I was an I/O engine boater and it is crucial to drain and add anti freezer to the inboard engine. Are you saying that outboard engines are self draining and the engine head and now anti freeze is necessary? Just blast the water stream port tube to clear the water from it? I did not know that.

Kris, my tiny electric motor hasn't frozen up on me yet. But I could use some advice on how to keep the camera from freezing and dying while I'm videoing! :-) Great tip my friend! When I get an outboard, I'll remember this!

+Juanelo1946 the best advice that I can give you my friend, is move out here to the desert. Your camera will NEVER freeze, although it will overheat in the summer months.

What about for a little tiny Johnson 4hp motor is that okay to bring into cold water? It’s pretty old but in mint condition

are you blowing the water from the hose to the inside of the engine?
@timengland36498 жыл бұрын
I'm sry but I have to disagree. Your method is forcing water back into the jacket which can cause freezing where don't want it the most. You would be better served by disconnecting the line from the motor and using the air dust blowing the water out of the line.
@ArynBeltran8 жыл бұрын
Where would you put the nozzle into, to blow the lines out? I thought the same thing, but where would you blow them out at?
@patrickfinnegan32097 жыл бұрын
The hose goes from the motor to the hole in the side of the motor housing (where the man in this video shot the air into). You should be able to pull the tubing off of the motor fairly easily, there may be a hose clamp or spring clamp you may need to remove, but nothing too crazy. Furthermore, if your not planning on running your motor during the winter months, this little bit left in the tubing should not matter, if does freeze it wont expand enough to damage the tube or motor. If you do want to fire your engine up, you'll need to make sure that it is not "plugged" with ice, so you should take the tube off the motor and blow the water out of the side of the housing.
@patrickfinnegan32097 жыл бұрын
I'd also look into taking that loop out of the tubing, so the water just completely drains out when the motor is lowered, the first step in the video.

I agree with Tim England. Blowing water back into the power head is probably not the ideal thing to do. Also, the poster of this video incorrectly thinks that the telltale, a.k.a. pisser is designed to move water around the power head. The telltale should be thought of more as a check valve or weep hole that gives visual confirmation that the water impeller is pressurizing and supplying the power head with fresh cool water. One can also quickly determine if the water jacket has frozen if the telltale stops pissing in freezing conditions. The outboard will sufficiently clear water from the jacket if the owner drops the outboard down to allow the engine to drain, and the heat from the power head will keep the water in liquid form long enough for gravity to do its job.

Most engines have a drain plug in the block to drain the block of any water trapped in there. easier to take that out and be sure. Also your water pump can hold water as well.
@fdyhdfhy4 жыл бұрын
How does the water pump hold water? Gravity would make the water go out the same way it came in. Did you think before you posted lol? A drain plug in the block???? What engine are you talking about here lmao???
@ratdog30554 жыл бұрын
@@fdyhdfhy not always, most water pumps are located near the bottom of the engine (I'm talking I/O and inboards here). The hose rise above the pump negating the gravitational effect.
