Presser foot explanation on Juki DU-1181N

I have an 1181 also and it works exactly the same way. The lift lever really only lifts the center feet, The lift bar under the table works much better at lifting the walking part of the foot. I mostly use the machine for re upholstery work and find the machine handles delicate fabrics like velvet without adding any fabric artifacts; marks etc, if I relax the string pressure on the knobs at the top of the machine.

Do you have a hard time gathering fabric like tulle? How do you adjust the machine to handle it? I have this machine
