The sequential gearbox looks very familiar to a motorcycle rider! Can remember the revelation of shifting under wide open throttle when ignition cut-outs were first implemented. Less work for the rider and better lap times. When I rented a german car with a dual clutch for the first time I was like Whaat! how is it shifting so fast, even faster than sequential. I actually have footage of a drag bike transmission I may post soon. For that matter motorcycle transmissions are sequential as well. Face plating is not new and has been around in auto racing transmissions into the 50's and nobody is claiming it's a new technology. However, what is new is perhaps how it's implemented and the ability to machine drums and profiles with extreme accuracy.

There are many reasons for a floating input shaft, Aimee of which are mentioned here. But when it comes to bell housing misalignment they forgot something. If the main bearing bore has to be tried so the crankshaft runs straight through the engine block the machinest might need to tak material off of both the main caps and block saddles. It would be preferable if just the main caps get remachined, but not always possible. There are two reasons for this. If you are converting the block to four bolt main caps, the block might need to be machined at the mating surface for the caps to sit correctly, and they may have to mill down the block to accept the caps. The other reason is that the crankshaft bores may not have been machined properly. Years ago one of the cars magazines took a Chevy 305 and a Ford 302 and built them with the same specs as each other to see which engine made more power. The Chevy had major problem as it came from the factory. The main bore for the crankshaft was going through the block sideway and at an upward angle. So the machine shop they were using had to cut down the main caps and the bearing saddle to get the crankshaft bore straight from front to back and level. Then the cylinders didn't line up with the crank so they had to be corrected. But the change in the crankshaft location would also change where the pilot bearing was located and wouldn't line up properly with the bell housing. So the transmission's input shaft would have been push to one side or another or too high or too low. A floating input shaft like these would allow the transmission to live much longer under stress along with side loading.
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
When we talk of bell housing misalignment we are talking about the register bore of the bell not being on center as well as perpendicular with the crank center line and the block face. I'm well aware of how line boring and line honing effect this. You can bet most of these pros are aware of it as well. Since it is very common for after market bells to be out as much as .030 , bells are always dialed in. Keep in mind these transmissions are going into cup cars and I'm sure they made the effort to dial the mating bell housings and I think a few Nascar engine builders know how to align bore a block properly. That being said, the take away here seems to be chassis and housing flex adding to slight misalignment and edge loading of the main drive.

It has a 10 bolt #2 Bellhousing that bolts the 5 bolt Chevy engine pattern on the back of the engine.. The starter even bolts to the bell housing not to the block of the truck as the flywheel is much larger.. It has a traction lock system that locks all 6 wheels together when you are in mud or almost stuck .. with all 6 wheels locked is does not get so much wheel hop from spinning.. The traction lock system uses about 700 PSI brake fluid pressure.. next to the spider gears is a set of clutches like in an automatic transmission fiver discs and metal plates and the power divider gets locks out by sliding a toothed dog into a set of teeth ..that lock out the torque proportioned differential ..

Man I have some real disdain for Getrag. they stopped making the Supra trans (233) and they never offered aftermarket gear sets at any point in time so now beat up abused boxes go for a premium. Even with all the advancement in the 2JZ drag racing and drift scenes no love from Getrag. And now the world record fastest 6 speed H pattern 1/4 mile drag car is a Supra with a T56 Magnum with dog engagement and stock gear set.
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
Companies are under no obligation to make aftermarket gearsets. Just replacement gears. They are also not have any obligation to make transmissions not for their intended use. Meaning if the trans is designed to handle 300 HP there is no guarantee it will work in a 500 HP application. Your Tremec statement is misleading be because stock gearsets didn't come with dog rings. Aftermarket gearsets from PPG, GForce and Liberty's do or have been modified for Performance use.

Clutchless creates wear and tear so its not practical. You can always go with a manuakly shifted auto trans. New T56 and TKX do a pretty good job as a full synchro bix with an OD

Wow.. So the dual clutch trans are built like manuals.... They just have actuators that shift for you- Interesting. I can see why a lot of cars are using those. If they could just build the clutches on a 90 degree gear so they stick out to the side--- where you could easily pull a side cover off and change the clutches when you needed to- without having to remove the trans at all--- then it would be a no brainer to put them in Everything.... Since it would be so easy to swap the clutches that way; because I can't see them lasting all that long if you're throwing 2500hp at them. lol .... Very cool video. thanks

Would there be a way to add one of these or any 4/5 speed transmission to my 94 ford E150 van?? I can’t stand power robbing auto transmissions.
@Russell_and_Rosko4 жыл бұрын
I have a 93 e150 with the 351w and e4od with the same interest. I’m hoping for 18-20 mpg with more power (lose the clutch fan, beef up your electrical and run electric fans = +10-15hp.) You have the roller block if you’ve got a ‘94 351w which is a great foundation. It looks like we’ll need: Zf5 transmission from f series (there are rebuilt zf5’s on eBay for $900) Clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, TOB Clutch pedal assembly from manual f series obs, modify the brake pedal (I plan to cut mine down and move it closer to the throttle). Shape that wheel well that impedes the clutch pedal area. Slave cylinder (you’ll need to bend up your own clutch slave line) Ecu from manual truck for your engine size Driveshaft may have to be custom Modify your floor and bend up your own shifter Your stock radiator has a trans cooler in it, I would suggest swapping to a new unit for a manual. Your auto trans support will need to be modified or you’ll need to fab one up (not very difficult). I may have missed something, but with a set of 4.10’s in the rear end, it will “feel” like the van has 40-50 more lbs ft tq. A stroker attached to a zf5 would make the van fun to drive. I haven’t weighed mine, but empty I’m guessing just under 6k lbs.

