Ownership of the Mavericks does not want to win a championship but what they want is to move the team to Las Vegas in the next two years. They believe that they can make more money with the team in a new stadium in Las Vegas in the long-term. They especially did not want to be tied to Luka at 80 plus million per year for the next five years. Most NBA teams know they do not have any real chance to win a championship and only a few teams are centered on winning championships, Celtics, Lakers. and Warriors. The Las Vegas "whatever's" will not be centered on winning a championship just making money.

This is all the Adelson family doing (the new Mavs owners) they own lots of casinos and hotels in LA, by sending Luka there not only do they avoid having to pay a super max contract, but Luka going to LA will bring a lot more people to the city, people who spend more on gambling and hotels (specially other millionaires), they couldnt care less about basketball, its all about the money (since they are also pushing hard to legalize gambling and casinos in Texas, owning the Mavs gives them credibility). Nico is taking the responsability but Im pretty sure he didnt want this, althogh he must have received a lump sum for pulling this off for the Adelsons. This trade was pure business and then they just embelished it with excuses to make it seem like it made sense.
