Hey primal, i had a little crazy thought. How a bout a 1 Gf=1 character Run. Like, u can just use 1 GF on 1 active member the whole game along. I thought, there are 16 GFs, how to divine them in 4 quarters with 4 chooseable GF for 1 person. You can only junction one, when u fill up the quarter. So 3 of ur GF quarters are in use. Could be a funny Run. How do you think? Maybe someone add some ideas into...

“GFs only” is basically the way 10 year old me played this game at launch before I understood the Junction system at all. I couldn’t get past Edea at the end of Disc 2. I never actually beat the game until roughly 20 years later 😅

This may be something for a futures Challenge, Beating FF12 Zodiac ags with only 1 character used, (you can use any character you want upon unlocking all, tho I guess the most interesting to use for this would be Fran since she has the lowest overall stats)(You can also spice this up yourself if it may be to easy, anyways would love to see a ff12 challenge run :) ) Or if true madness is due, FF12 Zodiac age all characters 9999HP and 999MP upon lvl99 (which is a HEAVY grind due to how lvl up HP+MP stat gain is handled). I had no idea that Eden could even get boosted to do 60k damage, I never really use GFs when I play the game. Now the real question what was worse? Ultima Weapon Summons only, or Ozma Trance only?

FF8 will always have a special place in my heart. My 13 year old me first played it in 2013, probably took like a week to complete, which to this day I still have no idea how I did it despite not knowing a single word of English back then. The only "walkthrough" I had at the time was from reading notebook pages that my overly enthusiastic close friend wrote down detailing where to go, what to farm, boss move set ... etc in a very comical way. I'll never forget how my younger me totally had a crush on Rinoa when I first saw her at the dance scene with Squall, how I summoned Shiva more than any other GFs because of how sexy she is, or the "emptiness" I felt as the credit draws when realizing that the journey has come to an end. Seeing you playing one of my favorite games always brings me joy and I hope you will continue to revisit ff8 from time to time.

There are 5: 1) Eden GF Summon 2) Shockwave Pulsar Blue Magic 3) Level 100 Cactuar GF Summon 4) Kamikaze Ability 5) Chocobocle Chocobo World Ability I don't blame anyone for forgetting/not knowing about #5, but there's really no excuse for whatever the 4th one that was ignored was, especially if you are going to make definitive declarations of fact like "only X many things in the entire game that can do Y."

My first ever playthrough of FF8 I relied heavily on summons. They were the biggest, easiest way to do damage in most cases. And this was on release so no guides, no Eden nothing. I didn't have end game weapons. Really didn't understand the game well. But I got to Ultimecia and could not beat her no matter what I did. I ended up scrapping that whole save and started the game over and built my characters to never need to summon a GF again because of that last boss fight. Walked in with Aura and everyone's best weapons and limit breaks and just ended her. It was rather cathartic.

To sum up if it's possible.... I'm pretty sure most of us did it this way if you were a kid when the game came out. Personally I remember telling my dad my GF's were all close to level 100 and I was only level 20. He was pretty confused and this was of course the time before low level play was the way to go, but ya kid me definitely set up a great endgame that was so simple because Summons gave you at least 2 hp bars and did massive damage... they are pure win 🏆

@Primalliquid92 woah awesome to hear from you 😅 I may be off on the levels but I remember training on the beach running quetzalcoatl as the only thing killing and then fighting the Trex with Shiva before ever going to Dollet and since the Xp boost on kills only went to the GF (and as a kid letting the other party member die to save time on button masshing) But your right I could totally be off. Was pretty sure maxing out a GF was about 50,000 XP and the Player was around 100,000 XP so only using GFs to get the final hit (with the Xp boost for last hit) and letting the other party member die I feel like the numbers might not have been too far off 😅 Honor to hear from you though, you've helped me complete so many games and try out my favorites in brand new ways 🙏 thank you so much

Just for funsies, I also did my own challenge run of this game (obviously not as hard as summon only, this is WILD lol). It was pretty fun and forced me to smartly use items and actual GF ability commands for once lol. If you wanna try it out, the rules are as follows: -No GF/Magic usage (including auto-abilities that involve magic casting like auto-haste) or equipping of those respective commands -Junctioning magic for stats is still allowed -No drawing, including from draw points (with the exception of drawing GFs) -Junctioned GFs are permanently junctioned and cannot ever be removed (this is probably the most constricting part of the run) -No using the "switch" menu command to swap character junctions or magic inventory -No character/boss/GF card modding (normal monster card modding is allowed) -Item -> magic refining is allowed -Use of magic stones is allowed as they are technically items (Flare Stone, Ultima Stone, Aura Stone, Holy Stone, etc) -GF abilities (like Shop commands, Med-Rf, [X] Mag-Rf, Card Mod, etc) are allowed so long as they don't conflict with previous rules. -All GF battle command abilities (Recover, Treatment, Devour, Mad Rush, Mug, etc) are allowed. -Teaching GFs new commands with ability scrolls is not allowed -SeeD exams separated by disc in increments of 10. -For an added bonus, Lvl 100 is required before fighting Ultimecia so you have to fight her also at Lvl 100. -The only allowed exceptions to magic usage are limit breaks (i.e. Selphie and Rinoa's limit breaks) and use of magic stones as mentioned above. It was good fun.

