2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Diesel | Review and Drive

The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a one of a kind type of truck. It truly doesn’t have a direct competitor. Sure the Tacoma TRD PRO is extremely capable but it’s a bit more civilized than this ZR2. I was impressed with the on road manners of this truck just as much as anything else. Although I couldn’t go off-road, I plugged in some video from Chevy where it’s off road. This truck has big tires, good approach and departure angles, ground clearance, and an awesome suspension to put together a complete truck. Although we have the Duramax diesel ZR2 you can get the 3.6L V6 that I tested in the Colorado LT before this truck. For a small or midsize truck, this is definitely one you should consider.

The ZR2 is an exceptional offering from Chevy. The interior, exterior, suspension, ground clearance, seats, the bed/box, the dials, tires, the diesel engine and the sportiness is all near perfection. Given the regular care, the Duramax diesel engines will run forever.

I ordered my zr2 with the v6 and lift kit and 35 tires.the guys I know with the diesel have been having issues with sensors on the exhaust system something to do with the EPA exhaust. I own a Rubicon jeep I won't get rid of it for nothing. But i am looking forward to my zr2 to come in.the ones that have been out off roading with us have impressed me alot so much i ordered mine.i going to out more skid plates and mine and a steel drive shaft and wench.

I have a 17' gasser, black. Love it. Wash it in the morning time by eve you can see the dirt all over again. NEVER getting a black truck again. Still love my ZR2 though!

You did a better job reviewing this truck than Doug DeMurro did. Just watched his review the other day and I was amazed how full of crap he was. Even FastLaneTruck got in the comments to tell him he was full of it and TFL is becoming one of the biggest car review channels on KZbin so its pretty bad when they go out of their busy schedule to call another big channel out.

The list of misinformation and omitted information goes on and on with the Doug review. Also he said it was the coolest midsized truck then gave it a 5 or 6 on coolness factor on his Doug score. Its ok to make fun of a vehicle. Its not ok to put misinformation out there. Especially since he is a professional reviewer and a writer for autotrader.com.

I'm torn. Like the seating position and front locker on the Chevy but the fit & finish on the Taco is leaps and bounds better (IMO) and available with a manual tranny. The Chevy looks too "plastic" and cheap in some areas. The Taco seems more well thought out. Which makes sense. It's been around longer.

Jon L Your looking for fit and finish on a truck? Ok. I still say the Colorado is better than the Tacoma, more hp and torque, payload, towing, 4 wheels disk brakes, rear and front locker. Only midsize offering a diesel engine.

ElJomoL fair points, although the ZR2 comes up short on towing. The regular Colorado, maybe... but the ZR2 has less than the Taco. And not really interested in the diesel. Rather have the pep in favor of the torque. Won't be doing much extreme rock crawling or towing much. IMO, fit & finish is indicative of quality in some ways. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-Chevy at all. And I like the seating better in the ZR2... but I REALLY want a manual gearbox.

At 3 minutes you say there are functional rock sliders... The Zr2 should have functional rock sliders from the factory, but for some reason they have been removed from the truck in this specific vehicle

Love the ZR2 and its on the list of things to drive next spring when I'm planning to replace my current vehicle. Definitely not interested in the diesel. $3,000.00 more to buy more expensive fuel and be slower on the highway (where it will spend 98% of its time)? No thanks. The V6 is strong and better suited to how you drive the bulk of the time.

The diesel has some decent speed. I test drove both gas and diesel but was impressed with the diesel more than the gas in terms of power and torque. It launched from a dead stop and handled very well on the pavement and in the dirt. Of course I couldn't take it out in the mud on the test drive, but I was impressed with the diesel. The interior really does need improvement though.

I'm torn between the gas or diesel engine. I drive about 36 miles round trip to work. The diesel would get better mileage but gasoline is cheaper per gallon.

Prime Autotainment yeah its actually more common than you think. I see a lot of guys on the ZR2 FB page talking about how they special ordered their trucks and when they went in to accept delivery the rock sliders weren't installed. Some people not noticing until weeks later. Others who bought it off the lot and had no idea it was missing the rock sliders until they got home and further researched the truck they just bought.

Prime Autotainment not a problem man. I've been saving up for the truck for about a year now watching every review I can find. The down side of that is I notice every piece of misinformation. But because you mentioned everything you did I knew you had actually done your research and didn't just grab a set of keys and start filming. Those guys I will straight up call out if they are full of shit. But you give a damn about putting out the right information so you get a pass on one or 2 slips😜. And a subscribe👍

The non ZR2 models can tow up to 7,700 lbs but ZR2 can only do 5,000 no matter which engine
