I can’t imagine that any of us are selling our journals for anywhere near the true cost of our time. Handmade items considered "crafts" and especially those (primarily) made by women have always been waaaaaaaaaay undervalued. Vintage handmade quilts, embroidered pieces, etc., sell for ridiculously low prices. 😢😢😢
@angelburba6352 жыл бұрын
In your humility you also failed to mention the premium added for the maker. Journals from someone such as you, 49 Dragonflies, Tracy Fox, Gayle, and about a dozen other named personalities will sell for a higher price than something made by an unknown maker I think.

Your transparency, disclosure, pricing and just plain honesty is admirable. Once you gave shipping cost breakdown for many areas now discussing your journal pricing. As far as people I watch you are the only one who does this. I personally could not afford a $ 200.00 journal, especially with the cost of everyday necessities rising. Again I admire your openness to discuss these things. I wish I knew you personally, you are the type of person who would be lovely to have as a friend. Vicki

I price mine according to what the market will bear. If mine are selling very quickly, I raise the price. If not selling at all, I may lower the price, but always I keep my time and effort in mind. And yes, I have favorites too. Nice video, love your work!

Women are notorious for underselling themselves. Western cultures are also notorious for undervaluing artwork. In order for us to change that culture, we have to price our artwork with a proper value. My first journal sold for $200. It was a custom piece of work, and most of the price went into the cover art and the engineering of the music box compartment. I would have loved to do more, but I had to keep myself in “check” to make sure I didn’t end up creating a piece of art for free because I didn’t pay myself for the hours of work that went into it.

I'm intrigued by one of these taking 12 hours (unless I heard or interpreted incorrectly)...I'm nowhere near done in 12 hours 😳 So far mine tend to be less decorative as I've still got the mindset that journals need space to be written in and therefore have flips, flaps, tucks, belly bands, but I can't yet bring myself to cover entire pages....yours are beautiful.

Same! I love adding pretty embellishments but make lots of things extra to add journaling space. I need to add at least some areas to breathe on every page because I'm assuming someone will want space to actually journal/write, add their own Ephemera, make the journal their own etc. I find my journals get quite fat since for every highly decorated page, I'm adding extra stuff to make up for the loss of writing space.

My 2 cents :: I think the answer is her journals are at least worth $234... This is not a ridiculous amount of money for the time, materials and talent. When you really crunch the numbers this comes out to $19 an hour (assuming it took you 12 hours to make the journal) (this does not include material costs). The fact that the other seller was able to sell TWO so not just a one-off situation, at that price speaks volumes. I know that this is so hard especially as women to properly price our effort and talents but we gotta start somewhere. I get what you mean about how fast you want to sell them, but a week or two is not bad at all. It takes me easily a month to make a journal so for one to take 2 weeks to sell and at the higher price point is awesome! This about how many of the lower priced journals you would have to make/sell in those 2 weeks to get that same monetary outcome! You say it takes you 12 hours to make one of your journals... I wonder if you're including coffee/tea dying papers, pre-making clusters or other decor and any other processes like this that you might do "off camera" to prep for a journal. I guestimated a journal I made took about 60 hours and was completed over a 5 week timeframe.

Miss T you are correct you price it to sell however you have to cover your cost and make a profit so that you have the extra moneys to purchase more stuff to craft with otherwise you are just spinning your wheels we are here to enjoy what we do and make a living also at least supplement our income and postage has steadily gone up so that have to put into account also also printable are so expensive when you pay 26 dollars then you have to print the papers out the ink is costly and good paper is costly even the wax paper the bakers paper the coffee dyed papers the doilies lets get real it is very costly /expensive to do what we do so ladies/gents please price accordingly and lets have fun doing what makes us so very happy experience speaking here.

235 US dollars??!!! Wow! I don't think I could afford any journal that amount even if I wanted it and I LOVE journals. Do you put your name or a label on your journals now? I think as time goes on and you become a "brand" that any size journal price (again, within reason) becomes a factor as well. For example, a "Tina" made journal becomes valuable to have and so the price sometimes justifies what customer are paying. I love your journals, so I am glad they are affordable!! This was a great video and very helpful for those of us who are just getting started. The journals are BEAUTIFUL. Thanks to the follower who requested this video and thank you doing this video!

I love buying from crafters who create lovely creations and have a sweet family. I feel like you are my friend. I live in Texas and when I buy things overseas I know the cost is greater. I just don't like when people charge way greater than the actual shipping. I think you should charge more. Your items are so different with your own printables and all the ephemera you create. Plus I would love to think my purchase helps you spend more time with your precious children. I've learned so much from you and I would splurge to buy a journal from you. Creative people usually underestimate the worth of their work. This is your business. Your price may be to high, if it doesn't sell after a month or two. Until that point is reached.....charge more. Love to you and your kiddos.

