This. My hair was literally down to my knees until I was like 16 because my mom REFUSED to let me cut it. I really started hating it, mostly because it limited the hairstyles I could do to one plait or two pigtail plaits. Now I have a bob that sits just on my shoulders and every time I head to a hairdresser for a trim or smth, I'm like "cut what you need to ends-wise, I'm not precious about the length" because it's JUST HAIR

Right? My teens have their own conversation with the stylist about what they want. My 14yo went in with hair down past her shoulders and came out with half of her head shaved. As long as the cost is the same and they're happy I truly don't care.

You're the kind of stylist I absolutely trust my kids with, my oldest is exploring what makes them comfortable, and their hair grows so fast that if they get a cut they don't like, it's grown out in 2 weeks anyway, so letting them get what they want can only build their confidence. I made a deal with my hairdresser that I would step outside for some "fresh air" while she cut my kid's hair. She knew my ex would not allow a short cut, but our child was crying everyday because it was long and uncomfortable. So she winked, and said she'd make sure it wouldn't be shorter than shoulder length (the length my ex agreed to, because I had fought to allow our kid to get a haircut) When I got back, most of the hair was shoulder length, and since my little boy wanted a side shave, and there was no one who could say no, she gave him just that. My ex was furious, but my son was crying tears of joy. This was when my ex realised he no longer had power over us. All because a hairdresser listened to her client's wishes.

Some of my first memories as a child were men who I didn't know telling me that my hair was so beautiful and to never cut it. My mom also never let me cut it, even though I wanted to so badly consistently for years. Like the girl in the video, my hair was also really hard to maintain and I had mats multiple times that I was always super embarrassed about. Once I got lice and excitedly asked my mom if that means we would have to cut my hair (nope). I started cutting my own hair around 15 probably, which made my mom really sad, and didn't look the best but I was happy! But I've kept it short since then (I'm 22 now) and I love it. Please just let your kids get their hair cut if they want to. Hair can always grow back (assuming no medical conditions are involved) if the child ends up not liking the cut. There's also something to say about the parents like the parent Siiri played in this video but that's another discussion

I also have hair like that. Very curly, very beautiful, and when I was young it was a golden blonde color. My mom was sad when I decided to dye it red in high school, and sad when I graduated and decided to cut it above the shoulders. But she still thought I looked great and made sure to tell me so, even if it wasn't what she personally preferred. (my mother is also very blunt and would not hesitate to say something if it really did look bad) My sister's natural hair color is a deep chestnut brown, but in high school she wanted to dye it green and shave one side. My mom said cool and learned how to use the shaver so she could help. She preferred my sister's old hair, (I did too tbh, but it was her hair) but it was more important that my sister liked her own look. It's just hair.

I had a stylist do this for me when I was 17! I wanted a bob because I couldn't maintain the long hair, but my mum wouldn't budge. While my mum took a phone call the stylist was like "okay so what length & style?" and started doing what I wanted instead. She told my mum she accidentally had grabbed the regular scissors instead of thinning scissors, but was already salvaging it into a nice hairstyle to fix the mistake and was very sorry its so short now. The best part was that my mum ended up admitting it suited me more than long hair, after we left the salon of course, hahaha.

My parents were always supportive of whatever I wanted to do with my hair, and I am so grateful for that! The first time I went in for a haircut on my own though I inisited I wanted just a trim (my hair was really long--I'd only been doing trims for a year and was careful to not use heat so it would stay nice and healthy and I was so excited to go home with my long, healthy hair!!) and THE HAIR STYLIST CUT IT TO CHIN LENGTH!!!! I was so sad. I had tried so hard to keep my hair healthy while growing it out and she just chopped it all off insisting that would be better. I cried when I got in the car. I hate when the stylist insists on just doing what they want regardless of what you actually ask for.

