So, this season covers the first 45ish episodes of the anime, and around the first 95 chapters of the manga. It is called the East Blue Saga, the section of the story before they enter the grand line. Remember, the show is over 1000 episodes, this is LITERALLY just the prologue! Chapter 100 of the manga is literally titled: "The Legend Has Begun". Other than our first 5 crew members, we do get a few more here and there sprinkled throughout the story, remember, in episode 1 Luffy mentions that he wants to get about 10 members!

The town they go to at the end of the saga (the place we saw Roger executed) is literally called Loguetown and referred to as "The Town of the Beginning and the End" because it represents the prologue and epilogue of the pirate king as well as the capstone of One Piece's prologue. I know I miss a lot of the Japanese wordplay but it's wild to me how good Oda is even at English wordplay.

The entire season 1 is set up to something like 90 chapters/episodes. It would've been 100 if the Louge Town story was included to conclude the East Blue saga, but the showrunner decided to leave that for the season 2 entry, just before they set out for the Grand Line

Fun fact. Arlong IS bigger in the manga/anime. He's nearly twice Luffy's height and size. This point in season 01 of the OP Live Action... it's about 90 chapters which is 40 episodes. And the crew is half finished. Luffy said at the beginning he wanted "10 men"

In regards to swimming the answer is no. It is one of my few criticisms of the show that is does a bad job of explaining this. We are told that eating a devil fruit makes mother sea turns her back on you but it is not fully explained what this means. There are 2 effects. 1. You lose your powers when in sea water but also 2. You lose the ability to swim. I have seen a few reactors not get this and it is not there fault

I have seen multiple reactions, there is always someone in the comments explaining that devil fruit eaters lose their ability to swim. What Makino said in episode 2 is more complicated than simply saying "Once you eat a devil fruit, you lose the ability to swim." For trying to be creative, the writers made it more confusing to first time viewers.

The live action gets to around chapter 100 (the manga is currently at around 1100 chapters), and this covers the majority of the East Blue saga which (as you picked up on) is pretty much the prologue for the rest of the series. They’ve gathered up the core crew so they have enough people to sail the ship and not get lost (thank you Nami). They do occasionally get more crew members who also occupy important roles on the ship, but it isn’t every island like in this saga. It’s funny because to this day readers are still trying to guess who might become a new member of the crew and there’s always a checklist they have to fill: do they have an emotional backstory?, do they have a dream they can accomplish by joining?, and can they serve a role on the crew? 😂 There was a recent case where someone was extremely close to joining but then pulled out last moment and it really felt like the author was trolling us.

And it's not a prologue in "tv show prologue" or "establishing season of an anime" sense, because one piece is not structured like a tv show, but like a book. So it has the prologue, the first act, the middle point, the second act and is currently entering/already in the third act. I see a lot of people trying to explain devil fruits but I'll use this comparation to make it easer to understand, basically, if a devil fruit eater falls to water, their body experiments something like extreme exhaustion, they can still move and they don't loose the physical abilities the devil fruit gives them, luffy's body will still have the properties of rubber underwater but he won't be able to stretch himself due to this exhaustion, once you eat a devil there's nothing that can take away that power it become a part of your body, that said, yes, even if luffy's unconscious, someone could still grab his arms and stretch him far away, same underwater

If we're looking at the anime, this season only gets to episode 50! Baring in mind its past episode 1100 now, it would take 20 years and an ever growing budget to fully cover the anime. Fortunately, One Piece is also notorious for the amount of anime filler added to pad it out (pointless, non-cannon arcs, full episodes that are 90% flashback, you name it). I think they could do it in ten seasons, but it'll cost a bomb, and they're gonna have to play loose with the season length. I'm up to episode 800 and it would already take the GDP of a small country just to finance the FX.

"Does the clown head join the crew?" I wish! Buggy is a rival to Luffy. He has his own crew, and surprisingly his encounter with Luffy motivates him to get off his butt. Remember, Buggy is actually the same age as Shanks, and has been procrastinating his destiny. Now that Buggy is engaged, he has been keeping pace with the Straw Hats the whole way, despite kind of being an idiot in his own right. Buggy's crew at this moment is on par with the Straw Hats, if not stronger, except that Buggy himself is nowhere near as strong as Luffy. Not going to name any names (spoilers), but Buggy's current first mate is actually stronger than Zoro, proven fact. All this said, the most amazing storylines seem to happen when Luffy fights on the same side as his closest rivals, especially Buggy.
