What makes this project so especially impressive is the way that you guys had all of these wildly dispersed plotlines and plot threads and timelines to work with, given the disjointed ending of Dance, and the random spread of Winds sample chapters. It has never been more evident than in this Jaime chapter what a good job you have been doing tying everything together and making things make sense. You are all doing excellent collaborative work here, and this chapter felt like such a good bridge back to Feast, continuing those themes in the Riverlands. This project actually gives me hope of seeing this story finished in a satisfying way one day. Can't thank you all enough. Also.... Revenant Cleos Frey: CONFIRMED.

There are so many layers to the "every feast deserves a dance". It's a call back to waymar Royce and the others, Jaime and Brienne, balon and hotah, plus the obvious feast for crows/dance with dragons allusion. Top tier writing here. I personally don’t think GRRM is going to kill off Stoneheart so early on… I think she’d probably make it either to the end of Winds or to Spring. She’s just too good of a spanner in the works to kill early on and I think she actually helps tie up some storylines and helps kill off a bunch of characters. Like GRRM introducing time travel, you don’t introduce a zombie Catelyn only to kill her off a couple of chapters later.

I didn't really understand how they sparred. Did they have blunt or wooden swords with them? Or were they using their normal, sharp swords and fully armored? Otherwise, you can't really tell, who's better, since both have would have to pull their blows constantly, to not kill each other. Swords are dangerous.
@alexsnewhandle2 ай бұрын
the latter, but I don't think Brienne is actually attacking Jaime, just parrying to defend herself.
@davidgretzschelcommunicati16302 ай бұрын
@@alexsnewhandle Yeah, I guess that limits what you can really do in sparring. But it's probably enough to practice some mechanics and get a measure of how good someone still is. It'd have been interesting, if the characters had thought about the problem. Like Jaime going off with "but if we had sparring swords and proper protective equipment I could have caught her here" and Brienne laughing at that being obvious cope. These people are "dancers", but we're limited in how they actually relate and bond with one another via the art. But arguably GRRM doesn't care about accurate sword play mechanics either, so... I just wish they would do better than him here.

@joefo4582 ай бұрын
@@SantiagoGarza-bg9wp I always assume that if a talented writer’s chapter feels meandering, lost, or time-draggy, it’s because that’s what they want us to absorb about how the character is feeling during it. 2:00 I think my idea to set up a rosby/farring/crakehall -frey alliance in this chapter for the future baelish/wode/vale invasion plot would have worked well, given how little happened and how we're in the right spot timing and location wise. Alayne and Sam do talk about the Freys, but not the farring freys, nor how the rosby and crakehalls have a reason to team up with the farring freys. I guess there is still time (depending on how soon we want the Vale invasion) which can then interact with the Wode brothers, but I think a mention here would've been better since then it doubles as reminder/foreshadowing/set-up of Gilbert Farring in the later Arianne chapter. Plus setup always feels better if it's setup a while before the payoff instead of immediately before. Oh well, I hope we still end up doing something with the farrings/wodes.

Although maybe she does think Arya might have died at Saltpans, thinking that she died when the Hound died. (How else would he have lost his helmet?) Preston, I'm not quite sure whether "filling the gaps in timeline" with chapters in which almost nothing happens is a good idea. Jaime could have travelled with Brienne "offscreen", he even could have been captured "offscreen", as it was in the Whispering Wood. The genius of George RR Martin manifested at least in the first two novels by showing us mainly scenes that were adding sth to the story, avoiding infameous "fillers" that plagued Dance with Dragons. In my opinion it would be best to take inspiration from Martin from the times when he was in his best, not when he was beginning to struggle what led him spiraling down to the current creative crisis.