I have the opposite issue. All 3 of my kids want short hair, and the stylists never feel comfortable doing it. I myself keep a pixie, or just a bit more grown out from that. Haven't had it past my shoulders in about 15 years. My oldest is 7 and regularly asks for undercuts, and side shaves. She likes long hair, but doesn't like how thick it is. And she won't let me help maintain it. She is special needs with a speech delay, but she is able to communicate what she wants. I can't tell you how many times a stylist has tried to convince her not to cut it how she wants it. My middle has the prettiest curls, but has also been asking for short hair. She told me she doesn't like to pull it back or have it braided, but it gets in her way at school, so she wants it short. It'll be the first time she's done this. The last time we got her hair cut the stylist told me she didn't feel comfortable "cutting off her pretty curls" so she didn't take it as short as my daughter asked. We live by "it's hair it'll grow back" and it's a healthy way for my girls to express themselves. I need to find a stylist like you

Like guess who will be going to a nursing home when they're old bc they treated their kids like crap, DEBORAH?? All jokes aside tho, your parents chose to have you and they owe you a good life. As the child who had ABSOLUTELY no say in the matter, you owe your parents NOTHING. Like literally if they did right by you then like say thanks for raising you and giving it their best go or whatever, but you literally don't owe them to even talk to them let alone fcking deal with abuse. The worse part is when you try going no contact with someone like this they don't understand why you're not letting them abuse you anymore. Like the fcking mental gymnastics to avoid responsibility is insane to me.

This hits close to home. My mom always told me daughter's long hair is every mom's pride and honor. Although, it was never this controlling, rather manipulative:"Are you sure? But you look so good with long hair. You know it'll make me sad. And if you'll regret it, it's gonna take a lot of time to grow out again. Your hair is so great and healthy, why would you want to cut it? Look at mine, on the other hand, how I would love to have hair like yours. Everybody wants it." And then I had to wear the same braid every day, cause my heavy hair can't be put into anything else, anything different, anything prettier to at least convince me "pretty girls have long hair". I've had a bob for 6 years now and swore never to come back. Recently, I had some thoughts about growing it out. But now it's my decision, I hope I will be able to accept it as mine and not somebody else's achievement.

All I could think when she said she had thick hair was... What if it's hurting her head? It's why my hair is very, very short- it lessens occipital neuralgia and migraine pain. And... When I shaved my head for a cancer fundraiser I got told I was very pretty that way. That mom...is a jealous person, making a kid keep hair at an uncomfortable length because *she* would kill for that hair. My mom wanted a little girl whose hair she could brush etc. While I was "girly" in some ways...I was also a tomboy. I preferred short hair since I couldn't get my hair to grow past a certain length (always wanted the long hair so I could do braids). She just wouldn't let me buzz my head. I had pixie cuts as a kid and other short cuts as a teen. While my mom wasn't happy, she allowed me a measure of choice. I even got a haircut I ended up not liking but it was my choice and I learned from it.

for any teens in the comments that have this issue with parents, a few ideas: 1. cut it on ur own (to longer than u actually want it) at like 2 am in ur room, then u can have it trimmed professionally later. plus: shows ur parents that they cant reasonably control your body, con: possible punishment for rebellion 2. u could get gum or something stuck in your hair near the ends. be sure to get it very stuck but only with the ends of your hair. pros: u can claim it was an accident or a prank gone wrong by a friend, cons: easy to go Too Far with it and there are possible home remedies the parents may know 3. rebel in an even bigger way (and also get it cut) so that it seems less of a big deal in comparison. pros: shows ur parents they were super strict over something not that serious, cons: again, this is active rebellion. this will likely mean war.

