I have replaced the cork faced clutch disc in a 50 hudson. It ran in a special oil so the pressure plate flywheel were sealed. the ONLY reason I had to change the disc was I tore out the center where the impact absorbing springs were. that clutch really worked nice and if not mistreated(no teen age driver) I bet they all lasted forever. never saw anything like that again.

Love the vid's paul,, But i just so happen to be in the crowd that dont think to much of the weights on the diaphragm clutches,,, Every time I get a hotrod in the shop i make it a point to run it up on the lift and watch inside the bell housing,, always the weights are off to one side while running and revving,, Would use a timing light for the rev up part.
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
If that would be the case, you'd have a nasty vibration. Never had any issue with them. The weights do work. Often times other imbalances will cause the weights to be off.
@tombogan83265 жыл бұрын
A question regarding dual/triple disc clutches vs single- It seems that some release issues can be related to the multiple disc versions not letting go. Is it also likely that a multi-disc will have considerably MORE mass to change input speed on the input shaft? That would make it harder for the synchronizer to work. It seems that the most IDEAL set up would be a single disc that is as small/lightweight that will still hold up to the torque/power requirements. This would shift easier due to less rotational mass? Thoughts?
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
Leveraged inertia. 20 lbs spinning outboard 10 inches has a different effect than 20 lbs spinning centered.
@blow0me4 жыл бұрын
moment of inertia, hence why most multi plate clutches are smaller diameter. But larger diameter offers the user more feel/control over engagement. Everything is a compromise
@p0intdk5 жыл бұрын
I have a few questions that you maybe could put into your next video, if you are running a real race transmission, like a straigt-cut dogbox can you just use a single plate clutch or do you have to use some sort of multi-plate clutch setup?

Great video again!!! At 24 minutes, the ATS corvette clutch, do you are anybody have any info upon proper break-in methods for such an assembly. Heck, for any multi-pack-clutch for that matter? Just curious. I have heard several methods, like, install the new unit, and break it in how you intend to race it, meaning, no break-in, as per street driven and occasional weekends at the face track... and of course a plethora of methods for daily driven clutches, each having a time frame of mileage before one can assume it is seated well into its own grooves.... Top fuel drag clutches is a whole other mindset of theories, which do not apply to my question, as I do not have a top fuel, lol, do you think I'm made of money, lol... Some of those clutches cost more then my entire rig, lol... Anyhow, another great video, and again, I learned several things... Thank you for taking the time to share this video, and all the expenses to go to this event, thank you. Dru
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
Each manufacturer usually specifies their own break in procedure. Alot has to do with the surface finish of the flywheel and pressure plate. Some companies will purposely put what appears to be vinyl record raised grooves in the pressure plate to seat the disc faster.
@drubradley88215 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo oh, no way, that just means I am an idiot, I always thought that those rough lathe lines were just crappy machining, as if they were in a hurry.. But that makes so much sense, to allow the peaks to wear in, or down, for the seating purposes, and faster as well... That makes so much sense... Thank you!!! Dru

LOL, People been pushing those dual friction clutches for years. One side is organic an the other side is full metallic. An attempt to make an aggressive clutch that engages like a street clutch. RESULT: The first time you drop the hammer with big slicks and prepped asphalt WILL shear off all the rivets on the organic side and it will kill the pressure plate (excuse me...clutch cover) or flywheel contact service. (Been there done that)
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
I have sold many dual friction clutches from various manufacturers. I can honestly say with Centerforce which we have sold close to 1000 sets, I have never seen an issue. Some have full metallic pucks, others kevler. What I can tell you is that they do wear faster because the puck side as less surface area. I don't like them for street applications because they can chatter.
@donogoobo99925 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo Interesting that you replied. The first metallic/organic disk I used was a Centerforce. Granted, I was using it way out of it's class, but it was a 610 bigblock, 65 mustang Gasser, 9" rear/4.30 gear. slicks had a 14" wide contact area on a 12" wheel. In just a test launch before leaving for the track, the car moved about 2 feet, then engine was on rev limiter. I thought "driveshaft" as it was so sudden. On disassembly, it was the flywheel side friction pulled loose in one piece. I replaced it with a 3 finger ceramic button disk which worked flawlessly for years, just a flywheel resurface and a couple of B&B covers. Memory fails me as to part number, but Centerforce said it was their highest rated street clutch (at that time)

I have a low rpm chatter coming through my centerforce clutch that feels like the weights contactibg the throwout bearing...or am i insane?
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
Chatter isn't caused by the weights. People are quick to blame the weights for any abnormal clutch operation they get. Basically weights aren't even close to the release bearing. Any flywheel balance issue can make the weights chatter. People cut wheels often, buy cheap flywheels and I see this happen often. Alloy wheels often times can cause low rpm noise as well. See my explanation in my clutch video.

I have avoided the concentric clutch throwout/slave cylinder like the plague because they fail from heat so you have to tear apart the whole assembly to get the transmission out and change it. My question is. Is there such a thing as a concentric slave cylinder/throwout bearing that will actually stand up for 20+years inside that hot bell housing?
@ColtaineCrows5 жыл бұрын
I only know of one, the one that came in 1997-2000 Volvo V70's with the 2.5D(D5252T, modified from the VAG 2.5TDI) and probably the S80 of similar years. Mind the only one I know of that has had much use has had it replaced because the dual mass flywheel started behaving twitchy/jerky in cold weather, still it had around 632 000 km on it. Release bearing was still perfect but got replaced because it's silly to not do it while the transmission is out anyway. Could still feel the machining marks in the flywheel and the clutch they put in had less friction material on it than the old one! Not used for racing, but still impressive. He had the clutch replaced at around 130k km because of the same issue, car has currently ran north of 850k km and still going strong, although that old diesel is not very happy about cold weather any more and has developed a very very slight knocking sound at idle.

I've been using hydraulic throwout bearings for 25 years in circle track applications and never had the problems you've described. The key is matching components and bellhousing alignment, which is critical for long lasting performance. Slave cylinders do have some drawbacks including the risk of uneven pressure applied to the fork. Again, the number one culprit is block, bellhousing and transmission input shaft alignment. I've run up to 40 races without teardown and inspection in a single season without failure or alignment risk. The majority of failures are caused by not doing a nut and bolt check if the bellhousing and clutch diaphragm bolts in addition to the transmission to bellhousing bolts. High quality hydraulic fluid will reduce almost all risk of fluid and seal failures. I've had throwout bearing seals last 2 seasons (80 races). Most are replaced annually or every 2,000 laps if ambient temperatures average above 100F. NASCAR Cup engine Tri-Lite transmission bearings are beat the crap out of and I've never seen one fail if properly assembled and aligned.

There is no point because you have to change the clutch plates before then. Just upgrade your slave while you're there if you are that worried about it.
