bad... except the small products as the Présonus blue tube which is excellent. Each the job(business). JBL is the greatest world specialist, the inventor of the studio monitor more than 45 years ago. No possible comparison with other marks with the exception of Tannoy or JM LAB or Genelec, of the professional world. This kind of test is completely stupid.

I don't think so, while they might be new at making monitors, for the price and features and build quality they're amazing, I used a set of presonus for 4 years without a problem, they had the sun facing them from the back directly all day to the point where it got really hot and they worked the whole day with no problem even having that heat on them, I dropped them a few times, I blew a fuse once, I used them in a room too small and a room too big and let me tell you they're a solid set of monitors, way better than krk who's been doing it for ages, as well presonus is quickly developing their own technology for monitors, you seen the presonus R65 or presonus Sceptre? Yeah those are seriously good. I love JBL as well and own a set of the LSR305's myself. Oh and fyi, JBL is manufactured in China too, a lot of things are and that doesn't make it bad as long as it's got good quality control and presonus definitely has that.
