We've done the budget, now it's time for the deluxe upgrade!
First of all, I recommend checking out the earlier battery upgrade videos. Then check out this text based guide to get more familiar with what is needed. github.com/dalathegreat/Nissa...
This video just goes thru the specific challenges related to the larger 62kWh, and what extra work that is required to make it fit.
Part numbers:
The part number is 55020-5SJ1B for ePlus rear springs, 2 needed.

This is amazing. This kind of independent repair shop upgrades and repairs must be easy to implement by design; mandatorily. This will save millions of cars from scrapyards and prevent waste of resources. Thank you Dala.

Great job, no doubt about it. My wife drives a 2011 leaf since Nov 2010. She loves it. However, it only goes 32km (20 miles) at full charge now. I don't wanna mention the range when A/C is turned on. I looked around at the battery swap options. You won't believe how this turned into a business. I called tremendous of a number of junkyards where they get tier cars from the insurance company or directly from the people. Leafs arrive without a battery. Some people just collect them and sell them over the internet and you can tell that it is not cheap at all. This became a good business. You need to do a great calculation that if the swap makes sense, Nissan offers a new battery if you are ready to pay $12,000 CAD if you are ready to pay 2011 GEN1 battery pack. My question to you is: As we all know, there is nothing wrong with the car and there is no need to buy a new car until cars would have full capability to have fully autonomous driving. Why Nissan just produces the new battery pack compatible with their older models; we all know it is simple as producing a laptop battery for older laptops. What do you guys think?
@DalasEVRepair

They are probably worried that cheap replacement packs would go straight to stationary storage, so best to simply don't offer it. Also new car sales would be affected.

The battery heats up after that giving some range back, but I usually try to borrow a petrol car in cold weather and obviously for all longer trips.

So , I was thinking , what would happen if you installed a 62 KW battery into a 2011 Leaf? Could the area in the trunk where the original electronics for the battery sat be turned into a way to blow air into and out of the rear battery module for cooling? The Toyota Prius did something similar. It had an air intake in the cabin area of the rear seat. The first gen Prius used air to cool their battery. If 2 or 3 inch flexible hoses could be cut into the top of the rear of the battery pack, they could be fed up into the body behind the rear seat. A fan with an air filter could take air from inside the back area of the car on one side send it through the battery pack and exhaust it back into the car on the other side or possibly out into the inner fender or body on the other side. It might be possible to install a kind of blend air damper. This is all just a thought. I know there are other factors to deal with but the first gen leaf had that hump all the way across behind the rear seat when newer vehicles didn't.

I realise this is an old video, so you may not reply, but thanks for all your work. As I am just at the start of an EV conversion using Resolve-EV with a 24kWh Leaf, do you have any thoughts on using Chinese new alternatives for 62kWh battery packs? Finding Leaf’s is not easy and I’d like longer range, but I lack confidence in sending so much money for something it is hard to know much detail about.

If you use chinese cells, might be best to skip the Resolve EV and get another BMS for the cells. It is not easy to get the chinese cells to have correct control with the LEAF BMS. Look into the zombieverter project?

@@DalasEVRepair thanks for the response! I’m starting simple to make sure I succeed! Resolve-EV seemed ideal for me for that reason, but inevitably there are compromises. Maybe project 2 will be a bit more in depth and offer more flexibility. As I continued to bounce around the internet, I saw a recent post from Muxsan, suggesting they are imminently offering new batteries for Leafs, so will see where that goes. BTW- You are partly responsible for the growing number of vehicles on our driveway! Started with old VW T2. Then bought v low mileage 2014 Leaf for cheap, just to learn and feel what they’re like, and to see where it might lead me. Then bought a very broken VW T2 and more broken 2015 Leaf to practice merging them together. If it all works out I then migrate the electrification over to my current VW T2. Has anyone investigated putting better air cooling on the Nissan leaf battery? I’ve read of ducted air con to the battery making improvement. Edit : found a video elsewhere showing 3D printed duct & hose to connect air conducting dash vent outlet to the battery isolator on floor at back seat. Unfortunately this made little noticeable difference as it was blowing air over the sealed battery pack housing, not through it. I’m thinking dry non humid air blown through the sealed battery pack _might_ make a noticeable difference if the battery-air heat exchange does not leave hotspots. Would be a very experimental process to test.

Dala (or anyone), In your calculations, does it cost less to buy a ZE0 leaf and upgrade it to 62 kwh, or to just buy a Leaf+ (new or used) with the 62 kwh battery from the factory?

Hello Dala I have two questions: 1.do the inverter handle the load and driving 400 km continuously without stoping ?? 2.do the battery needs cooling since the the old battery doesn’t have a lot of load but now if you drive high range there might be load and need cooling in summer?? Thanks in advance
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair 4 ай бұрын
1. Yes 2. No cooling needed. It wouldn't hurt to have cooling, but it works without!

As a mechanical novice I just want to clarify something. Using the mounts you showed, a 62kwh battery pack attached directly to a MK1 Leaf, and all the electrics and electronics were just plug and play. Is this correct? And from the point of having the battery removed, this took you just a single day??

Hi, I bought a new 62kw Leaf 12 months ago, it now has 25,000 kilometers & I only ever got 350/360 kilometer range per full charge, nowhere near 440 kilometers. Also because it is now 0 degrees in Ireland my range is showing only 280 kilometers when 100% charged.
