At the time I bought my first pair of proper walking boots (a long time ago), I thought they were expensive at £100. But they gave me 10 years of fabulous hiking all over Britain, including the Peak District, Lakes, Snowdonia, Scottish Highlands, and coastal paths. So instead of focussing on that one whopping upfront payment, better to recognise the cost per mile, or per day, and see then that it's an amazing investment. After my boots retired from hiking, they then had another life on the allotment. I smiled every time I put them on, remembering what we'd been through together. When I look at old photos up in the mountains with long-time friends, or sunny valley walks with our younger family or now-departed parents, there are my old boots, trusty companions through it all. You can't put a price on all those wonderful memories. It's hard to think of anything that's been better value than those old boots. And now they've finally given up altogether, I still can't bring myself to get rid of them. So they sit on a shelf in the garage gathering dust... still making me smile whenever I see them.

Hi Paul, I am so glad that you have raised this subject for a number of reasons. I live and work in China and some years ago I wanted to buy a sous-vide cooker. At the time they were not common in domestic kitchens and very expensive. I tracked one down from John Lewis who wanted £499.95 for it. Here we had an American friend in the import/export business and mentioned this to him. He then opened up his computer to me and the exact same model was leaving the factory gate here in China for US$69.07. At the same time I also saw bicycles advertised by Halfords for £199.99 and £239.99 ALL leaving the factory gates at US$38.29. Kitchen towel stick-on hooks, plastic two pieces on a card for Woolworths (then of course) printed up with a price of £0.99 leaving the factory gate at US$0.045. He had many thousands of items showing the same sort of differentials but the most marked differences were for UK-bound stock. Even allowing for taxes and transportation there is absolutely no doubt at all that customers in the U.K. are truly being ripped-off at every step and have been for many years. By the way, for those viewers that sneer at “tents made in China”. My wife and I very happily camp in Naturehike tents year in, year out. We camp in all conditions from tropical heat to cold mountain tops. Earlier this year we were caught-out by a very vicious storm while camping on an island at sea-level in our Naturehike elevated A-frame tent. We had winds of up to 54mph and driving rain. We had a little shelter from our SUV and a few extra guy lines out but Naturehike did us proud. It never skipped a beat and we remained dry and warm inside throughout the night. Not a great deal of sleep but warm and dry. Some things, even a lot of things Made in China can and do have issues. They are made to a price point mainly fixed by the foreign buying companies who specify quality and factory gate price. It is however a huge mistake to think/assume that everything manufactured in China is trash. A lot of gear in your shops, including camping equipment bearing “high end” names has its origins over here. There are very different levels of quality produced and exported from excellent to, frankly shoddy but manufacturers will only produce what buyers request. Finally, be under no illusion. RIP-OFF BRITAIN is real. But Spam is also expensive here!!! Currently £1.52 per tin….

With all the hate and sadness in the country Paul sometimes we need to get out in the woods and realign ourselves with nature and get back to basics, what you are doing there is similar to what we did as kids in the 1960’s.. we often went to the woods with a box of matches, an empty bean can some tea, sugar, water, powdered milk and a couple of custard creams and we’d sit around a little fire making tea pretending we were cowboys in the wild west…of course kids today wouldn’t find that fun but 60 years ago it was especially after watching the original “Swallows and Amazons” on TV… such wonderful innocent times… 👍🏻

It's all about justification.......... You'll happily justify £1000 for a tent, but rant & rave because crisps are now £1 a packet. Perceived value plays it's part, Your £1000 tent is bomb proof, can pitch atop mountain tops, keep you safe, but your can of Spam only keeps your hunger at bay for a few hours. My old man always used to bang on about spending the most you could afford on whatever it was you were buying (within reason & sense), buy once, cry once sort of thing. Quality costs. It's a funny old game innit. ATB P.S. Gotta say, am well impressed with your sketch & painting style/skills Paul, really good mate, really good.

Such a very interesting topic. My passion is warhammer and miniature painting. Sure, I could spend £200 on toy soldiers but the hours of painting, playing and socialising it brings, you could argue, makes it small expense. It's all subjective, however I agree - spam should NOT be that expensive! 😂

@Paul I can't afford some of the gear that you use but I also have stuff that I bought years ago that I use for camping that was much cheaper when I bought it. You're making these videos for yourself first and us second. Please don't take complaints to heart. That's why KZbinrs end up burning out as you did a couple of years ago. You work hard for what you enjoy. I spend my money on a bit of cheaper camping gear but also on mountain bikes for me and my son. Total mistake forgetting the brown sauce though and I think you should add one of your little bottles with a drop of Hendersons 😃

Spam, corned beef and other family staples when your mum was saving money in the '70's and '80's have got really expensive. Don't get me started on monkfish that pubs used to substitute for scampi before the rules said that they couldn't do it. It's a lot cheaper to buy scampi nowadays than monkfish. Hoping to catch some of the latter on our latest camping trip and a boat trip so we can enjoy it on the grill

My guily pleasure goes as follows, Paul. I love camping cooking equipment. I've got a range of them, from an old Camping Gaz burner, through double camping gas burners to my recent acquisition, a wood burning stove for free fuel cooking. I do use all my toys, but not as frequently as i should. I justified my Jetboil Zip by quoting your good self to my wife. Why not use a flask she cried. My reply, Paul Messner says "where's the fun in that?". Instantly bailed out of trouble. 😅😅😅

Your comment about hair dryers reminds me of Terry Pratchett's boot theory, courtesy of Sam Vimes in his book Men At Arms: "The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet."

