Nice video on an interesting and novel topic...thanks! That said, I did want to make a correction. Threadfin shad actually have air bladders just like gizzard shad do (and both of them have muscular gizzards too by the way). I'm not sure where the idea that they are an airbladderless fish comes from (I do see that on the internet some times), but I have scientific articles that describe the shape/size of the air bladder on threadfin that we use in my research on hydroacoustic sampling for shad (massively expensive fish finders we can use for quantifying fish biomass; see Whitehead and Blaxter 1989 Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 97(4):299-372 and Jech et al 1995 Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 98:2262-2269). Still, very nice video....thanks for your work on it.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I was always told they didn’t, that’s why they are always swimming. I did a quick google to verify what I thought I understood and found the same answer. I believe you though and will look into it further for my own curiosity. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I catch Gizzard shad on the Black Warrior River in Alabama that easily weigh 8 lbs or more on spinnerbaits and lures . I thought they tarpon at first because they would junp out of the water like tarpon and had a bony mouth like tarpon making them hard to hook and land . Finally someone told me afyer laughing silly , that they were Gizzard shad . Best place to get action is the water outflow from the Gorgas Steam Plant . You can catch them on almost every cast with crappie jigs but you will lose most when they jump .

Definitely not Gizzard shad . But some places call a type of herring an American Shad. But it's more similar to Skip jack herring than shad .

That is pretty cool. Most likely not gizzard. Could the possibly be Asian carp?

Two winters ago I saw a gizzard shad kill here in SW Missouri. All washed up on the bank like jellyfish on a beach.

Dang! Do you think it was the cold or something got into the lake?

@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing It was about 2 weeks of really cold weather and the lakes got some ice. When the weather broke it flipped to 70 and had super high winds out of the south. I think they came up high when the ice broke and got stunned then the waves blew them on the bank. That or they all just jumped out of the water lol

Nice video, but you aren’t 100% accurate on Gizzard shad. When they spawn they just drop eggs wherever and more important the smaller Gizzard shad 6 inches or less form MASSIVE schools in the winter looking for the warmest water they can find. Typically a south facing bank and they will stay right at the top of the water column all winter long in the same spot. They do this every winter around my dock…. kzbin.info7A2G6PNhLdo?si=VqJ68N9xnwVo7Tcr
