Pride and prejudice takes place in early 1800 and marrying your cousin, expecially when you were a noble, was quite normal at the time. When you say what's wrong with Mr Darcy... Oh my where do we start. First of all I think we can all agree that he's a good man, but he's a noble so he has this toxic sense of entitlement that is sooo frustrating to Elizabeth (and all of us). Plus he totally has social anxiety so he tend to say things he doesn't really belive. I red the book multiple times (it's like my copying mechanism hahaha) and I think it's better explained in it obv, he really falls for lizzie because he's so used to everybody agreeing to what he says because of his social position. But she's like saaavage, she doesn't give a fuuuuu*. In some chapters they argue in a very very passionate way, basically every time they have an interaction hahaha, the movie doesn't really show it. In the end he act like an a** bc she's poor and her family is embarassing and he really tries to prove to himself that she's not worth it. So he looks at all her flaws but in the end he loves to be challenged by her. Ok, thank you for coming to my ted talk about Mr Darcy. Bye.

YES thank you for calling out the fact that he has social anxiety... he's got strong social anxiety and I never see people talk about it. Like half of his "rudeness" comes from that and from being misunderstood. Sometimes Lizzy goes out of her way to misunderstand him in the book, making assumptions about his meanings left and right.
@GreedyLiz2 жыл бұрын
@@creatingpulsars9979 yes, totally. He's so unused to people he doesn't know, yet they say it several times in the books. Mr Bingley's opinion about Darcy is so good exactly for this reason, because to his friends he's very loyal and protective. He really just doesn't trust people, expecially after what happened with Wickham! I mean I would be cautious too if one of my childhood friends tried to use my sister to get to my money! I always get so sad thinking about Mr Darcy loneliness... But he's totally a pain in the axe with that attitude ✨

My favorite character is Darcy all the way. He's actually quite complex. It's what he says himself, he's not good at small-talk. He doesn't like being in uncomfortable situations where he doesn't know what to say. That's why he seems to brusk. Lizzy challenges him on this intimating he needs to put in the effort and practice more. And you know what, he does it! Even when he thinks he'll never win her, he puts himself out to be polite to her aunt and uncle, to show her he took her words to heart and is doing better. He shows character growth.

I think you missed the point of the essence of this movie that Jane Austin put in her book. How hard it was for women of time and how society and it laws held women back. That marriage was a business deal and women couldn't marry for love in most cases. Jane and her sister Cassandra never had marriages as such in their own lives. This was Jane's Cindrella story, with ideal men who were accountable for their behavior, worked on themselves and then went back open to show it. The only power women had was to say yes or no. And seeing Charlotte's circumstances who settled so that she was protected from living like the actual Austin sisters. Jane Austin gave power to women through her writings and helped in giving awareness to her society with the veil of funny but real characters. This movie absolutely picked up that essence.

I think the reason so many people dislike Pride and Prejudice and can't undestand the hype about it it's because they review the movie/book acording to their modern view of the world. For exemple, the fact Mr Collins was willing to marry one of his cousins was such a shock and that was the only thing people would talk about throughout the movie, but you should undestand that 200 years ago that was common. The dynamics between woman X men and what behavior was expected also changes. A few dont get why the hand flexing scene was such a big deal, but it was propably expected and lady-like of Elizabeth to wear gloves (She doesn't and it contributes to form her personality), since direct skin contact was quite scandalous. Of couse everybody is alowed to dislike, like or even hate the movie, but it's interesting to contextualize yourself about the era things take place to be able to truly experience the film and rate it.

