Dan is in his element/comfort zone doing landscaping work. This is where he really excels. You can see the excitement in his eyes and hear it in his voice. Creating this secret garden enclosed by espaliered fruit trees is closer to his real passion. He is willing to put aside finishing the roof even though winter is coming in order to undertake this massive installation of 1400 plants.

In tree felling we call those "widow-makers". It was a set-up with good intentions but turned out to be a clear example of surprises - sometimes deadly - that can occur. A tree trunk can appear solid all the way up, but on occasion interior rot occurs that shows no outwardly sign at all - until this happens.

Scrap the swimming pool. Get a large cattle trough to cool off in. This is a huge property and will have lots of maintenance and expense issues. A pool is a lot of work and money! Everyone I have known who put swimming pool in ended up digging the pool back out. Plus, Nick's children are small. Nobody can watch little children and all of their friends adequately. Drowning in swimming pools is a number one killer for children. Keep your money in your pocket.

Another glorious episode where Dan and Nick do their best to frighten us to death with their feats of dareing-do. And the sun is shining! I was watching the bats flitting in and around our church the other evening, they really do look spectacular, if a bit messy. Those hips look like they might make an ideal bat hang out, if you can seal off the insides properly from the rest of the roof structure. The bats would look great flitting about the tower and roofs, and are great at insect control. Or maybe an owl roost?

Hey Nick; I've been using 8 braid nylon boat anchor line to tension my trees. Nylon anchor line has a LOT of stretch in it and it acts like a giant rubber band so when the tree breaks instead of the line going slack the rope keeps pulling on it as it moves and really helps guide the tree to exactly where I want it. It really helps with trees that you're unsure of what their balance is and makes for a much safer fall.
@thomasw.eggers43035 сағат бұрын
Nylon rope story: Back 7 decades ago, when I was a teenager, I tried using a nylon waterski towrope. The problems were (1) Lean into the rope for a fast turn, nylon stretches, down you go, and (2) When starting, the rope stretches, the skier falls and lets go, the rope handle flies forward into the boat (on one occasion, the boat driver caught the handle).
