Adam absolutely nailed it with the suicide storyline. I've thought the same from the very first time I watched the movie. Most people focus on the acceptance of family and whatnot, but the story is about overcoming depression. Joy says the following lines in the movie... "it's all just a pointless, swirling bucket of horsesh!t" “I'm Tired. I Don't Want To Hurt Anymore And For Some Reason When I'm With You, It Just Hurts The Both Of Us.” “Do You Know Why I Actually Built The Bagel? It Wasn't To Destroy Everything. It Was To Destroy Myself.” “Why Not Go Somewhere Where Your Daughter Is More Than Just This?” "You're feeling a good thing, you got your hopes up. I'm here to save you some time. Eventually, that all just goes away."
@KBRoller2 сағат бұрын
There are many layered themes in this film. I find that people who haven't experienced suicidal thoughts tend to miss it in this movie... which is astounding to me, because it seems so explicit about those themes.
@evienicksСағат бұрын
I think most people end up discussing the philosophical underpinnings of the depression-in this case, nihilism-since the movie is so clearly a movie of ideas, but it's also just as clearly an emotional family melodrama. You are right that talking explicitly about the suicidality matters a lot!
@mitchellhp59 минут бұрын
Yes! I’d been in the middle of one of my depressed moods for a while when I saw this. Everything about Joy/Jobu’s story hit me so hard, and I was basically sobbing the whole movie. I love watching analyses & reactions for this movie b/c every person gives me new insight into it. Hoping to one day to be able my nihilsm from Jobu’s “nothing matters so I don’t matter” to Waymond’s “if nothing matters, then every possibility is available.” Still working on that

And they were really riding that line. With a concept like this, just one small step away from absurdity or closer to absurdity would have made it a complete failure of a film. They got it exactly right.

I love this movie so much. As someone with strained family relationships, and a verrry long history depression, it punched me right in the gut, and changed my perspective on a lot of things. I still cry every time I see it lol. You asked where you know the actress who plays Joy from, my guess is from Shang Chi. She played the friend that Shawn and Katie are at the bar with. And one of the butt-plug warriors played the masked master who trained Shawn.

The visual symbolism in this movie is so on point. Everything from Evelyn's hair gradually getting more and more put together to the googly-eyes being the inverted form of the bagel. There is so much here that is so well put together. It deserved every oscar it got and a few more besides.

I absolutely love this movie. This movie is addressing nihilism, cynicism, existentialism, and absurdism. That our lives are ultimately futile and without higher purpose. However, knowing that nothing matters should be the ultimate relief - the peace you learn should be that if life is meaningless, then you are absolutely free to create meaning. Embrace the uncertainty, rebel against the cynics. It doesn't matter why. You're here now and you don't have to justify it to anyone or any higher 'power'. It doesn't matter, the results are always the same. So that if nothing you do matters then the only thing that matters is what you do. That the meaning of life is to give life meaning. Everything is made up and the points don't matter.

An absolutely phenomenal film... I cried multiple times in the theater the first time I saw it. Easily in my top 5 favorites all time. Just a reminder... Academy Awards for: Best Picture Best Directing Best Editing Best Original Screenplay Best Actor - Ke Huy Quan Best Actress - Michelle Yeoh Best Supporting Actress - Jamie Lee Curtis And is currently considered the most awarded film of all time.
@dashkatae3 сағат бұрын
You might want to rephrase your last statement cause it makes it seem like you're talking about just the Academy Awards which it won 7 and not for the entire industry of awards.
@axr7149Сағат бұрын
Here is a unique fun fact: When you count just the major, "above-the-line" categories (screenplay, acting, directing, and picture), this film holds the record for most wins across these specific categories EVER (6 of its 7 wins are in these specific categories, with Editing being the only technical win). An argument could be made for GOING MY WAY (1944) tying this record as well, although one of its wins was in the now discontinued category of Best Story. It is also one of only 3 movies to win 3 acting Oscars (after A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951) and NETWORK (1976)) but the only one of the bunch to also win Picture. Interestingly, all 3 movies won Actress and Supporting Actress.

This movie is so damn fantastic! And this movie made me bawl like a baby. Coming out to my family was really tough. I love this film! Honestly, I hadn't cried that much watching a movie since Coco. And yes, I love you guys too, Jay and Adam! 💖

I think everyone got something different from this movie. Personally it was really great at capturing how much my momma and I love each other, but fight constantly. We couldn’t live without each other, even if it’s hard sometimes. And, because I suffer from depression, the part where waymond says that looking for the positive is how he “fights” really struck a cord with me. The worst stuff that could ever happen to me already happened… I’m not scared of anything… but the constant sadness is crippling. So the biggest fight I have IS thinking positively.

Weird, I don't know why KZbin deleted my comment... I'll try reposting it. This is my favorite live-action movie of all time, and as usual, I'm a mix of Adam and Jay. I also cry every time I see it, especially when Waymond gives his "we have to be kind, especially when we don't know what's going on" speech. This should never have worked, on paper, but the execution is so damn good that it just *does.* It's the closest thing I've ever seen to a perfect film. As someone else said, this isn't an example of Chekov's gun, it's an example of Chekov's entire Texas wedding. And the themes and symbolism work on so many levels! All the parallels and contrasts... The bagel symbolizes nihilism, while Evelyn symbolizes existentialism. But also, the bagel symbolizes depression, with Joy/Jobu being suicidal -- Adam definitely nailed that. Remember the line "it destroys more than just light and matter"? And then later, Jobu says she made the bagel "to destroy myself." The bagel was made to destroy Joy... to destroy joy. It *is* depression made concrete. And then of course you've got Joy's depression paralleling Evelyn's anxiety/ADHD (the writers said she was meant to have ADHD, confirmed). You've got the contrast between Evelyn being the cynical protagonist, but Waymond being the empathetic hero who actually saves the day. The parallel between generational trauma between Evelyn and Gong Gong, and then between Evelyn and Joy. In one universe, Evelyn and Diedre are enemies, but in another, they're lovers, two sides of the same coin when you learn to "fight with kindness". Everything matters because nothing does. Literally everything is so perfectly crafted about this. My only complaint is that Jamie Lee Curtis won the award for best supporting actress. She's great, don't get me wrong, but Stephanie Hsu was absolutely robbed of that. My favorite animated films are the Spider-Verse series, and I could always ask for more of those. But EEAAO? It's a one-and-done, I don't want or need a sequel, it's as perfect as-is as it could be. A sequel would *only* diminish its importance.

I don't wanna hog the comments but two more things I have to say about this film: 1. I will never stop laughing at the fact that the editor for this film won an Oscar... and in his acceptance speech, the first thing he said was "Hey! Thanks!... This is crazy... This is only my second film!" 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂ like, dude... stfu if you wanna make it outta that building alive 🤣🤣🤣 2. The last real solid laugh I got out of my father before he passed was describing the scene with Jenny Slate using her dog as nunchucks. Idk why that in particular cracked him up so much but I can't watch this film without remembering that. Such a silly ridiculous thing. But given the subject matter of the film + the kind of humor my father enjoyed, it somehow feels appropriate