It's worth noting that that you're not supposed to like Mr. Darcy. Jane Austin was writing SATIRE. Mr. Darcy is a caricature of a type of young "gentleman" common at the time who believed that simply having wealth made one important, but made no attempt to be polite. In modern terms, Mr. Darcy is a trust fund kid or celebutante; he thinks he's better than others because he didn't have to work for what he has. This satire is more obvious in Emma, but all of Austin's novels suffer from the problem that the modern audience doesn't know what the contemporary audience did. Austin's original readers were lower-middle class people laughing at the dumb rich right before a major economic shift destroyed that whole way of life. The modern audience thinks these stories are supposed to be legitimately historical and people don't get the joke.
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF Жыл бұрын
yes and no. austen wrote what in her time were romcoms. yes, they involved some satire, but they _were_ 100% also meant to be romantic stories with happy endings, not just ridiculous stories to laugh at. she pointedly always gave her heroines romantic happy endings because she never got one herself (plus, considering the time period, they were just generally a very rare thing despite which class you belonged to, and she wanted her stories to have happy endings). mr. darcy is (or starts out as) a caricature you're not supposed to like yes, but grows into a person of more depth over the course of the story and as he changes his views, and he _becomes_ a character you fall in love with. no one was ever supposed to hate his character even after finishing the story. it's _NOT_ a satirical piece as a whole, and I'm not sure where you got that cynical notion from. you're more correct about emma, it was very much a satirical piece, but still at its heart a romcom. i think you fully misunderstand jane austen, her intentions, and her work. not surprising though, as you were never the intended audience in the first place.

Please stop thinking in modern terms about a story written in the early 1800s. Darcy is a man who grew up knowing he was going to oversee vast properties, the lives of not only whoever becomes his immediate family but his sister after his both his parents died and all the tenant families working on his properties. We are talking hundreds of people. We see his great effort to do that job well when He rides alone all the way from London to meet with his stewart a day early and discovers Lizzie lurking in his house during the tour. You forgot the very famous introduction Austen writes in the book but was left out of the film. He is enormously rich and a target for every scheming female he ever meets. Except Elizabeth. She is a well-read self-educated person who constantly observes life. Just so happens she overheard Darcy trying to protect himself from Bingley's well-meaning efforts to get him to have some fun at the dance. Charlotte is with her so she tries to make light of it. And she made an erroneous snap judgement. Darcy sees Lizzie is unlike other girls and because he has been treated special all his life, he is feeling the pressure to make the right choice of wife. Where's some empathy here?

Many have theorized that Mr. Darcy is autistic. As a 41-year-old autistic man myself, I support that theory, and can absolutely confirm that no amount of "practice" makes it any easier to meet new people. As for his attraction to Lizzy, he made a connection with her on an intellectual level when she visited their home when Jane was sick. It's much longer in the book, where they have an extensive back-and-forth that actually made me giggle when I first read it as a teenager because I felt they were getting along so well together. I had to learn, like Darcy eventually did, that just because they may have been intellectual equals, it didn't necessarily mean that she liked him as much as he liked her.

This is one of my top favorite romantic movies. This is also one of three movies I have downloaded, that I watch whenever I travel. The thumb caress as he's helping Elizabeth step up to the carriage and his hand flex (due to the chemistry charge he felt by just a mere touch of her hand) afterwards, is beyond romantic.
@johnnehrich9601 Жыл бұрын
When Jane is first invited to the Bingley's, Mrs. Bentley realizes that if Mr. Bingley is not there, he would have taken their carriage. Therefore they could not "drive" Jane back home, so trying to get her stuck there would work. From what I understand, Mr. Collins is not (first cousin) to the daughters but to Mr. Bennet, meaning he is one step removed from being a first cousin. And the book refers to him as a "distant cousin," which could be quite FAR removed. However, in Gone With The Wind, it is stated that "the Hamiltons always marry their cousins," i.e., Ashley marries Melanie, and it wasn't thought scandalous, just not too healthy. Let's not forget that Lady Catherine's daughter was promised to Darcy in infancy, and Lady Catherine is Darcy's aunt. That would make them really cousins. In the final scene with Darcy coming across the field in the early morning, you question how long it would take him. He would be staying with the Bingley's, and when Lizzy walks there early in the book/movie, it is described as three miles away. Three miles an hour is an average walking speed. But don't forget he couldn't walk there before dawn as he doesn't have a light of any kind and over fields is very rough in the dark.