Certainly for people like myself who are not well off, its more that fact most just can not afford it. We’d love to only buy once and spend some good money on some Good gear but we can’t as we don’t have the money and then it makes it hard to enjoy something fully when it’s not accessible for us. My £30 tent is going to be crap onto of mountain but your £1000 tent is perfect. Just keep in mind people do watch you for you but try to be mindful of less off people who do watch you but may get a little envious because they can’t afford it.

Unbelievably I was pondering that just the other day how best to get corned beef out of a tin, because it always sticks. I even looked it up on the internet ... not a sausage. The vacuum problem is something to be considered, although I think I'm going to try putting it in warm water for a couple of minutes first just to see if that loosens it. A hole in the bottom might be problematic if I don't use it all in one go.

Another nice one Paul. Useful tip on the spam can too. My other hobby is bikes, so my thoughts on Bromptons. My bike cost 700 quid. More than a cheap car, but no tax, no insurance, the motor is fueled on beer and bananas, and it is my everyday transport. How much is a years cable subscriptions now? Go out for walks or rides, it is cheaper. I went back to UK for a year a while back and did not subscribe to cable TV, no need with so much stuff on t'internet. I also broke free from the sofa and went out every day. On the rare occasions I really needed a car, I hired a cheapy for the day. I guess my priorities are different.

No, I'm not at all feeling guilty about spending sometimes some extra money for my passions. Yet I try always to find out how to get a certain functionality without spending anything extra, and when this works fine I do not even see the need for spending anything. So, I have many DIY items or cheap stuff, such as e.g. homemade wood stoves or simple knives like Mora or Swiss Army (which became quite expensive meanwhile, just to mention that) instead of over costly electrical burners or Bushcraft knives or any custom made luxury knives. Yet I enjoy seeing others using high end gear - it is everybody's own decision abouth what to buy and at what prices to buy. About things becoming expensive, I guess it is mostly an effect of two factors: 1) inflation or ordinary price rising rates and 2) a good memory over long periods of time. Means, just for example, if the average inflation is 5% every year, a basic amount of 100 for purchasing whatever it is rises over 10 years up to 163, over 20 years up to 265, and over 30 years up to 432. If you do the same calculation for, let's say, 7% average inflation rate, we end up at 197, 387 and 761 for the same periods of time. So as better your memory and as longer you look back in time, the bigger the increase seems to be, but is usually just an effect of low rises over many years. Lucky you, as you live in the UK where inflation rate was over long periods of time always below 5%. And my true condolences to people who have to endure inflation rates which are in their country since years well above 50% ... I cannot even imagine how to manage such a cruel situation.

Hi Paul, SPAM is really shoulder. There is no good mechanical way get that meat, all of it is hand trimmed! I also ski on average 150 days a year, makes my season pass less than $5 a day. Like a can of SPAM a day.😹 Happy cat day 😸

Span is very expensive nowadays, but it’s a cheap alternative to freeze-dried food. 👍

Looking forward to your video with Andrew and his Brompton bicycles. a bike packing wild camp would be good, a bit of Sheffield and Nottinghamshire madness lol, you both might learn a thing or two lol. And in the next episode you could get Patrick Dickinson on one as well that would be a hoot.

I grew up being a mini me of my Dad's love of the outdoors and outdoor cooking. He loved fixing SPAM, also Sardines. That's where the likeness ends... I simply couldn't eat anything SPAM or Sardines.

Apart from the fact that we have something like depreciation there’s also something like looking forward and saving for your “special item you want”. We do tend to use things for a short while and then discard it and we teach it our next generations too. All for “comfort and recognition”. I still cherish my dinky toys after 55 years and still know what I had to do and promise to get them. But in the modern day treadmill of consuming you have to follow the hype. Especially by marketeers and trendwatchers and influencers (like you but you’re okay Paul 😅). Who eve thought the latter 2 could become professions that could generate income? I think being outdoors can help you get out of the treadmill and in a more sense full mindset. Even in a tent made out of plastic bags 😊. (Probably even more)

I already had a pilots licence but wanted to build my own plane. I had to compromise and bought a project that’s needed a new engine and firewall forward. The result is now flying after a lot of travelling to gets parts and scratching of head to figure things out. It also meant I’ve had to work another 2 years instead of retiring which is probably the more difficult thing of the two to stay focussed on. What now? … well 3 other pilots and I have gone and bought another plane that’s needs even more doing before it can fly.

Just came back from Borneo yesterday. Benn out there for a month and the locals in the jungle treks I was working on were deer frying spam 😂. It was mega cheap there. Like 3 or 4 ringgits a big tin. That’s like 50 p

Well i thought the Lofi stove was a really good blend of old and new tech, and then I saw the price..... thats 44.5 tins of spam for one of those. I will stay with my old alpine stove on that basis. 😂. The programs and the format are good and varied. When I sit down in the evening to see what to watch, its always the Messner Family I watch first these days, and that says a lot. If you want indulgent, try landscape photography. Now that can get seriously expensive.

SPAM stands for 'Something Posing As Meat'. I still like it though. Mustard and a slice of cheese would make that sandwich perfect.

Hey Paul, Great video as always. Quick question - I know your based in the UK, as am I. I assume the woodland you are in is a publicly accessible but privately owned area? How do you go about doing your outdoors-y stuff in regards fires and stoves etc? Ever had any bother? Thanks again.

The problem is people in the UK pay but they pay more than most other developed countries and the suppliers know they xan get away with it. Simple answer is don't buy any camping gear for 6 months and then you watch the prices drop.
