Thanks so much for your careful and detailed explanations. My son and I just did this job and finished tonight, and you were there on the I pad to coach each step.our long bolt was stuck just like yours. We used a 24 tooth per inch saws all hacksaw blade to cut the head off and then pound the bolt through the rusted connection. The new bolt was only 24 bucks. Thanks to your guidance, my son and his family can use their car again, and we had a good time together doing it.

Shaun I wanted to take a moment and give you my sincere thanks and appreciation for helping me in replacing the rear left wheel bearing on my son's 2006 Subaru Impreza Wagon. I used a combination of this video and your 2.0 version video to make it happen. Usually I like to be methodical and to corroborate approaches by watching multiple videos and looking for similarities, differences, tips etc. Your video was by far the most methodically, logical and best instructional piece out of all the videos I watched (and there were many) - two thumbs up on your teaching method, your video angles, cadence and overall style of video. The only issue my son and I ran into was when we got impatient and careless and ended up breaking the ABS tone ring when we were trying to get the old bearing race off the hub! Every lesson has a price and we learnt ours on that mistake. From the bottom of my heart I wanted to thank you for helping us complete the wheel bearing replacement successful with a feeling at the end of it that is absolutely priceless. I wish I could do more to express my thanks than simply subscribing to your channel. Please keep up the content and the super high quality - I look forward to all your future videos!

GOOD JOB explaining the reasoning for the tool use, what surfaces to press against and why. I liked that you also said what the importance of each seal had, and how to reason through any orientation requirements. I almost panicked when I saw the tapered bearing go in dry, but then you added grease before the last outer press, and I said, "Ahhh... THERE it is!" :::grin::: Nice job, sir. I found this quite informative, because I may be doing a hub bearings replacement on the front of my '98 Trooper this spring, when I replace the CV shafts to replace cracked outer boots. @MiJaAr5 жыл бұрын
Great video and very well done. I have used those press kits for years and they are really good for most bearings. That being said I have found some bearings that really resist being pulled mechanically. I did finally get a hydraulic press. One observation, when you are pressing the bearing back in, if you turn the outside press flange around and align the relief on the flange with the actual inner bearing you don't need to separate the bearing and chance getting foreign material in the bearing leading to a shortened life. I've done this many times. It works really well. Just trying to save you time and possibly having to replace the bearing. Great job!
@EasyFixShaun5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! The way you are describing works really well on sealed bearings only. For "sealed" press-in bearings that method is perfect and is the only way to do it since the bearing doesn't come apart. For that to work the inner bearing race needs to be recessed into the bearing far enough so that the flat surface of the tool presses on the outermost race only. Subaru bearings are "non sealed" press-in bearings. They require extra seal to be installed once the bearing is installed. The inner bearing on this Subaru sticks out beyond the end of the outer race by about 1/8”. If I did press on the the inner bearing that way I would destroy the bearing by bernelling the bearing races. There’s no adapter in the kit to accomplish the correct diameter and have the correct “dish”to not push on the inner bearing. You could make a special tool to do it that way. I wish I had one! But the tool kit doesn't come with one. Pressing on the inner race would be bad. That would put all the force on the inner race, then through the roller bearings and into the outer race and apply the needed force to push the outer race into the bore/housing. All of that pressure will destroy a bearing. Usually not at first, but they usually prematurely fail from “dimples” or bernelling in the outer races by applying pressure through the rollers. Its a common way for failure when installed that way. I have seen several fail within months. I agree that way could save time and debris getting into bearings and prolonging life, but only on a bearing where the inner race is over flush to the outer race. The video shows how it needs to be done on a Subaru with the tool kit or removing the knuckle and using a press. The video is generic and the basic principles are all the same to get the bearings installed. Just make sure you press on the outer race ONLY.

The thing about it if you take the whole hub off and you have a hydraulic press it's really super easy you can even heat it up if you need to

Correct. Many ways to do things and you method isn't bad except heating is unnecessary in the pressing process on a traditional press. The press in in case took is the only method that doesn't effect the alignment adjustment bolts in some cases. As long as the cv-axle can be removed from bearing with disturbing any alignment bolts, wheel bearing can be serviced with out disturbing alignment in some cases which can be helpful 😀🔧

You should be using oil on the threads of that tool. Also oil up the sides of where the bearing gets pressed into the sides of the housing. You always want to have lubricant when you’re pressing anything together. And the tool will also greatly benefit from some light machine oil.
@EasyFixShaun4 жыл бұрын
There is a light coating of oil on the threads of the tool it's just a little hard to see. Pressing the bearing in or out with oil seems like a good idea and it doesn't seem to hurt anything but I do not recommend it. Interference bearings are meant to go together hard so they don't shift their position in their housings. Lubrication could effect that. It would be like lubricating a press in ball joint for example. It is not generally a good idea. I have pressed in hundreds and hundreds of bearings. Not one was lubricated and not one had an issue from lack of lubrication. The parts are designed to be pushed together dry. I have not seen any need for lubrication. It's just my opinion and experience. If you want to do yours with lubrication though I can totally respect that.😃 🔧🔧

@willwade11014 жыл бұрын
If you are careful you can remove that bearing race with a mig welder. While moving the shaft out of the way carefully weld a bead around the angled area of the race. As it cools the race will shrink and you can usually pull it our with your fingers.

