this also shows the power that music brings to a film production. The music is the interpretation of the scene. It heightens the value of the actors subtle facial changes. The music are the words being spoken. I am sure if you did not know this scene and you saw it without music, it would be less

Darcy doesn’t speak the entire scene but his eyes scream how much he is in love with her. Elizabeth’s uncle even looks over at him and smiles because Darcy’s face shows pure love and admiration for his niece :)
@frankieb43
@frankieb43 Жыл бұрын
In this adaptation it's always as if the aunt and uncle are aware of things that Lizzy isn't about Darcy or they seem to know they should be together. The way they smile knowingly at each other when they arrive in the trip to Pemberley and when Aunt and Lizzy are talking about the 'transformation' in Darcy's character she's acting as if she doesn't know things. Also when they say 'the mistress of Pemberley will have a great deal to put up with, from what I hear...' it's strange but I guess the final line of the novel states clearly that they helped them get together in the end.

What I like about Jennifer Ehler as Lizzi is that she is modest, takes on behavioral characteristics that an eighteenth century girl should have. Even in scenes where she faces unpleasant issues, such as here or in the first marriage proposal, she doesn't lose the sense of limit, of education. She and Colin Firth undoubtedly brought the characters to life in incredible ways. It's my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice for the care of the interpretation details.

The other versions feels like 'P&P FOR DUMMIES' because they rewrite the characters based upon modern perception, over simplifying everything and sometimes even betraying the core persona of a character for the sake of making everything understandable for the lazy audience.
@Musicienne-DAB1995
@Musicienne-DAB1995 3 жыл бұрын
@@marysweeney7370 Yes, 'way too modern' is absolutely right. Elizabeth Bennet hated indecorum, rudeness, flamboyant and improper behaviour. When her family embarrassed themselves during the Netherfield Ball, she was 'in agonies'. And when her father refused to discipline Lydia, she was disappointed, and later blamed his 'indolence' for allowing Lydia to be seduced by Wickham.

When Miss Bingley mentioned Wickham's name, it startled Georgiana and that is why Darcy started to rise. Elizabeth knowing the reason for Georgiana's reaction went immediately to her to help and give comfort. Her look to Darcy spoke volumes about her compassion for others and it shows most evidently on his face his appreciation for her act of kindness toward his most cherished sister.

He's giving her a look of gratitude mixed with adoration. The gratitude is because Miss Bingley, while trying to smear Elizabeth's reputation, unknowingly upset Georgianna (remember Georgianna thought she was in love with Wickham and then found out she was being used) and Lizzie immediately thought not of herself but of Georgianna and went to distract her when she faltered. Miss Bingley has no idea what she's done, because that bit of gossip was private. It's partly why Darcy snaps at her after Elizabeth leaves. She insulted and upset Darcy's lil sis, and he won't forgive that.

Yes, so true. Darcy was grateful to Lizzy and realized how tactful and quick she was, in hiding Georgina's faltering embarrassment about Wickham. It also showed up the two Bingley sisters as clueless about reality. This was a pivotal scene, where Darcy realizes that Lizzy was every bit his equal. They both looked like protective doting parents over Georgiana. Great piece of acting by both. Lizzy held his eyes to signal that she welcomed his advances, and Darcy had fire in his eyes for her, a mix of adoration and admiration, with a predatory edge. Nicely done.

Darcy's smile was full of pride and self-assurance as he knew he had chosen the right woman to love. This series is, for me, the one that best adapts to Jane Austen's book. She is exquisite in everything: recreation, costumes, music and the leading couple has extraordinary chemistry. But what is really impressive is the performance of Mr. COLIN FIRTH, he is a true gentleman, very elegant and handsome and an actor out of series ... he does not need to speak (although he has a beautiful voice) his expressions, his smiles and especially their looks say it all, it's wonderful.

I feel like when Darcy really fell in love with Lizzie when she was at Pemberley as he can truly see what their life would be like here, one of the more underrated parts of Elizabeth's character is while Jane is the oldest, Lizzie really is the one who tries to mother her younger sisters. While she has her own issues with her family she also is fiercely protective of them even defending why her sisters are out in society to Lady Catherine, and sadly I think he's realizing how much Georgiana has been deprived of by not having a mother or a sister and he's seeing how easily Elizabeth fills that role.

