This video is to tell you about a very cheap modification that could save you a large repair bill in the future.
All models of Nissan Leaf can benefit from this mod and it costs less than £10.
The suspension struts are vulnerable to water pooling in the top of the strut mounting and if unchecked, could need replacing due to premature rusting.
Fitting strut covers will prevent this for just a few pounds.
This video shows you how to obtain the covers and how to fit them.
Here is a link to an eBay search that will show listings of the covers with the same part number '17141235901C': www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr... (I'm not affiliated with any of these sellers).

I stumbled across this advice, and so looked at the situation in my 2018 40 kWh Leaf. The nearside suspension strut end was pristine, but the offside one was already showing signs of rust and corrosion. I've cleared up the rubbish in the RH strut end and greased it and bought and installed the VW covers. Literally a five minte job! Many thanks for the heads-up on this!

@@RSThinks Keep in mind that its actually a very good idea to check the caps frequently. I have two Nissan Leafs and the caps won't stay put for more than a few weeks or months at the most. I had to constantly re-install them after they shook loose and were rattling around. I eventually used a little silicon to stick them down. Thanks for the demonstration, Rob. That's a typical cheapskate trick by a manufacturer, which will guarantee their dealers some after-market repair profit. Call it built-in obsolescence, if you like. It will be worthwhile to check that the caps are still in place after each service! The cynic in me says that they could be 'accidentally' forgotten by an unscrupulous repairer.

This metal cup is a replaceable part it's not an expensive the worst rusted example where on car fitted with caps packed with white grease because moisture can still get in but with the cap and grease it cannot evaporated away look up some of the worst examples they had caps fitted regular cleaning will reduce this it is sacrificial part the caps are cheap to replace and dinit failed that quickly. Paint with waxoyl will do just a good job if not better as it does not trap moisture

Great video, its the same for the 2023 Leaf. Caps for earlier leaf models fit perfect. i bought some that are a bit more domed in shape off amazon, but they snapped right in One Very Important thing though is you want to use a silicon Oring grease on the strut cups there rather than a lithium grease. Lithium grease is a petroleum based product and will degrade rubber and plastic. Its meant for metal on metal. So in this application silicone grease is what should be used

Ok, I’ve watched the video, ordered the parts from Ebay, cleaned lubricated and fitted these donut covers, and like the video water was only present on the drivers side only. But unless I’m wrong here, water will still get into the top of the struts…!! I fitted these in fine rain, so I could see how effective these covers are. Well the Centre of the donut ring acts like a mini reservoir and fills up. Once the water hits the top, it runs over the cover and back into the strut recess. The reason the water can’t escape is the actual strut has a 5cm protruding metal ring, which the donut cover fits inside this, blocking any water from escaping. Surely if this cover is to act like a gutter, the cover needs to finish on the other side of the strut ring. Comments Welcome.
@RSThinks
@RSThinks 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. I checked mine after a few weeks by removing the covers. While there was a tiny amount of water in the driver side recess, the grease had made a barrier and the nut was protected. The snug fit of the cover created a seal which kept the water away from the vulnerable parts, the nut and bolt of the strut.

After watching this video I did some investigation work and watched what was happening. It seems that rain/water is entering the bulkhead through the hole for the drivers side wind screen wiper, it then drips exactly on to the centre of the of the suspension strut and fills the depression with rain/water very quickly, they couldn't have made it more exact if they tried. The passenger side does not have this problem, but you are likely to get some residual moisture at some time. so I have put a plastic cover over the top as a temporary fix, after spraying with lithium grease and submitted a complaint to Nissan, that I consider they should come up with and fit a proper solution at their cost, as my vehicle is under warranty and I consider its a design error on their part, now waiting for a reply.

@hogsbass4817
@hogsbass4817 Жыл бұрын
I heard from Nissan and it appears each dealer makes up his own rules over issues like this and they have no control over them, but they have follow the fault reporting system system, that will eventually bring Nissan into the whole thing, but it has all been logged now at Nissan UK, so when it hits the fan sometime in the future, they cant say they didn't know now, I discovered in an article I came across, that some models come with the caps already, but I suspect its the American versions, as they will litigate over the smallest thing, so there you go, its been noted at Nissan Uk, not more I can do.

This has been an issue since the 2011 Leaf and I'm hearing the Versa and others have the same issue. It is called "planned obsolescence", like the nylon wheel in the handbrake actuator. Nissan designs the car to detoriate after the fabric warranty. Many other manufacturers do the same. It's despicable, but, as a smart consumer, we can fix this ourselves.

It is usually the left one only standing in front of the Leaf (you can see the above one is the same) - if you check above the struts you will find a little tray below the wiper stem that is where the water is coming from. Most leafs I have seen with covers have been fitted too late as the rust already took hold (its surface only) - the struts should be replaced before the top rust even becomes an issue as its lifespan is limited (unlike the video implies) - save yourself the lids and grease folks and replace the struts when needed instead - you are lucky to get ten years out of a set of struts and there is no way these will rust enough in that time.

@@swilbeth 😂neither - even if you leave the little covers off the struts will have reached their end of life span before the rust becomes a safety issue. Struts are good for five to ten years depending on your driving and the strictness of your countries vehicle testing stations.