Using only summons? How do you think I did it before I learned how to junction? I really mean that btw. I got to the aliens on the ratnarok before my friend who was an ff8 expert took over. Killed the aliens. Took the ragnarok straight to the islands of heaven and hell and within an hour gave me 3 characters with a lot of 100 level magic as well as the Lion Heart.

Back in the day I used to Junction to attack / hp and spam GFS in boss fights. My party had as many GFs equipped as possible. It was a cheese strat for 5 year old me xD

This is pretty much how I played through the game the first time when it came out. I didn't understand the system at the time and found GF were the only thing that did decent damage. I wasn't as strict as this but for the most part it was a GF only run due to my ignorance at the time. The hardest fight was when Rinoa was stuck in Adel. I almost rage quit the game as a kid. This run here was much smoother than my first frustrating play of the game. I still play this regular every few years or so, because it's a lot of fun. Frustrating plot holes aside, it doesn't ruin the game.

When you were fighting ultima weapon I was thinking wouldn't it help to get Phoenix to maybe give you random second chances if the party wipes, it wasn't until the Iron giant portion that I remembered that you get Phoenix via the Phoenix pinion, ie an item. Good reminder that its been too long since I played this game.

For my very first playthrough of FF8, I did a summon heavy run. It ended at Adel. The game had long since stopped making sense, my party was overlevelled, and I actually hate Rinoa. Never bothered to finish the game or start over.

I think its actually possible to kill Red Giant with Odin I vaguely remember doing it by chance when I was a kid. You just need to get odin after the Seifer fight so he does not turn into gilgamesh :D.

Very surprised you didn't use the No-J strategy for unlocking the first ability in Ultimecia's castle - a low level Tri-Point has extremely low max HP, low enough that a high level Gilgamesh Excalibur can almost kill it in 1 hit. You have considerably better survivability options than a No-J game does, so even if you need Gilgamesh to attack 10 times it would still be super fast and easy. This would've been way easier than Return Damaging Red Giant for hours.

Using Carbuncle against Cerberus isn't an auto-win. He can still use Tornado and Quake that can't be reflected and will still damage you. Unless he can't use those at some absurd low level that you happened to get him at >_>

Funny thing is, when I first played this game a kid, this is almost exactly what I ended up doing. Not because I wanted a challenge, but because I hated the fact that you had to fight monsters to upgrade weapons. I thought it was utterly boring. I made it as far as the Adele fight without upgrading a single weapon and just depending on summons the whole time to fight...but theni had to ho bavk ans upgrade, much to my utter boredom.

Something that makes battles really easy, if done since the begining of the game, is trying to do the "Contrived Finish" achievement. If Squall doesn't level up, monsters won't either. Unless you're fighting non exp rewarding battles, keep Squall dead in your party. Level up the other characters and you'll cheese through the game easily.

Did they change it in the remake? In the og game enemies always did the calculations for their level based on the highest level in your team.

Havne't watched video yet. Here's the way to do it. 1) get to dollet mission 2) have Seifer power level Ifrit/Quetz/Shiva. kill off zell/squall so they stay low level. 3) keep everyone else low level 4) you now have level 99 gfs against level 7 enemies. GG. Oh wait, want to do this for the other GFs? Wait for Edea. Kill two other members, use Edea to level your other GFs at that time. You now have a lot more 99 gfs and should still be fighting enemies that are around level 7-10.

Ironically, Diablos ends up, pretty much, being the most powerful GF since he deals damage proportional to his level. This usually means that he'll be dealing the damage cap consistently after a certain level. Yeah, Eden can break the limit, but you don't get it until Disc 3, hampering its utility. Plus, Eden's animation is so long, it's totally not worth it, normally. 2nd best is most practical, apparently.

I got all the way to the final boss with only using GF as a 10 year old because the whole junction thing didn't made sense to me at the time. Unfortunately I did not beat ultimecia so I gamesharked it and beat her, but then later I learned how to junction and it became one of my favorite final fantasy along with Zell's OP limit break doing 450k damage or something like that.

Now to do FF7 Summon only... The challenge starts as soon as you complete the materia tutorial with Barret in 7th Heaven. From there, you transfer Master Summon Materia from another save to the challenge file via the SmugGlitch. You will need three of them in total. - Your characters cannot use any action except Summon. - You must manage your MP effectively. - You can equip any materia for stat bonuses, but you cannot use any other commands. - A character that joins before you can adjust their materia cannot battle (you must skip all their turns). - As you cannot summon during the flashback, this part is exempt from the challenge. - No items in battle. i know... but the timer is only 20 minutes, the fight with the final tonberry and tonberry king took 22 minutes, so the timer would have ran out without killing odin