Shipping includes packaging and cost to drive to where you ship, plus shipping cost. Unfortunately everything is expensive. Lots of sellers return overage, but you know ahead of time what your pay, if you don’t want to pay, don’t buy. Crafts are very expensive to make and take take many long hours for the beautiful products. Buy what you Love❤️🥰

This was interesting, Tina, with everything you said very practical and probably much as anyone would expect. What I didn't hear was prices for the journals you have completed and are presumably for sale or have just recently sold. While I agree all must evaluate and come to individual conclusions, I, for example still have no idea how much a journal might cost if I wanted to purchase one. I went to your Etsy shop and didn't see any of those journals in the shop. While I don't sell anything, I've been thinking lately about purchasing a journal, but I'd sure like to have an idea of what I could expect for what amount of money. This may not be presented very clearly. I would have liked, and it would have been very valuable to me, to know how much those journals you make sell for. That way I can either stop dreaming of having one, or try very hard to get one. Thanks Tina, for being one of the most genuine and authentic creators I watch. I've enjoyed you for several years now and wish you and your family all the best.

Thank you so much for doing this video. There is so much confusion about Junk Journals and their value. I tend to think that the amount of “real” vintage, one off, design materials as well as the craftsmanship should be the most important things to consider. In their purest form, these journals are art and rarely do artists get paid well for their time or creativity during their lifetime! I, personally, don’t like the digitals because then you are missing one of the main reason I do junk journals - to keep these beautiful pieces of paper and materials (and memories) out of a landfill. Using ink and paper seems to add to the environmental problem instead of achieving that purpose. I guess you should be able to resell any piece of art you own. Maybe the high price she sold your journals for is a compliment to your reputation and talent!

I have to say the creators creativity is also something to be considered when pricing - artists using their artwork within the journal whether it be painting, textile work etc makes for a one of a kind unique product .I have made numerous junk journals for myself and close friends but I treasure the one journal I purchased when I was new to this craft as a source of inspiration and a piece of book art- sadly the maker has passed away but her artistry lives in her journal .I love my journal as an endless medium for creativity ,the daily writing is only the beginning I would think that many purchasers of journals are looking for something that feeds the soul such as a piece of art would but at a manageable price. Good video ❤️

Hi there, thank you so so much for sharing your experience, very helpful I have learned so much! I didn't realized that this is what I was looking for. How heartbreaking is it to find your precious creations sold on another market. But I feel it was a great experience for you to see your worth aswell. Actually for the same reason I price my books higher, but Iam a slow passionate crafter. I can't duplicate anything I craft and also create other handmade creations, I started junkjournalling about 1,5 year ago (Iam a diarist and use my own books. I love the quality) but have been collecting materials for about 4+ years and being an artist since childhood. I might look like a beginner business wise but not as a crafter, so after a few markets I found out no one wants to buy a book from €200 on a small markets in town(I understand). Social media platforms doens't seem to add up value for me as it takes more headache to keep up and don't get results, so that is the lesson Iam learning now, I guess.. I feel the need to summon up my courage and jump into KZbin. Thank you for the reflection, my apologies I never ramble so much, new subscriber here, sending you much love and appriciation. ❤ Oh and I totally love your journals! I feel creative again.. after a while, Much thanks!

Thank you for your insight. I am new to Junk Journal making, but have sold pottery and jewelry at craft fairs and markets for years. Pricing was always a struggle until I became more confident in my work and gained experience. It seems we, as artists, never really make a decent hourly wage, but are mostly just happy someone loves our work enough to buy it and cherish it in the first place. 🙄 I think it is definitely a huge compliment that whoever that was that resold your journals could get that much money for them!! I laughed hysterically when my mom told me she found one of my early ceramic cups for sale at the Thrift store. Then to add insult to injury, when my mom told the lady at the register that her daughter had made it, she gave it to her at no charge. 😂😂😂

