It's the first long trip in Peggy the Nissan Primera P11, so join us as we cruise along the M4 motorway. What's good and what's bad about this British-built Japanese family motor?
Apologies for the variable sound in this one. We were experimenting with different things.

The Nissan Note isn't really a beaded seat cover car. My Grandad had a beaded seat cover in his Metro, I never understood that or the go faster stripes he also added. The Venn diagram of go faster stripes and beaded seat covers must surely be , just my Grandad.

Modern (this term is obviously relative, I don't mean 1.0 3-cylinder turbo era) cars, even relatively big engined ones, can be surprisingly economical when sat at cruising speed on the motorway. Not unusual to see mid-40s in a Mondeo V6. Sadly, single digits are similarly possible when you give it the aforementioned beans, but it makes a great noise when converting money to noise.

You’re doing well with the Primera’s fuel economy. I must admit I haven’t undertaken the same exercise with the N15 Pulsar but I suspect it isn’t so good - that’s doing over 3000rpm at around 60mph. But it does go well pretty well through the rev range, and doesn’t mind being pushed along at 4000rpm (those GA engines are outstanding and last forever). I have to say I find the seats very good in the Pulsar, they’re firm and offer good support all round. Only thing is you feel like you’re sitting on the road when you’re driving, but then again I’m used to my Nissan Datsun ute and NV200 Vanette as they’ve been my daily rides. Thanks Ian and Miss H for sharing, and allowing me the opportunity to compare notes 😀

Good cruising car the Primera apart from the seats. That's what I love about my Qashqai work it hard on a slip road and it makes a wonderful noise, same with my Micras that I had once you planted it, built up the revs the engines would just sing. I find myself taking mine out down a bit of the A7 near my house from time to time and there is 3 straight bits with roundabouts and I come off and plant it slow down for the next roundabout and do the same and again and do the same again on the way back... Not sure what latest Nissan engines are like but not as good as the ones in the Primera and Micra

I was one of the 5 or so people who bought a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 5.8 litre (352) Windsor engine and the Trailer Tow III Package. On a straight cruise, 7 litres per 100 km, or 40 miles to the Imperial gallon, on a straight highway cruise. On a 70 litre fill, 1,000 km, or 625 miles. Impressive for a car rated for 6,000 pounds of trailer weight.

I am sure the seat comfort can be fettled in some way because Peggy seems to revel in the long distance cruise. As for the posterior, you will have to try several solutions to find what suits.

Seat comfort is really important to me. European manufacturers seem to get it right. Reading to Carmarthen in a (hired) C200 was fine, no numb bum! Stopped when the car suggested I have a coffee! I have also done many 1000 km days over the years here in Australia in a succession of Volvos, Volkswagens and Peugeots. Also a Bluebird and a Skyline, but Nissan Australia fitted Australian designed seats. I think their engineers knew something! Also did 4 hours in a Toyota 86. No problem. On the other hand , more than an hour in a Hyundai I30 was not pleasant.

I never found any problems with either of my P11's with seat comfort. Yes they are perhaps more German than French with not much cushioning but I'd get out the same as I got in . Quite a lot of adjustments available, so worth plying with those perhaps. Yes, motorway mpg very good and if yours has the computer you can see it go up as you drive. It doesn't take long for it to lose about 10mpg after you get back into town and 30 limits though. Clip the hanging mic to a sun visor maybe?

Never understood drivers who seem to think driving non-stop until the tank is dry is a badge of honour. Seat comfort is important and often overlooked. It's a reason when you get it right to stick with the same model especially if you've had bad experience with others. My Leon mark 3 is reasonable on that front. May ache a little after 3 hours or so but will recover with a short stretch and walk about. Alfa MiTo was the worst. Back ache set in after just 30 minutes and by 2 hours you were really uncomfortable. It then persisted for hours. Sold the car after a year as a result. Vauxhall Astra test drive 25 mins long and after only 15 slightly uncomfortable. No sale there then. Hyundai i20 hire car lacking in support. 1 hour wasn't good. Mazda 3. Odd one this. Uncomfortable after 30 mins, more so by 60 but by 2 hours things actually had improved. If a manual you need a good foot rest. Leon has only one for the left foot, no where to rest right foot on a cruise with cruise control on. Mark 2 Leon had one on each side. Why remove it? My focus mark 2 was also reasonable. Never had anything amazing in this respect. But I have traveled as passenger in BMW and Jags and been very comfortable. But the plush velor seats if the 90s Granada are probably my favourite

That's one of the most off putting things in a car if it has uncomfortable seats, in fact it's a real pain in the butt........ literally.

Not sure I like the rest of the car enough to try changing seats, or fitting beaded seat covers. It's a good car, but not entirely my cup of tea.

The simplest fix is to replace the whole car with a Volvo or a Saab. The best seats in the business.

HubNut´s other japanese car ( the Daihatsu ) has quite comfy seats although it´s a Kei car. I own one myself, they are not too soft, not too firm, just *right* :)

Turns out the speedo underreads quite dramatically, so an indicated 80 is necessary to hit 70.

@@hubnotes So you were probably only cruising at 65. Other traffic was whizzing past so they must have been well above the permitted speed limit which is what my point was.
