I'm starting, not my first engineering position but the one that is going to change the trajectory of my career, this coming Monday so this video is perfect timing. I'm nervous about what is going to be expected of me, if I'm going to be able to do the work since they're using technologies that are new to me and whether or not I'm going to do a good job. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time and try to treat it like school by being curious, asking questions and doing my best.

Woah big news holy moly! Congrats on getting back into the career path. Honestly, I think it would only help your channel. I’ve noticed a ton of software KZbin channels quit their job to pursue YT, but eventually they run out of things to say. Especially if the channel is focused around the industry they just left haha. So overall, I don’t know the context as to why you rejoined the workforce-but I think it was the right choice. Here’s to continued awesome context alongside a blossoming career.

In the teams I have been in so far, new team members (no matter if they'd just finished university, college or whatever or if they were experienced) are treated like any other team member. The training is on the job, experience comes through pair-programming, mentoring, code-reviews, trainings, slack time etc. There is no individual responsibility to build a good product, it's always the responsibility of the whole team. Hence, new team members have always felt welcome. Of course, when hiring people the main factors are not skills or experience, but more on how eager and willing they are to learn and participate and their ability to work with others in a team. In addition teams are often supported by a Scrummaster, people lead or team coach to make sure everyone feels happy. In addition, often a "champion" is assigned to new employees to help them navigate through difficult situations within the company. It's investment for the company and hence the company will ensure that new employees feel welcome. However, this all might be different for US companies, and you might need services such as formation.

This bit about "they're not expecting you to be productive right away" is entirely on a per-company basis. I've interviewed with and worked at companies that expected you to be productive as soon as you walked in the door. Ford even interviewed me on things that weren't in the job description. It's toxic as hell and still happens, even at companies that really don't deserve to demand that kind of labor. Now, Formation might only care about FAANG, but there are still a ton of companies out there with unreasonable demands, and I think these videos should start being inclusive of experiences outside of California.

i miss your videos and have been rewatching old ones as i, a recent CS graduate, am on the job hunt for my break into tech ! with the tech recession happening at faang level companies, ive just been met with rescinded offer after rescinded offer because of the layoffs and hiring freezes. hopefully you're doing well! i think i saw somewhere that you're working in software dev again? which is why you've put youtube to the side, but i hope that endeavor is just as fulfilling for you and your personal growth!

I personally want to congratulate everyone who is an iOS dev. As a person with a web dev background, I tried it and all I felt was a world of confusion and 2 groups of people telling me to use UIKit or SwiftUI. I won’t go into much more detail but I decided that if I want to make an app and put it into the App Store, I will go the hybrid route.
