Faith is a wonderful thing if it helps you face questions without answers, but a dangerous thing if it keeps you from looking for answers or even asking questions. I feel thats how The Doctor feels about it too.

It's the "first season" so that they can put it on D+, not because they were like "we need to be #1" but because the streaming rights for the other New Who seasons are elsewhere
@ClintBandito

They'd still call it 1 again even if they had the others, because 13 or even 39 series/seasons is intimidating and they want audiences to comfortably jump on board. On BBC iPlayer in the UK it's Season 1 of Doctor Who (2023-) with all of Doctor Who (2005-2022) & Doctor Who (1963-1989) being available. It's a marketing tactic to make it feel accessible.

So yes, this version of the military was introduced in Moffat's Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone episodes, and was seen throughout his run. It's essentially the Anglican Church going full military in the 51st Century (known as the Church of the Papel Mainframe). The faith commentary sits better with me after a second watch. We know that the Doctor isn't opposed to faith overall (Eleven was thrilled when the woman in The God Complex was Muslim), but in times of stress, anger, or grief, it's easy to lash out at the concept. I saw this on another video and have really loved it - Faith and reason are like shoes. It's easier to run with both than it is one. Even if your faith isn't religious, there are things you can't always see that you end up having to put your trust in, like the Doctor trusting that the AI Dad would come through.

@@darkphoenix6807 If your faith is blind, you're doing it wrong, IMHO. You have to see and accept what's visible, while also accepting that there are some things you can't see. I don't think Villengard will be an ongoing thing, because its not a new thing we already know how it ends. In The Doctor Dances (Moffat's first story) Captain Jack says his blaster is from the weaponyards of Villengard, which blew up. The 9th Doctor implies he was responsible for that and says there is a banana grove there now. A War Doctor comic actually showed those events. In Twice Upon A Time (Moffat's last episode) the 12th and 1st Doctors actually visited the ruins of Villengard to find Rusty, the rogue Dalek.

Oh, man, I *hope* Brennan watches Who, because this is absolutely his bread, butter, and BBEG. This was such a great episode; loved the message, loved the writing, loved the concept, loved the acting. Ruby's tearful "who is my next of kin?" got me choked up, and the Doctor's pure venom during his exchange with Mundy was beautiful! (The whole, "do you get-get-get it?" and the conversation that followed... *chef's kiss* ) And that's how it always works: people with faith have blind faith for things they like, but when it's something they don't want to hear, *that* is when faith is suddenly no longer enough and proof to their standards is required. "We're fighting evil people for freedom and God? Sure, let's go in guns and bombs blazing without question! Oh, you want us to save you, you non-believer? I need proof of a reason I should!" Next time there's a tragedy and someone says "thoughts and prayers" without actually helping, I'm sending them this and wishing upon them many sharp scratches.

So I was already a sobbing mess, watching this beautiful (and absolutely scathing) episode with such wonderful fatherhood themes mixed in with incendiary social commentary screeds, and then they had to go and say “fish fingers and custard.” 😭😭😭

I believe the re numbering of season back to 1 was down to rights, if it was a continuation then distribution could be tied to old contract. This is a clean break. The argument to say references the old shows means it should be 14 is equally floored because 2005 referenced the 1963 series, so it should be series 40 (or whatever).
@swiftlymurmurs
@swiftlymurmurs 4 ай бұрын
It's like how Nickelodeon shows kept starting over under a new name (Suite Life of Z & C -> Suite Life On Deck) after season 3, because longer running shows got more rights, and if it had a new name it was technically a whole new show. Sometimes studios just pull shenanigans due to contractual technicalities and it has little to do with the actual product

Old Who started in 1963, and has 26 series/seasons through 1989 with the 7th Doctor. The 2005 series is the Moffat Who, starts with Series/Season 1 instead of Series/Season 27, and has 13 seasons, taking it to Season 39. This is the Disney Who, so they're starting with Series/Season 1, again, and The Doctor is referencing Old Who, as well as Moffat Who, rather than Series/Season 14/40. That's the way I figure it.😁

The "Season 1" is a legal thing to cover both Disney and The BBC's asses so they could keep making Doctor Who. Legally, (HBO) Max has the exclusive streaming right for NuWho and any future seasons (Remember, THEY were gonna be The BBC's co-funding partners until that part of the plan got Zaslaved) for a long ass time from now. In order to make more Who and not get sued into oblivion, this had to be a legally distinct third Doctor Who TV show with a first season and everything.

MAX didn't have rights to future seasons just the past. Disney+ has the rights with a partnership with the BBC. BBC and Bad Wolf retained full rights to all Who and sold current and future streaming to Disney. Disney is also putting some money into the show.

What I found interesting about that was that the ambulance/algorithm can clearly identify her as the same Ruby Sunday who was born/adopted over 3,000 years ago (those must be some pretty exhaustive DNA records they've got stored!), but then it starts to glitch when trying to identify her next-of-kin. Some folks are assuming that's because her birth-mother is unknown... but legally, next-of-kin doesn't work like that. But consider: From Ruby's adopted mother - who is legally her next-of-kin in the present, and who as far as we know has no other children - the system has to trace through roughly (3000 / 25) = 120 generations of her subsequent family tree, and try to figure out which one of however-many surviving relations is the closest to Ruby. That's probably a bit of a deeper and broader tree-walk than the system was ever designed to handle! =:o}

This episode was somewhat necessary to prove that the first two episodes wasn't a completely new tone of the show. Nothing against the first two episodes, but there could be a segment of fandom that would look at those episodes and argue that it's Disneyfication of Doctor Who, this basically brings the show back to "standards". I've liked all three episodes, I do think that the solutions for pretty much all three episodes has been lazy/unearned to be honest, but the story build up on all has been enjoyable.
@hanonhold
@hanonhold 3 ай бұрын
But then Rose, New Earth, and whatever the adipose episode was called are also silly and campy (personally not to my taste) so the whole "Disneyfication" criticism is BS imo. People just have nostalgia goggles for the first few seasons of new who. Aside from Midnight, Turn Left and the Waters of Mars most of his episodes weren't highly acclaimed in the fandom anyway.

@@hanonhold don't get me wrong, I fully agree with you that the "Disneyfication" argument is utter bs, same with woke arguments etc... I was just pointing out that after two relatively silly episodes to start the series (three if you count the singing goblin episode) that a grounded episode was a reminder that this is Doctor Who and we change genres episode to episode. I have liked all the episodes so far, I have not liked the endings/solutions to any of them (the next episode has a satisfactory ending that is earned though)

I thought 73 yards was good. Perhaps it doesn't totally hold up to scrutiny but I thought the take on folk horror was interesting and shows RTD isn't afraid to experiment. I just wish he'd stick to more if that and less of the farting and singing...