Personally I'm in love with the smaller pink and cream clock cover journal the best! That would be more "valued" by me compared to the super chunky colourful ones. Even the Amazon packaging one is beautiful to me. I think the price of anything is justified by the person who wants to own it, and that price can go as high as their desire is. . These are one-off pieces, even if not made with one-off items inside. I don't care about something "being" vintage if it's nothing special to look at. I'd rather have a beautiful vintage style printable page, that is just dreamy and gorgeous, than a yellow brittle page from the back of an old encyclopedia. Obviously we all have different tastes, but I'd want a journal first and foremost that I can write in, not too over embellished, feminine, pretty, cohesive, tasteful, made with precision - I'm not a fan of loose threads dangling or haphazard placement - but again, some people like that style. . So I think the biggest factor in pricing....is targeting the perfect buyer. It's like antiques, you see those TV shows buying and selling antiques, and an old plate COULD be worth £300, so for £12 it's worth buying it to sell. BUT only if the buyers who really seek that type of china are present in the auction house on the day of the sale. The reality is, they're lucky if they get £25 for it on the day, bought by someone who knows it's worth more but isn't about to fork out a fortune for something they're not that into. If you had a buyer who had an entire dinner service and was missing one plate...they may go bonkers and throw £500 or more at you and beg for that plate, because to them, that completes a full set that could be worth thousands! . My point is, with rare pieces, and having a small business at home, you're limited to selling to your specific audience, so your prices are reflected by your viewers. A large proportion of which I would guess are female, and if they have the time to watch many junk journalling videos on KZbin, they are mostly therefore at home a lot of the time. This would include mothers with small children, people who are unemployed or only work part time, and I know for a fact that a huge amount of your viewers are like me, long term health issues, unable to work, at home most of the time, very few real life friends, and people who like to sit at home crafting themselves. . I personally have never bought a journal made by anyone else... because I can make them myself specifically made for me. I buy Digi Kits, because I can't make those...if I knew how to or had the necessary software to make them, then that would reflect on how many I bought from others. My point is, you have a large audience, and yet still, very few of those viewers can justify spending £100 on a journal...not because they don't think it's worth that, but because their child needs new shoes, their car needs fixing or they still have to finish off decorating their lounge and haven't picked out the curtains yet! . With one-off items, you could easily sell one of your journals for a thousand pounds - if a millionaire was being pestered by his daughter because she wanted that specific journal! The true value lies in it's rarity...and finding the perfect buyer with money to burn! . Your pricing reflects on your audience mainly, not on your skill or how much time and effort you've really put in sourcing everything in the first place! Online shopping or browsing car boot sales or charity shops can easily take hours at a time, so even if you found a vintage chunk of lace for a fiver, it's not really £5 when you consider petrol, parking, and the hours where you could have been earning £20+ an hour at a workplace. That "bargain" chunk of lace may technically have cost you £50 by the time you get back home! And that's before you've even snipped into it! . Guaranteed your journals are actually WORTH £235 when you price each and every item used, and the time spent hunting for the contents - not to mention the week or so it took you to make, in between running your home and being a busy Mum! 😳 . You don't think to charge that much though because of the riff raff watching you! 😂🤣😅 LMFAO! We're mostly a bunch of working class ordinary people so you have to factor us into the equation. You'll have to ditch us all and target the toffs in Chelsea who spend ludicrous amounts of money on some giant framed paint spill they call modern art these days! 😂 . Then you'll earn the proper price these cost you to make. 😘😘😘

I really don't want to do Etsy, and I just am selling them for just enough to be able to buy more supplies. I guess I try to think, what would I pay for this journal. But without a shop, how else can I get my journals out there for people to see? I think some journals I see are priced outrageously, but they sell. So some of us smaller makers need to find out how to get a break.

You are very honorable Tina! I don’t sell, but I do think that they can be real works of art and that is probably often the reason why people buy them. That probably also goes back to your point about how much you l personally like them because that also probably shows that they are a work of art! Not that many people think as much about the buyer as you do! I’ve also been long irritated with a seller who solicits other people’s makes for the purpose of selling them for them ( I know that for some this might be a helpful thing) but she sells them for so little that I feel that it disrespects the makers. Just makes me sad…but you are making me happy!❤

This was very helpful Tina. Thank you! I am new to junk journal making and you are right, a lot of time, love, and money to into these. My job was recently eliminated and I was trying to decide could I take a chance and do this for a living or try and find another job in my profession of Financial Aid in another university. I know things do not happen quickly here but I do enjoy making junk journals. Any who you have provided great information and content here. Thank you for sharing. One question, what type of overhead filming equipment do you use?

Great topic 😍 I have a feeling that it is tabu to talk about how mutch the journals costs. It is the person that sets the price, and if some one dont agree, it’s like an atac on that person. So it can be scary to put your self out there. You are brave👏🙌 And you are a professional Tina. And a very admired one to😍 my Mother always says: "Think like a man" when it comes to pricing your items 😅😂 sadly there is stil a bit of truth in that. Love from a wet, 6 degrees Arctic Norway 👏🙌🌻🏵🌺🌼🌹💐🤗

Tina thank you for sharing your ideas on selling journals. I have been Smitten with Your journals but, have never been able to get one - before the others purchase the journal! I am so sorry that someone basically stole your Artwork. very sorry to hear that this happened, yet you share the story with your usual graceful lady approach. I collect journals, for the specific art and handmade quality. Since I can''t purchase all the ones that I enjoy, I've started making them, about 7 years ago. Your style is so luxurious, feminine, and beautiful.