So what new in manual transmission technology in 2020? Posted from “ch3no2killz”, they are using 50 year old motorcycle transmission parts, like shift dogs, shift drum w/rotary cam shifting. What the hell is next? Needle bearings on the connecting rods? Shiny, new alloys, floating input shafts... Still used everyday during the 60’s up, except in motorcycles. The only difference I see is a 7 degree cut angle on the shift dogs to keep high HP engines from popping out of gear. What’s old is new again. So much to say about synchro’s, single cone brass, dual cone friction and lets not forget the Porsche “Balk Rings”! What, never heard of them? ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
I guess you skipped over the DCT section... Gears are gears. Dog rings are dog rings. It how you use these designs to produce better more efficient transmissions. Methods of machining change, accuracy changes, strength of alloys, overall assembly weight.. it all changes as metallurgy and machine quality get more advanced. Accuracy of heat treat is better than the 60's. Why does a Top Fuel ring and pinion last 50 times longer with fuel cars producing 10K HP compared to dragsters with less HP in the 70's? Its still a ring and pinion. Current DCT transmissions would have been impossible to implement because we didn't have ecu systems with high speed processors and data streams. FYI a baulk is just another term for a synchro ring, or block ring.
@deankay44344 жыл бұрын
I am not disappointed in anything I saw and enjoyed the entire video. I was just shocked to “See” old school technology used. Sure alloys have changed, helical cut gears produce lateral thrust and may employ a pre-tensioner gear if noisy. As far as controls, sure, with inputs from VSS, RPM, TPS, various methods from solenoids, hydraulic multi disc clutch packs can in reality/theoretically could aid or complete the entire shifting. These are specialty designed for racing, meeting certain bracket requirements while some are on the dealers show floor now. Weight, complexity, cost, internal frictional losses are all factors that drive the design. I have repaired imports, domestics, transfer cases and automatics going back to two pump power glides I build for the neighbor. Not much I have not seen. By the way, the Porsche “Balk Ring” is a split two piece synchro ring, held in place with a round spring wire and when the shift hub goes over it, pinched onto the gear to speed or slow it down. I have two in vehicles that parts have become pricy but made in 1969. I started making money at home on motorcycles at age 10, from electrical, carbs and bent shift forks. Enough to trade and buy a newer on since my first bike at 8. Still got the photos of the mess. I had to draw the parts layout upon disassembly regardless as I lived on a farm 27 miles from a city that sold parts. Never filled out paperwork or had a resume for the first seven companies I work for and never went to a trade school. They didn’t even have shop in high school. So lucky to have inherited my Grandfathers brain that allowed him to graduate with an electrical engineering degree in 32. ASE Master Tech since 1978, L1 at 100 questions correct first try, but called NIASE in a the 70’s.

That's because a bike doesn't make much torque even if built to the extreme it wont make much torque until much later in the RPM range plus the light weight of bike compared to a car significantly lowers shock load. whats new is the machining processes and materials also those slight angle changes are due to years of experience plus new modeling software and development of new tooling that in conjunction with better electronics and oil pump mechanisms have made it possible for these designs to truly handle the abuse of modern race motors while improving certain qualities of life such as shift effort, feel and speed. You're analogy is a bit funny, because you can say the same thing about piston engines (Old tech from a long time ago) but that doesn't stop us from making little tweaks that eventually made that old design become more efficient and deliver a ton of power reliably for thousands of miles even on a daily driven vehicle without much qualms. Don't forget about rotary sensors, potentiometers, are now much more accurate since ECU's sample rates have greatly increased allowing for almost infinite real time adjustments at blinding speeds. motorcycles have just started getting this kind of technology but it has been in development for cars since the 80's (true closed loop systems that is)

Will any of these gearboxes apply to electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles do not need a transmission
@MrDelsoleg114 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideoyou're correct in that they don't need one, but they do benefit greatly from having multiple gears as shown in the taycan turbo s. It gives better conversion efficiency which equates to a bit more range over a single gear. They can also be used with smaller battery's to give equal range to one with a bigger battery and 1 speed gearbox. Being able to get to a higher top speed is also a plus with having multiple gears.

Too bad jasper didnt put that kinda care and quality control in the engines they rebuild because theyre trash

There's no point in running a dual clutch transmission. An automatic is the same thing wet clutched. I think a zf 8hp is probably lighter than a dct?
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
You can't beat a dct trans when it comes to faster shifts and less HP losses. Perhaps that is why Porshe and Audi started using them. Best of both worlds

@@GearBoxVideo Another advantage of the DCT is the total freedom in gearing. In the ZF 8HP the plantary gear sets are shared across ratios, giving much less desirable jumps in ratios between gears compared to a DCT. BTW thanks for the video, really interesting as usual!
