I adore this movie so much, it gets picked on for accuracy a lot but, it's an "adaptation". I just love how down to earth it feels, it's shot beautifully, it has a great balance of subtlety and chemistry with the romance. Donald Sutherland plays my favorite version of Mr. Bennet, who just kills it in his final scene, so overjoyed to tears at his daughters happiness. I am also so tickled by this more socially awkward Darcy.😍

The movie also had the arduous task of not just adapting Jane Austen, but adapting a well-loved book in just 2 hours. And while it packs a lot into the movie, at no point does it feel overwhelming or overly rushed. In terms of pacing material, that's an incredible tightrope to walk, and the movie danced across it.

I went to the cinema knowing nothing about the story (I'm from Spain... Jean Austen is not a thing in school there).... I was blown away by the story and the cinematography... OUTSTANDING!

I love watching my people enjoy watching this movie especially for the first time. I've always thought this was the best adaptation. I have seen a film or movie adaptation of every single one of Jane Austen's work. When you love this movie it shows that you love theater, historical fiction, romance, tension, and Jane Austen in general

haha. She gives me Carol Kane vibes, especially from "Scrooged." She looks a little like Kane, too, so maybe that's what she's going for. It's strange but funny. haha

Your two “for f*ck’s sake(‘s)” were perfectly timed! Those moments and the hand flex did it for me, I just adore Matthew Macfadyen. His and Keira’s chemistry was stunning, and yes, it only gets better with a rewatch (esp. with knowledge of the text). So happy you enjoyed it! 😊

Mr Bennet is long-suffering with his wife and youngest three daughters. Fortunately, he has Jane and Elizabeth.

I mean Marry is not that bad (compared to Lydia and Kitty), so I think mom + Kitty and Lydia is the worst combination 😂

I feel not enough people pick up on/know that what makes Mrs. Bennett so frustrating isn’t so much her trying to marry her daughters off. It’s her embarrassing behavior and lack of general sense. Such as constantly talking about money, talking badly about Caroline, and getting super drunk. Not to mention, how easily she forgives Lydia for running off with Wickham once they’re married.

What people need to understand is there is ONE option for women. ONE. They must marry. Of course, Mrs. B is obsessed with it. She's worried to death about what will become of them. It's not like the girls can go off to college and have a career. Or just plain get a job. Their entire lives depend on having a man who can support them. If unmarried, "old maids" had to live with their relatives because they could not make a living themselves.

When it first came out, I had a free afternoon and went to see it. When it came to an end I went back to the box office and bought a ticket for the very next showing.

I think that the recent Red, White, & Royal Blue was inspired by this, with the "just two of them" moment at the New Years eve party and the Mr. Darcy/Alex in the rain moment near the end.

I really appreciate that you have read the book. Not many people doing reactions have. I'm a man in my mid 30s and I have read Pride and Prejudice. I'm not a fan of romance books, but I read Jane Austen for the same reason that I read Ernest Hemingway. I'm a proponent of reading important, influential works of history. I'm currently reading Sense and Sensibility.

In addition to this movie and the 1990's 6-part series, there is also a 6-part series, in black-and-white, from 1967. Gotta be a real Austen fan to watch that one, particularly as it looks like it was taped off the tv (for KZbin). And the 1940 black-and-white version that has its own charm. (In this first one, it followed a year after the blockbuster Civil War saga, Gone With The Wind, so they updated the era to the 1850's to get the women in those enormous hoop dresses.) I find it interesting to watch both this one and the '40 one, and try to figure out why this one is (or at least seems to me to be) more powerful.

She was NOT protecting him when she told Fitz that Darcy didn't dance at the party. Back them that was considered EXTREMELY rude.

It's weird because the very last scene isn't in the french version. The relationship between the sisters Bennet reminds me the one I had with my sisters when we were young (we're 4 girls including me and I'm the eldest)

Try The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan. It has the same rewatchability, although it's contemporary. But very romantic and the fashion is georgeous.

I believe that in that time period the scandal of Lida running off with Darcy would have disgraced the Bennet family and would have kept Mr. Darcy from marrying Elizibeth, the women he loved. So, he fixed it!

Same here. It's because she doesn't experience any growth or seem to understand what she's done. But I also feel slightly sorry for her. She's too young to understand the full repercussions of her actions and will spend the rest of her life paying for it. In fact, the only Lydia that doesn't make me want to pull my hair out is the version from the Lizzie Bennet Diaries because she actually has a character arc.
