Victor Wembanyama & France Are Going To Break Basketball With This.. | Olympics News (Rudy Gobert)

France’s men’s basketball team, already having their ticket punched for the 2024 Summer Olympics, are in the process of playing exhibition games while the Basketball Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place. And in the meantime, these friendly games for France vs Germany, Turkey, etc. are giving us a first glimpse at the pairing of Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves on the court together. And as you might’ve expected, this duo is far more terrifying than we could’ve even imagined.
Let’s start with the France offense. The frontcourt of Wemby and Rudy for the French is absurd on almost every front. Whether it be regarding the pick and roll, high-low offense, even their isolation play, France clearly is going to be a force once the Olympic basketball games roll around.
And the same can be said regarding the defense for France. Having both Wembanyama and Gobert being able to serve as anchors at the bottom of the paint, the rest of this roster is able to act freely defensively. Wemby and Rudy are only the visible part of the iceberg. There are many exceptional players in France team. Bilal Coulibaly has a great basketball IQ and he is also a multirole player, able to aggressively defend and score when necessary. Mathias lessor is also a thought power forward defender. Exhibition? That's not the exact word, those are preparation games, and while the first was vs "almost on holiday" Turkey, that second was vs world champ and Olympics qualified Germany. OK they were missing a couple of players and they probably don't need as much tuning to their game as France does so they don't need to show all their cards (France and Germany will meet in the group phase of the Olympics tournament, and are set to play another friendly this week in Montpellier).. but still, they're not just for shows, they are the first game experiments of "Wemby's France", with a clear short term objective.