If you think of this is artwork and not crafting, you can price them higher...artists draw a big circle or throw splashes of paint on a canvas and charge thousands of dollars then your artwork has great value...tactile...beautiful...nostalgic and useful...they are starting people at amazon at $15 per hour...I am sure you are worth that!

Tina, you are so sweet! I love how you think about others! I hope you are still making money though and you aren’t under charging. I guess really it’s what the buyer is willing to pay! I’m sure your big journals could go for $200 easy because 1-it’s hand made by you and 2-they are super gorgeous! I’ve seen some plain journals go for 200-300 and I’m shocked! But people buy them! Great video! I love making my own and it’s my hobby but I think you made a lot of good points! Enjoy your day! 💜

I thought your Video was wonderful! I am somebody who knows nothing about making Junk Journals; never made one myself, or actually ‘use’ them for purpose - but I DO collect them! As a Collector though, I can tell you, I do appreciate and understand all the hard work, hours, cost and love that goes into making such things - and I take all of that into account when I am purchasing and the prices I expect to pay. One thing you didn’t mention, was 'Themes'. To a Collector, Themes can be important. I purchase certain Themes. That doesn’t mean of course that I haven’t purchased the odd one that’s just taken my fancy; but by and far, it will be a Theme that I like to own/collect. I would expect to pay more for an unusual Theme - not just because it cost more or took longer to make, so it’s just another aspect to consider. I’ve paid cheaply, but like you say, I’ve also paid hundreds. Touch wood, I’ve not been disappointed yet with the very expensive ones I’ve purchased so far. I view Junk Journals very much as pieces of Art, and the people who make them kind of Artists more than anything else - I LOVE the Medium as much as I might love the Medium of Painting. I think this Video was very informative and very helpful for those who don’t already consider the work that goes into such things. Thanks for sharing.

In the US we have a cheaper rates for mailing books, called media mail. It's slower to arrive, but much cheaper.
@shabbydabbydoodah2 жыл бұрын
What a fantastic idea, maybe eventually we will get something like that, I hope so because it’s becoming so expensive x
@peggydid2 жыл бұрын
@@shabbydabbydoodah Check with PO, but media mail is for printed-bound books.
@CreatorsCall2 жыл бұрын
It only applies to certain items though and not to handmade journals. I got questioned once when mailing a printed vintage menu and was informed that it didn't qualify as Media Mail. So I wound up having to pay for postage a second time as I had already attached my printed ETSY label to it. Only printed books, music and media items such as tapes, video, etc. qualify for the classification.

This was a great and very relevant video, so thank you for making it. I'm a long time crafter but new to junk journals. I have purchased several to have examples of different ways to make them, plus I have gifted several. The journals you showed are just beautiful!! I agree that postage rates are really high, but agree with you that squashing them into an envelope is not the best idea. I have purchased several from a youtube market place and several of the journals I purchased were put in envelopes (and not always padded envelopes) so they arrived with bent corners and broken dangles. I would be happy to pay good money for the journals you showed!! Keep up the great work and inspiring videos!!

Oh great topic, I'd love to sell at some point! The work and supplies you put into these beautiful creations warrants higher prices. Whhhaaattt? Can't believe she made so much profit without doing anything, I wouldn't have the nerve! They're very obviously your work though😍. I think people understand the real vintage pricing. 🙊 I get you charging more for something you want to keep! Ugh, postage is awful now 🙈, yes 'free postage ' goes on the price! We just paid £25 to send English biscuits, chocolate and tea to a friend in America🙈 but he paid $89 to send a similar parcel here 😱😱😱. Good point, they're all original one offs. No repeating would be boring. Yes you have to make a living and you put your heart and sole into every one. £500????????🙈🙊🙉. Yeah creative people understand what goes into them. Yes my daughter started her shop on Instagram before taking it over to Etsy. (She makes gorgeous children's clothes). That's very interesting and helpful, would I have the confidence???🙈. Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖

Hey, I'm from Luxembourg, and junk journals are pretty much unknown here. Everyone I've told about it so far didn't know about it. That's why I ordered 90% of my products overseas. So far I have invested a lot in the products, which are expensive on the one hand, the shipping costs are immense on the other and then, not to forget, the import fees, which are very high. If I were to sell a junk journal / folio, it would be very expensive even without labor.
@shabbydabbydoodah2 жыл бұрын
We are lucky that we can get supplies a little easier over here, all those additional costs really mount up x

I have a question about the junk journals. I noticed many of them don't have really any place to journal in them. Is this not as important to people?? Just curious. I love the look of them but don't see much use other than the beauty of just looking at them.
