What I like most about that, it’s not even romantic, yes they’re focused on each other but they’re still only judging the other. They only see the surface, the first impression, and nothing else. Their knowledge and curious search bears no light to their true character. They know nothing, their attempts thus far have been fruitless and the results of learning more about the other are as empty as the room they dance in. So to later see the ending where it is again, just the two of them, the world shrouded in darkness but they have each other, is the sweetest thing. An ending full of the love they had earned over time and built for each other.

That is actually how my Mom and Dad got together in Denver during WW2! They had met several years before, and Mom was not long after transferred to Chicago. When she got back to Denver she happened to have been out on a blind date who was an octopus. She spotted my Dad sitting at the bar and asked him to take her home. Three months later, they were man and wife. Life imitating art. ❤️

It's worth remembering that he's the one who upset her in the first place, but this is a delightfully humanizing and sweet moment. He only meant to spare her some pain, and instead caused some, and he regrets it and wants to do what he can to make it right. @@adambrown5894 If a woman back then wasn't married, or didn't become married, she was considered less than nothing. Due to the entail, the girls would have no home, no money, no prospects. You have to feel for Mrs. Bennet. She didn't produce any sons, but a number of girls who husbands would need to be found for, if the girls were to have any standing, and were to be taken care of, once their parents were gone. Silly she may have been, but there were reasons for her behavior.

I absolutely love the cinematography of this movie. the scene where lizzy and Charlotte are laughing together and suddenly run into mr. Darcy but the framing stays at the girls' level so all you can see is just this unmoving black mass of shoulders and chest. It was such a great way to show how imposing and a bit intimidating he is. he's always just lurking and appearing out of nowhere like this strange mythological creature😂 and when the camera finally pans out to reveal his usual cold and unfriendly demeanor he does something unexpected like ask her to dance, then quietly slinks away again lol. Her dumbfounded response is so perfect.

Agreed. The long shots almost make you feel like a guest at the ball, observing the interactions between others as you make your way through the rooms. So many shots in this film were breathtaking. They could have just edited together all of the footage of people walking through fields and I still would have enjoyed it

this might just be me but the book and 2005 movie both give me the impression that Mr. Bennet had a deeper understanding of each of his daughters, moreso than their mother had. especially the scene when he talks to Elizabeth about how he though she hated Darcy. he tears up cause he knew she would never settle for anything less than true, undeniable love. but he's also aware Lydia and Kitty want to, i'll just put it in a modern light, have fun with flirting and that they dont expect the kind of intimacy that Lizzie was seeking. to the point of letting Lydia go to Brighton. he understands how she feels and respects it enough to not force her to stay at Longbourn when she wants to leave. their mom mainly sought out the financial and social benefits of her daughters' being wedded.

To say this movie is a piece of art is an incredible understatement: from the breathtaking cinematography to the amazing cast, it is a feast for the senses. I drink in every delicious moment of tension between Darcy and Lizzy, how he stares at her, longingly, how she catches herself both puzzled yet drawn to him. The ballroom scene is just exquisite in its intimacy and choreography.

This variation of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s dance has always been my favourite, not only because of the soundtrack (which I believe to be MARVELLOUS), but also because it shows what a pivotal point it actually was - if Darcy had bothered to be honest with Elizabeth about Wickham’s character there and then, she would not have been so prejudiced against him, and might not have rejected his first proposal in the way she had. Alas, he failed to grasp this golden opportunity. Then again, while he was still ruled by pride, and her by her prejudice, they were still clearly passionate about each other here - one passionately torn between his growing love for her and his pride demanding what he believed was expected of him, and the other passionately firm in her prejudice against him due to his own undeniably bad behaviour, and passion is most definitely NOT indifference, which is the true opposite of love.

Well said. Passion is an important part of romantic love - and is, somewhat paradoxically, not so different from anger. Which is why so many lovers in movies start off fighting and being angry at each other. Might be destructive in real life, but at least you're not friendzoned 😅

So many films try to have “artistic” moments and fail. They either go out of context from the source material (even with artistic license) or overdo it to the point it loses its charm. There’s no emotion, no sincerity. Here, that artistic moment, when they are suddenly alone in the room, makes so much sense within the context of the book and their characters. Also it’s beautifully subtle, not at all overdone. Their chemistry ties it all together and makes it work. What a masterpiece!

I enjoy the contrast between the way she danced with mr. Collins as with mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins it's one of avoidance and to not engage him in conversation or eye contact. In contrast with mr. Darcy it's filled with conversation intense eye contact and a hint of contention or hostility. Mr. Darcy can see that she's not all caught up in his wealth and status. That she is a woman who has a mind of her own and it's not afraid to express what she thinks and feels. There are so many complexities wrapped up in this scene it's wonderful

Gosh i love the comparisons of when Lizzy is dancing with Mr. Colins and Mr. Darcy. When she’s talking while dancing with Colins, their conversation is messy and all over the place; it keeps going in and out. But when she’s dancing with Darcy, their conversation is fluent and clean, and they don’t stop or pause while conversing. Poor Mr. Bingley in this scene! He can only dance with Jane for the maximum of two dances this evening, and as the host, he would probably have to at least invite a few ladies to dance out of courtesy. And one of dance is spent with Jane totally ignoring him and trying to talk to Lizzie the whole time. 😂

And Jane would surely be also getting many other request. Though their attentions are always glued to each other, they are still not getting enough time to actually hang out!

Just realised that Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet were the only ones not wearing gloves in the dancing scene. Makes it all the more intimate considering, in those times, proper manners dictated that hands be gloved and any naked skin contact(even hand contact) was equivalent to second and third base.

Still the best P&P movie, or any JA movie ever made. The scenes are so raw and vivid, unlike previous versions that seem so staged. The cinematography, scene selection, and color grading are beautiful and the best of what modern film technology can do. Kierra Knightley is so easy to fall in love with in this roll. This felt like the golden era of period film making, where Knightley did a series of films for Focus Features.

At the very beginning of this scene Elizabeth is turning anti-clockwise* as she searches low and high for Lieutenant Wickham. The camera goes around her clockwise giving you the feeling that you are searching for someone as well. Brilliant directing. *British term Crazy long and very complicated shot as well. Tons of extras gorgeously dressed and surprisingly complicated choreography. First-rate filmmaking.

I read the book again and this one is very little like the book. The BBC version is much closer... but they also had 6-ish hours to accomplish that. If I decide it's an "adaptation",I can appreciate this one more... the cinematography is fabulous. Donald Sutherland is a delight as Mr. Bennet. Charlotte is more fun. Elizabeth and Darcy are electric, and Dench is a formidable Lady Catherine.

I adore this film and the tension between them. Mr Collins annoying character is brilliant. I thought it was a hilarious touch when he was standing behind D'Arcy and trying to get his attention, D'Arcy turned and Collins practically ducked under is elbow...made me laugh out loud 🤣
