Studio One is by far my favorite DAW, but I've been on Artist for a long time so having a Pro only option that costs more doesn't appeal to me. Artist does everything I need and I'm pretty sure that upgrade was only $99 every couple of years. The annual renewal for updates is very Pro Tools-ish. (One reason I left Pro Tools for Studio One.) The increased cost isn't going to ruin my finances, but I'm not convinced that it's really going to benefit me in any significant way either. If you can use the program without updates, you can buy an update every 5 years. The point is different, whether the user will be obliged to buy updates annually otherwise the program will simply not work. But as I understand it is possible to buy once the program and constantly use, and update to buy as needed. Sometimes some updates are not worth 10-20 dollars, so you should not buy such an update. Or will upgrading from version 6 to version 10 become more expensive than upgrading from 6 to 7?

Feel very uneasy about it myself as the recent releases have tended to be short changed on the core DAW functionality whilst focusing on attracting other user-groups to the product. So really the old price bought us value that would be repaid in stages over the few years between upgrades. So they need to prove to us established users that paying what it a much higher price overall, is actually worth it. For me the Lukas add-on was good as it directly addressed shortfalls in the core product and Presonus need to do far more of that within these subscriptions to entice me to pay the $149 more than every other year at most. You only need to sit down with SO for a few days to realise where easy and significant upgrades are needed to the core product. But rather than addressed in what should have been V2, completely ignored. So in making this move SO have set a very high bar for themselves as that extra fee could be better spent on another DAW.

I still think S1 is top tier for recording, mixing, etc and their UI and Macro functionality is 2nd to none. However, the creator is second tier with almost nothing in that area for years.. 7 looks hopefull, but we will wait to see what the annual fee actually gets you. Hey man, I enjoyed your video and your perspective but just a small correction. First though, to be clear I do no work for Presonus but I am a well known user within the S1 Community. You indicated that major releases where several years apart. This is incorrect. In the past releases have been roughly 18 months plus or minus a few. Each major release had between 4 to 5 minor releases. These releases contained bug fixes and often, new features. This new model is compressing that timeline of major releases if we go by number of minor-releases. Putting 4 scheduled releases into 12 months means a more reactive and consistent response to the customer base. So why has this perhaps happened? Well if you scaled your development environment because you had the financial ability to do so, due to subscription and Fender income then nudge nudge wink wink as Python said. Now does that mean you are paying more over a shorter period of time, well yes if you want to look at that way. In reality just pay the upgrade when a bug that impacts you or a feature you want comes out. There is no time limit. Wait a few years if you want. After all it's a choice. One that you can make every quarter if you want! Cheers a new subscriber.
@VinnyLePes3 ай бұрын
I don’t understand the frustration of getting updates for a year vs. two. If you are only upgrading every few years, you are already only getting new features when you shell out for an upgrade. So you can still wait a couple years and upgrade for $149. How is this any more expensive for people who don’t upgrade every year? And I’m speaking perpetual license here. Subscription users pay every year either way (or monthly).

I have no trust in great S7 updates, why should it be better than yet? You will get faster updates, but if it will mostly be bugfixing, that's not great.
@VinnyLePes3 ай бұрын
I disagree about bug fixing. Subscription models often incentivize shiny new features, and companies that adopt them often let bugs go for years without fixing them because they need to work on perception of value by having constant new features. This sucks for people who support them for years with the idea that they are newer in the market and will fix everything in time. Adobe comes to mind, there are bugs that have been around for years that keep getting ignored so they can roll out new features to justify their subscription model.