Pleeeeeeaase watch the BBC miniseries with Colin Firth! It's more faithful to the novel, so the characters are far richer. Regarding Creepy Collins: Mr. Bennet never had a son and his estate could only be passed on to a male heir, soooo his cousin (and closest male relative), Mr. Collins, is the presumptive heir to the estate. That's why the douchebag thought he was doing the Bennets a "favor" by trying to marry one of their daughters.

Yes, and this is why Mrs Bennett is so manic about marrying her daughters off. She needed to make sure they would be cared for after Mr Bennett passed. Don't look up the actor's names in the middle of the movie -- you're suppose to be immersing yourself in the charactors, the times and location of the movie. Now you've gone and biased yourself with Donald Sutherlands filmology. Every work of art is suppose to be an independent universe (sequels and prequels exempted)

Wickham is wicked. Wonder if Jane Austin gave him that name intentionally. I like to think so

So Mr. Darcy does not like fake people. Which is why he’s so stiff at the first public ball. All these people are putting on a show for him and his high status. The movie doesn’t really show these hypocrites too much outside of ridiculous mama Bennet’s comments. Elizabeth also doesn’t like fake people. Including her second cousin Mr. Collins - so fake! (Even today marrying cousins is not going to beget genetic differences compared to the random general populace as long as people don’t do that for like five generations straight.) A common saying back in the day is, “You cannot know someone within a fortnight (two weeks)” and Elizabeth realizes Wickham is a fortune hunter loooong before she visits Charlotte and Mr. Collins and is told his backstory by Mr. Darcy. Wickham starts pursuing a rich heiress soon at the next public ball after the Bingleys and Mr. Darcy leaves, instead of pursuing Elizabeth, and she’s chuffed. It also helps her believe Mr. Darcy’s story soon after she reads it. Mr. Darcy fell in love because every polite thing Elizabeth said seemed like an encouragement. In the book he thinks Lizzie is telling him where to secretly meet her in the garden walks, when she was trying to hint at where he should *avoid* going so she can be alone. He totally thought she’d accept his first proposal!!

Mr. Darcy is introverted and he is communicating discomfort. Lizzy doesn’t help with that because she perceives him as pompous and arrogant. You know a typical rich man. Also in typical fashion women beat up on introverts. Lizzy is beating up on people who are not going to fight back. She is a bully.

Hi Hana! Valentine's Day is coming again... Could you react to the P&P BBC miniseries? I think it's even more loved by book fans for having the time to hit all the important parts of the story. Also, Colin Firth and Jenifer Ehle are amazing. IMO, this version is more cinematic and artistic, the miniseries is more realistic and satisfyingly complete and unhurried. I feel like a lot of this version has a very rushed feeling to it, just flying through the story and dialogue.

You say you bet social anxiety yet are constantly berating him for …..showing signs by being SOCIALLY AWKWARD? Christ. You seem incapable of seeing this film AT ALL in the time it was written. You must know little to no history. Trust if you were born back then….in this or similar situations you wouldn’t the person you are now. You can’t seriously think that? Society and family and expectations and most of all, JUST REALITY……has a MASSIVE MASSIVE effect one’s entire personality…..

it's been a minute since i filmed this video but at the time i really didn't have much knowledge of the history. historical media especially before the 1950's wasn't really my jam so the regency era was very new territory for me (and still is despite adding a few more movies and shows to my roster). of course context matters and clearly i was missing context when i reacted to this movie which is why i have those reactions lol

You need to watch the Colin Firths version of P@P1995 you will see much more of Darcy's Life and a better Wickham and Collins and Mrs Bennett Matthew has the Rain Mist Dance scenes which are just brilliant both flim and TV series are brilliant but in different ways Colin's Lake scene has gone down in TV history