This makes me so happy. I'm a teen, and my parents are definitely open to my hair being however I want it. I like my hair long, so I like having it grown out, but I know my parents wouldn't care if I cut it super short (it used to be short) or even if I wanted to dye it. I have dyed it before and in a few months, I'd love to do it again. Just the tips, cause I like my hair mainly how it is, but I used to have dyed tips and I loved it. I just do a lot of performance stuff, so I avoid it most of the time. But honestly, in December or so? After the musical? I'd be so down to dye the bottom again. Try out some new colors and stuff. I'm just glad that my parents are open to letting me try things out to see what I like. Maybe someday I'll dye it all, I don't know, but mostly I'm glad to know that whatever I want to do, they'll be open to

My mom did this to me growing up. I was very active and nearly literally drowned multiple times from hair that acted like kelp. I would sit on it. When I was 6, I snipped it myself. She carried me to the bathroom and threw a fit like I had gouged my eyes out. It wasn’t my hair until senior year AFTER pictures. Edit to add: for what would’ve been my brothers 40th I shaved my head for charity. The hair was donated. My mom told me it was ridiculous and I would look ridiculous but as soon as people started saying how awesome it was, she backed that train all the way to the station. Mom’s who live vicariously or survive on appearances are problematic.

As long as you don't think you'll be harmed because of it, you can always just go for it. Most parents get over such things eventually. My mom was completely against me shaving my head, I did it anyway. She doesn't love it, but she's over the shock of it. My dad was against hair dye, made a big fuss over how he would never allow it under his roof. I did it anyways, he was over it in a day or two. It's usually something that blows over petty quickly. And if it's truly something that they can't get over they can pay to dye it back, or you can just get it cut. It grows back.

Thankfully nothing like this happened to me but BOTH of my Grandma's told me about how their father's wouldn't allow them to cut their hair. My maternal Grandma was only allowed trims. Her hair was butt-length by the time she was in middle school and kids would tie it to her desk during class. She was literally being harassed and her dad didn't care. My paternal grandma could cut her hair a little but not much. One time she got it cut too short (even though she swears her dad agreed beforehand) and he didn't speak to her for A YEAR. This man seriously pretended his 14-15ish year old didn't exist for a year because she cut her hair too short. What the actual hell. I've always said my parent's would've killed me if I'd been born back then. I don't take bs from anyone (and no I'm not being a rebellious 13 year old, I'm 23 and of course kids should behave and all that but some stuff is just controlling and stupid)

I used to have hair that went down to my hips, had never had a haircut till I was maybe 13/14? I had been begging for the longest time to get it cut because I hated it, it was dense but fine so it tangled and knotted so easily. My Mum would brush and braid it every morning and she wasn't gentle, so it was so freaking painful, I'd be crying the whole time till she was done and my scalp would throb for hours after- but she'd say it was so beautiful and I was so lucky to have it and I should be grateful, so that was that. After one particularly horrendous session, my Dad took pity on me and said we were going out for shopping. Instead he took me to a hairdressers and got me a bob. I couldn't have loved him more at that moment. Miss you Pa.

That was so kind of you. My daughters father and stepmother both called her the night before she was scheduled to have her hair cut short and basically threatened her. She had recently been given a pet frog from the parents of her stepmom and told her that if she cut her hair short that they would take it away from her. She was so upset and cried all night long. I couldn’t believe that they were that cruel to her over a freaking hair cut. However she did it anyway and thankfully they were all talk and didn’t give away her pet.

When my brother and I were between like 10 and 16, our mom let us pick colors and dyed our hair herself. The colors weren't going to hurt us, and hair grows. We were kids and her logic was that we could have our fun and "get the crazy out". As a little kid, I had very tangly hair, so mom cut it. I was happy and comfortable with my short curls and camo cargo pants. I was unphased when adults mistook me for a boy. Let kids be comfortable, geez.

My mother refused to let me cut my hair when I was younger because I was her "pageant baby" and she also had the mindset that pretty girls must have long hair. I hated it so much because my hair was down to the back of my knees and I had very thick hair. She would constantly brush and maintain it (very roughly), I got frequent migraines and my hair often got caught in things (including a bike chain once). It didn't help that creepy older men would often comment on how "dainty and pretty" I was and how lovely my long red hair was. I mean, I'm fairly short, and unfortunately I've been told many times that longer hair made me appear more "childlike". I just wanted a more manageable style. So the night before my high school graduation, I had my stylist bestie chop it all off to a jaw length bob, bleached it and dyed it cherry red. Now I'm 25 and never let it grow past my shoulders because I prefer pixie cuts or short bobs.