Revisited the whole series today... I missed it all so much. But this scene... My heart... The way they look at each other... Understanding. Spark. Thankfulness. Admiration. LOVE My heart melted. Sigh... Will never grow tired of it. They are the best Elizabeth and Darcy. The whole choice for the characters in the series is amazing actually. Thank you BBC for creating the eternal piece of beauty. ❤️

The unrestrained love that’s visible on Darcy’s face as he looks at Elizabeth. He never thought he’d have the change to right things with her after his awful proposal. I just love this scene as he can’t even help let all his feeling show in every glance her way. It’s as if it’s just the two of them in the room, to Darcy. He sees no one else.

THIS is acting. The looks that the give each other are just of the purest happiest love. Both of them are just perfect in these roles. It's hard to play a romantic couple who, because of the time that the story is set in, don't touch or interact with each other a lot. But the looks they give each other are more than enough to show their true feelings.

@@missyadams I heard in an interview from Colin that he actually found that quite hard because he didn't love Elizabeth Bennett, he loved Jennifer! So he found it quite distracting at times! But I guess for this kind of thing where they're just looking at each other, it would be quite helpful :)

He just looks so safe in that one moment. I have read several comments, and they have just mentioned love and gratitude, but safety is key too. He went out on a limb, risking so much when he first proposed to her, and he lost. Again, he went out on a limb, but this time, there was minimal, if not nonexistent" misunderstanding. He knew his heart would not be so injured, it was accepted. One of my favorite actors said that love was acceptance, and I think that that adds a whole new layer to their mutual affection. Darcy has been somewhat aloof from the rest of society, and does not particularly care what people may think of him. I know from experience, as I take pains to be quirky, that even when you expect acceptance, it is still an amazing feeling to be correct. This also adds to the safety. And of course he feels secure knowing that his sister is safe, and how well they get along together is splendid. We need to see this, and the movie, at least twice a month I wager.

Have watched this millions of times but the intensity never fades. If you watch it in conjunction with the previous scene where Georgiana invites her to play, the immediate jump cut to Colin's look just knocks you over with its intensity. Very well-crafted build of love and understanding between the two characters.

Although there is no awkward, piano-playing gaffe for Georgiana or subsequent rescue by Elizabeth in Jane Austen's wonderful novel, I love the liberties that the BBC has taken with this scene because of THE gaze. The adoring gaze that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy share is beyond words. Having seen P&P too many times to count, I know in my mind that Mr. Darcy does get his Lizzie, but for me this gaze is the first delicious moment that I begin to believe in my heart that he may actually win her love!

This scene is one of the reasons this is the best adaptation by far. It’s not in the book, so it’s made up by the production. As someone who’s read this book 8+ times, this turned into one of my favourite scenes because it illustrates so many nuances that you can sense in the book but that’s hard to catch on screen.

Yes! For example, when the Gardiners perceive that Mr. Darcy is overflowing with admiration, you can imagine something like this. I don't mind a screen adaptation taking liberties that fill in gaps and enhance our experience of the story.

There's a similar scene in the book. It's when Lizzie and Mrs. Gardiner visit Georgiana and the Bingley ladies for tea. Much of Miss Bingley's dialogue in this scene is taken from that chapter. But, yes, ultimately this scene combines elements from a few different book scenes and makes up a few other elements, but ones that are still faithful to the characters' internal journeys.

I just don't understand why anyone would stray so far from the book. Sure, take some liberties here and there. I like the liberties they took in this miniseries. But there's a point at which the adaptation bears no esemblance to the book. What's the point?

I think perhaps the best job in this entire miniseries was done by the costumer. The fact that Lizzy and Georgiana are wearing similar gowns shows a similarity in their characters, and I especially love that Mr. Darcy wears trousers instead of breeches. This subtly shows that he's not so stuffy and old-fashioned as we might think, as well as the fact that he's much more relaxed around Pemberley than anywhere else!

If memory serves me correct, this scene was missing from the 2005 movie version. That's a big shame, because I feel that this is an important scene. Lizzy basically told Darcy that she will love, take care, and watch out for Georgiana like she's her own sister. If Darcy still had any slightest doubt about Lizzy at this point, it has been put to rest by her compassion.

@@Musicienne-DAB1995The OP was talking about this entire scene from the book chapter 45, which is in the 1995 version (the only difference is the piano scene), while it’s not in the 2005 version. The point is Lizzy is trying to help so that Georgiana won’t have to hear Wickham subtly mentioned anymore from Miss Bingley, and Darcy’s really grateful to her for doing that.

@SweetKraut I agree the last few seconds are the best. Power to Colin and Jennifer for being able to say so much without words. I think Elizabeth is saying "Don't worry, I'm here. I 'll watch over her." and Darcy's saying "Thank you. I love you." In those few seconds you get to see the characters really in tune with one another, partners in protecting Georgiana.
