Conor asked "why don't you drink" (10:09) because he knows the Koran prohibits drinking alcohol and Khabib is a devout Muslim. But ... it was all a setup. An obviously pre-meditated setup, for the punchline which didn't come until the very last note in the presser. When Conor revealed... after first making Dana speak directly into the microphone that the Proper 12 was a sponsor of the fight ... "its on the canvas!", I suddenly realized why he didn't throw that drink in Khabib's face. He didn't need too. Virtually the entire setup... from the drinking on stage.. to sneaking the bottles in.. to offering Khabib a drink.. to possibly being even drunk... was not simply a promotion for his own brand of whiskey. It was a setup to "smash Khabib's face" into the fact that his wrestling was going to promote alcohol - something his deeply held religious beliefs abhors. I now wonder if the reporter who mentioned whiskey and "assalamualaikum" in the same sentence was a plant by Conor. Maybe that's a stretch of the imagination, but it - and Khabib's furious response to that reporter even speaking the name whiskey with a phrase associated with Allah - played right into Conor's entire gameplan for that night. I couldn't have been the only one who was surprised by Khabib's furious response to that reporter, after the reporter had solicitously said "assalamualaikum" to him. At first I assumed - like I'm sure most people did - that Conor focused so much of the press conference on whiskey because, duh, Conor was launching his new product line. But do you think its any coincidence that "Its on the Canvas, just like Khabib's blood will be" was the very last thing Conor said at the presser. In fact, it struck me as a super stilted and awkward question to ask Dana: "Is Proper 12 going to be an official sponsor of the fight?" Almost like it was a pre-planned setup for Conor to be able to force Dana to say "yes, yes its an official sponsor of the fight" to Conor immediately seguing to the big reveal of the night - "Its on the Canvas. Its on the fucking canvas." At which point Conor IMMEDIATELY said: "ok let's wrap this up now". Because he wanted to end on that note. And knew he was going to end on that note even as he was shoving whiskey in Khabib's space. When he was doing that, he knew Khabib would refuse - thus demonstrating how anti-alcohol Khabib is - and authentically so. But like I said, it was all a setup, for Conor's endgame 30 minutes later. We all knew that Khabib would be a super tough nut to crack. He's never lost a round, for god's sake. But we also all know how much Khabib likes to ask the big question - "why?" over and over and over again in his head. "Why am I fighting to promote whiskey - something Allah abhors? Why? Why? Answer me this." is the tape that Conor was hoping to plant inside Khabib's head that night. I wouldn't be surprised if its NOT "on the canvas" that night. Conor just wanted Khabib to be stewing with that visual over the next few weeks. At least that's how Conor's strategy appeared to me to be last night. TL;DR - All the focus on whiskey wasn't just about promoting Proper 12. IMO, Conor was using Proper 12 to try to get make Khabib's head boil over the next couple weeks. There's nothing more blood-boiling to a deeply religious person than to "make" them do something against their beliefs.