In the process of this job right now. Of course rust is my issue. Guess I'm going to rent tools from AutoZone today. Damn long bolt that goes through the knuckle is stuck of course and I don't wanna shear it off. Lots of penetrant and 2 days later still the same. Got it to move a little but still won't slide out. I will be back at it after work. Nice vid. Gave me some more ideas. I need all the help I can get on this one. Damn 99 Forester. Can't beat the 650 dollars I paid for it though.
@EasyFixShaun5 жыл бұрын
Nice man! I would scrap getting that long bolt out of it won’t budge. If it comes out easily that’s the best way to repair. If it doesn’t parts are hard to come by if anything breaks there. I would highly recommend taking the exhaust down and lowering the rear axle 2/3 feel until the cv-axle slips out of the bearing and knuckle completely. Then set it off to the side and leave the inner shaft connected to the rear axle. Now the bearing is completely accessible for the the removal and install. Its seems like a lot to do, but its not too bad. That’s how I do it 9/10 times. The long bolt on the knuckle doesn't usually come loose for me either. If you do the exhaust and axle drop method, you save a ton of time and effort on the back end. Those rusty bolts don’t need to be disturbed on the bottom of the knuckle and the control arms plus you don’t need an alignment after the repair.
@HOOD23585 жыл бұрын
@@EasyFixShaun thanks for the help. I have more hope now than before. I'd rather not break things even though I'm good at it lol. I will try your method and say to hell with the long bolt.
@EasyFixShaun5 жыл бұрын
That's what I would do. It seems like you are taking the long way around dropping the exhaust and axle. Rust is the main problem. Work around it and get the job done. It should work fine for you. I usually hacksaw the muffler off somewhere convenient to get it out of the way and repair with a sleve and clamps. That seems to be better than lowering the whole exhaust. Usually rusty exhaust is another problem. So that may help. Please keep me posted and good luck! Take your time. :)

If you put the new bearing in the freezer before you start it goes in easier, it'll expand again by the time you press the hub into the inner race.

I've gotta do this ASAP on our 2004 Forester right rear bearing. I'm ordering parts/tools now based on your video, no knuckle required? I've heard of requiring both the bearing kit and the knuckle. Only if the knuckle is damaged I'd figure... Thanks for the great vid man!
@EasyFixShaun4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Awsome thank you very much!! You won't need the knuckle unless it is damaged for some reason while working on it. I never replace them for bearings. I have replaced a few front ones for ball joint pinch bolts cracking off while replacing ball joints. Bearings you should be good. Don't forget your seals. You will need 2 for the front. 3 for the rear. 😀

What would cause the bearing to spall in first place? Great video. Regards Charles
@EasyFixShaun3 жыл бұрын
Usually that is caused by a lack of lubrication, overloading, or low quality materials like soft metal. With high quality bearings it only usually only happens with high mileage on the bearing.
@aeroflopper3 жыл бұрын
Can also just cut the bearing with welder and save a few hours of your life, the bush removal tool you used can be substituted with a bit of stud bolt.
@EasyFixShaun3 жыл бұрын
That could work for some process's of replacement. But requires tremendous skill and knowledge to avoid damaging other components. Installing the hub into the bearing will still need the tool. If it isn't used or an "off car" press is not used, the bearing could easily be damaged. It is possible though I agree 😃🔧. Check out my new press in 2.0 video. I put a ton more information and tools in it to easily get the job done on the car. If you do it right, you can avoid changing the alignment settings. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmbFqJ-BgNWoqc0

@EasyFixShaun4 жыл бұрын
The old inner bearing is bad anyways so might as well use it! Make sure you don't push a new bearing in that way. I mean... I have done it in the past but its bad practice. There is a high risk of bearing bernelling. The roller bearings can damage the race with all the pressure needed to force the bearing in. So when going in... use the outer portion to push on only. You can do that all day long with no damage risk. I am glad the extension worked for you. Its a perfect tool for that sometimes. No problem 😊
