Went to UCSD too and feel the same way about the tutor preference/elitism. I got a C+ in CSE12 and considered changing majors when I took CSE30. Ultimately stuck with it and got an internship at Google as a rising senior. Now I’m a senior SWE at Google. Don’t give up!

I don't think I'll ever be in school for a CS degree but it was still comforting somehow to hear that even tho both of you didn't have the best GPAs, y'all have great careers. Thanks so much for sharing your story, Maya!

I'm kinda glad I got the swe job first then pursued my cs degree part-time when I hear people talk about their college experience 😂 It seems almost designed to ground your self-esteem to dust before you even get started! Glad ya'll made it, great interview! ✨

It’s funny. Intuit and Slack are two software I’ve been using this year. I used the former to pay TurboTax. And my dorm uses Slack to communicate. Thank you for sharing! Maya. And making our lives easier.

Good call-out on estimates - never in my entire career have I seen an estimate be true to reality. Thinks will always come up to derail even the most perfect engineering plan.

Nobody should be studying months for an interview at a company. This is a failure of industry to value people's education and experience, and google really needs to step up. I'm glad Maya had such a positive experience at slack, I wish I could've said the same for my one startup job. I'm Black and now finishing up an MS in CS and due to what happened to me, I'm never going back to the private sector if I can help it.

This is not a failure. A lot of people who claim to be software developers cannot code that well in practice. Why? The market is filled with people who are taught without experience from universities. So a degree is not all that good of an indicator anymore. Self taught developers are random in what they know and their experience. And big companies need to filter through a LOT of candidates. This system they have made is there to make sure that no one who is completely not fit for the job will get accepted. As for the kind of work and dedication people need to get accepted is just "part of the process". As for small companies, they should really stop this nonsense. They can just individually or semi systematically check their candidates in a more sane fashion. That just comes down to culture.of companies.

@@kandlerziv4733 If you can't figure this out without a coding test, you're probably a bad interviwer.

@@CrashOverride332 Yeah, I agree with that. Now that I reread what I wrote it might seem that I support this kind of interview style. I just don't think it is a failure. If you have a good interviewer who knows how to ask questions about one's past projects, and sees the process of his approach to solving a problem he faces. Along with a technical dive into what was done, this will be a significantly better approach than what is currently done.
