I tried this 4 times. It worked as you said except it did not clear SES light. I had to disconnect the positive battery cable for 3 to 4 minutes and it reset the ECM. Worked like a champ.

Good deal. Also don forget to check for vacuum leaks. My Xterra had the 2 small houses on each head cover busted up. So the light kept coming back on intermittently. The hoses are small with a 90 degree turn, near the front of the head covers.

Thank you for this I tried this on my 2006 Altama . My mechanic replaced a couple of engine sensors and told me the check engine light would go off after 100 miles. Well it didn't. Anyway I looked up a few of these videos on KZbin none work except yours . Like you said it will take a few tries got it after three times . Light is off . Thank you. 😎 very helpful.

Dear Sir: Thank you for your post. I tried on my 2005 Xterra and it worked out fine today. The Service Engine Soon (SES) light went away on the second attempt. I will now drive the vehicle for sometime and observe. Before I came across your video i had changed the old battery with a new one and noticed that the process of disconnecting the battery also resets the SES light. However, after about 50 miles of driving the SES light came back on. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this topic. Best regards.

+Matthew Scott - That is correct, There is a sequence to follow between the ignition key and accelerator pedal. May take a few times since timing the sequence is crucial for the check engine light to reset.

Dude! This worked on the second try. We replaced the distributor, o2 sensors repeatedly etc at a cost of more than 1200 for repeated visits. The replacement of the distributor happened after the idle was so bad the truck rocked. At the time the plugs, wires and 2 of the exhaust sensors were replaced. That seemed to help, but the idle came back - he goes and replaces the 02 sensors again and a day later, the light pops on again. This time I replace the gas cap, light goes out immediately. But no, it came back on. O2 sensor again replaced. By this point, rough idle is gone, no performance issues at all, had him clean the injectors, run a pressure test on the fuel line - pressure is fine. Which leads me to today - light pops on- I’m noticing a theme, it comes on at times when the fuel is low...so this is either an exhaust leak or an evap leak...either way, I’m glad I cleared the code because she’s running just fine.

Wow!! You did a lot to your vehicle. Glad this helped clear out the code. On the older models, mine being an 02, check the 2 hoses that go to the valve covers.

Hello Abe, follow the timing marks on the Camshaft and Crankshaft, they should be clearly marked. if you removed the distributor, then you must align that also. For the distributor, line up the mark on the shaft and the protruding mark on the distributor housing. Once you install the distributor and is all the way down be sure that the rotor buton is pointing at the #1 plug. there are plenty of online resources with pictures for this.

I do not, I some cases the simplest thing is to check the gasoline cap. Even a not good enough seal on the system can cause the engine light to come up. I had a bad gas cap on my 2012 and replacing it fix the light coming on every one in a while Another is to check your sparkplugs and wires, distributor cap and the gas you are using at the pump. Gas with ethanol will make the engine light turn on. More difficult fixes would be O2 sensors (4 total) and timing on the engine if you haven't done a timing bglt service on your vehicle.

My recommendation would be that you at least know which error code you are about to clear before you clear it. Once the vehicle is on diagnostic mode (when the light flashes) you should be able to count the long and short flashing light intervals and determine the error code, just have pen and paper handy. Hope that helps.

It really depends on the error you are referring to. The Service engine light can identify more than one error on the vehicle.
