Hi friends! Today I am reviewing a gem of a gouache that I think deserves consideration from any gouache artist, the Turner Designer's Gouache. I purchased a set of 18 25ml tubes on Amazon for half the price as it is sold on Jerry's Artarama so be sure to price shop!
Amazon: amzn.to/46YsWQ7 (affiliate link)
Jerry's Artarama: www.jerrysarta...
Note: This review is for the Turner Design Gouache which is an opaque watercolor. They also have an acrylic version called Turner Acryl Gouache which I have used in this video: • Wildflower Bouquet Acr...
Pros:
Price
Pigment and lightfast info included
Color selection
Uniform matte finish
Open stock colors available
Mixes well
Vibrant saturated color
Cons:
A slight chemical smell on the blues fresh out of the tube (I didn't notice any smell when I rewet the paint in my palette though)
Bottom line: I think this is a great value for money. If you are concerned with lightfastness I recommend purchasing open-stock colors from Jerry's Artarama, you can click the notes on any color and see the pigment info. The price on Amazon for the set is much lower so I would recommend starting with that and replacing tubes at Jerry's (or adding to your collection) as you run out. This gouache is a solid choice and in my opinion, a much better way to spend your money over a student grade gouache.

just want to suggest when people give away their art supplies think about donating the supplies to senior citizen, community centers or senior citizen care facilities. There are those of us who absolutely love art and can no longer afford the products because we are on a fixed income.

The illustrator Rob Howard who wrote Gouache for Illustration really liked Turner Gouache. It was new to the American market at the time he wrote that book. As he stressed, Design Gouache is for illustration and scanning/printing. No lightfastness expected, because the originals were tossed - the print was the point. Jerry’s puts these on sale pretty often, especially around Christmas. Thanks for the review!

My pleasure! Yes, I've been setting up a lightfast gouache mother palette and I was very careful to select lightfast pigments.davinci, Daniel smith holbein and m graham had the best options for me.

Hullo Lindsay, I am very familiar with Turners Design Gouache and I had that ol’ love hate relationship with these paints! They are very nice paints, but if you plan on keeping your artworks you better use UV glass and UV varnish coating to protect the picture! I worked at a design firm just out of college and I worked on illustration boards. The most used size was 11 x 14, they bought them in bulk and at the end of they day they required you to place your work in your bottom drawer space, we never left our boards on the desktop! I never thought of gouache as a permanent medium. I had every painting photographed and destroyed afterwards. I know that it was a company policy that assured customers not changing the project, unless they were willing to pay for a complete re-do! Once they approved the artwork before we took pictures, afterwards the art was trashed. I enjoyed watching you work with these paints, I am simply not willing to use them. I may need to go back to Turners but I still want to see if others are using DaVinci Paints gouache, I think I am going to watch your video again. I have seen most are rated at 2 and 1 lightfastness, I have not made a decision as yet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions on this paint.

They have nice lightfast options but to me the paint is like a hybrid of watercolor and gouache. As long as you are cool with that you will probably enjoy them. They are not great for flat fiels of color as several colors are transparent (even though the website says opaque) and have a floss to them. I have found if you ate mixing the colors down a lot and working in thin layers like watercolor on watercolor paper they preform well. They pan well too. I put several in my large studio lightfast gouache palette.

Hi Lindsay, I have the trial set of Turner Design Gouache that I purchased months ago for $16 on Amazon. I am not an expert on gouache but I found the Turner brand smoother than Holbein. Plus the Holbein gouache has doubled in price over the last year. Very pleased with Turner. ~ Kathy Busby

It has, I'm kicking myself that I didn't but the golbein 24 set if 25ml paint was it was $85 on amazon last year ago! The irodori 15 ml 12 tube sets were $40. Oh well, I have plenty of paint 😆 🤣 😂

Yes, I bought the Spring Holbein Irodori for about $40 almost 2 years ago - then when I looked at the other seasonal sets - they had doubled and almost tripled in price. Some prices were $125!!

I was surprised to hear that you hadn’t used these before. I purchased a set (of 12) last fall as well, when the set of 12 was on Super Sale at Jerry’s for $29.99. Like you, I had used their acrylic gouache and liked it, so I decided to buy this set since it was such a good deal. I was impressed by them for the price. I do find the binder will sometimes squeeze out before the gouache, but it’s not really a problem. The set of 12 has two colors with the fluorescent pigment - Brilliant Violent, and Rose Violet, which I believe is the PR122 color. I did do my own “lightfast” test for about 4 months, from April to August of this year, in a very bright south-facing patio door. I found no obvious fading except for those two colors with the fluorescent pigment. As I had guessed would happen, they just lost their brilliance. They still had strong color but it had shifted to a toned down color.

The colors are kind of a fashion set, not for mixing so much (multiple pigments and white) but quality wise they are nice. They even rewet on the palette from dry well. They are made by someone else and I'm trying to figure our who. They have pigment info and work well. My only downside is the caps can get crusty. It's weird. I would feel more comfortable reviewing them if they had a basic mixing set.

I thought you reviewed these is the past, Lindsay?!?! Great review for the 18 set, but with my set of 12-25mls, purchased on Amazon from Jerry’s in Dec’23 for ~$28.66, I had a 75% binder separation issue… weird eh!!😮 Loved your paintings created it them, and I do 110% agree with you, they are tremendous fun to paint with!!😂🎉🙏🏾👍🏾💜🥰🎉🤩 Thanks for posting, and ‘Happy Labor Day 2024!!’ 🎉

I have ordered these recently and they should arrive this week. I’m excited to try them out. Was going to go with Shinhan but decided on these. I love that these caps look like they would be easier to remove than the ones on metal tubes. I have a couple tubes of Auqafine Gouache from Daler Rowney and they little caps are hard to deal with even though the paint is nice. Thank you for another great video!

I have a question about gouache. I have Shinhan gouache and each time I use it, it is very, very thin. Sometimes binder comes out first, but even when that doesn't happen, it's so very thin. How can I help this from happening? Consistency has gotten worse over time.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Ай бұрын
You need to mix it. If you have a long needle you can insert it through the neck of the tube and stir it. If that fails you can squirter it all on a small container and stir it up. Sarah Burns just did a video in this. They will be good as new after:)
