The hard white plastics they normally use, when turning yellow due to UV light from the sun, are actually having a chemical reaction making them far more brittle and prone to snapping. This is why they chose to use the softer plastic for those very thin extensions in the legs, my best guess anyway.

Personally, I don't think the scale is that big of a deal because of what they're doing with the pretenders. They're based on the original pretenders, but they've incorporated the pretender shells into the actual transformer, effectively creating brand new renditions for each of these characters. Since Hasbro's combining ideas and reinventing old characters, I think they have the leeway to play around with the size of them.

I think the main problem isn’t the design so much as the execution. Like, his alt mode is just the robot mode condensed into a brick. If they just added some tread details on the front legs or found a way to hide the feet it would’ve looked a lot more cohesive.

It seems worth doing just like a the missing ones from POTP are still something i'd like too. I hope they do neglect doing more core ones though they look so much nicer as a set and i'd be happy to see them keep doing them as core class - at least the initial 6 - but if they want to be nuts and have a go at Grimlock, Bumblebee and Starscream - i'd be interested to see that too - though perhaps in a bigger size. If they keep making the small ones that would be nice to complement the core Dinobots we are getting too as Studio Series 86 Core class releases.
@90lancaster2 жыл бұрын
@@HerohammerStudios Why would I want a core Class Skullgrin do you mean ? Well as I said to complete the set at the given size would be nice - - having one a load missing would be disappointing - just as it was with the missing pretender shells in POTP. As I stated before as many as possible Decepticons in the the Core class including The Pretenders would go nicely with the forthcoming Core Class Dinobots and also they can be used to populate your bases and playsets. I'm not saying that it has to be just the Pretenders - but since they started and since people responded positively to the 2 smaller ones more so that Skullgrin. Different sizes for different uses - I guess we all thought perhaps that Iguanus as it was implying they are small characters - maybe even like Rattrap size. ones. But with more main characters being made in that scale they can be seen either way now they can be seen as "little guys" like Rattrap, Exo-suit Spike or Wheelie. or they can be seen as a smaller representation of a normal sized Decepticon as with Megatron, Skywarp, Starscream, Soundwave, & Soundblaster and also Shockwave. I just happen to think they did something "fun" with Igunaus over all - even if tabbing him in can be a slight pain at times the idea is one I favour. But I also don't mind when the core class is used to represent a small character for use with bigger toys too.

I'm with you on the vehicle mode. All that complex engineering is wasted on a lackluster tank mode. The soft plastic is an oddity. I can understand the horns, but we've gotten parts way smaller and pointier than those swords in hard plastic. The leg hinge being soft plastic as well might be because of how thin and long that piece is. They're probably worried kids would easily break it, but then again, if so, they shouldn't have designed it like that in the first place. As far as scale though, I think it's kinda fun to have pretenders in different size classes. G1 accuracy aside, since they're already doing their own thing by mashing up the shells with the vehicles, Iguanus being smaller than Skullgrin makes sense to my brain.

I loved the designs of the Pretender shells, & always wanted Hasbro to give them the "Super Pretender" treatment (ie actually transform). But the rubber plastic not only in the swords, but as part of the robot's actual structure is a serious deal breaker for me. Its one thing to have it as appendages like spikes or fins, but there's no way this sculpt will survive unwarped for long. A shame, as I love Skullgrin in particular & am dying for a new one after that Straxus remold from a few years back.

Great review PvP! Gotta say that I agree with your somewhat harsh criticisms at the end. Hasbro was doing great in the WFC Cybertron trilogy but now it feels like they are losing a bit of their fire, which sucks since figures are getting more expensive at the same time. To save costs, I mostly stick to G1 characters from the cartoon now. Therefore in all of Legacy Wave 3 (Deluxe, Voyager and Leader), I plan on only getting Dead End and Pointblank. Hopefully things will improve in Legacy Year 2.

The one thing I wish he had was for his skullhead to be removable to reveal his normal robot face. That said, Hasbro did conduct a poll on whether or not fans wanted shells to come back more proper, and majority voted for them. If anything, they can at least utilize this figure as the core robot and do whatever they would do for the shell as a way to test out the waters.

The PVC bits in the leg assemblies are obviously because the piece needs to bend to allow the treads to actually reach the slots where they tab in in vehicle mode. Their position doesn't perfectly line up with where the legs are, so a solid plastic connecting piece wouldn't reach. It's kind of a lazy solution, they could have shaped the connecting pieces differently so they lined up properly, but I guess it works. I mean, I doubt fans are going to be rushing to buy this guy, seeing as how his altmode sucks and he's a really obscure character who's supposed to have a Pretender shell, so even older fans who know who he is won't be all that interested. EDIT: Actually, on closer inspection, the legs seem to line up properly after all and the PVC piece doesn't seem to be bending, so I don't know why hasbro decided to make that bit out of PVC. It's got nothing to do with yellowing though, there's plenty of white plastic on the figure anyway, and if they were that bothered they probably wouldn't cast so many figures in white plastic to begin with.

If it were up to me (and I've said this many times on multiple platforms) I would abandoned the current design philosophy completely. The pretenders would be released in their own sub-line. All the core robots would be redesigned to be core class and would have 3 modes: inner robot, vehicle, and cube-like backpack mode. The pretender shells would be based on the RED series figures and feature a hollowed out torso that can fit the core class inner robot in backpack mode.

Wow, what a G1 altmode! :P I'm much more impressed with the figure - in both modes, though that's still not much for the "tank" - seeing it on video rather than the previous stills. I might get this guy after all; I did like Masterforce a whole lot, and always regretted not getting any of the original toys. Blood (whose US name I can never remember, bomb-something) looks great back at Core class again too, and I'm really curious what they'll do for Gilmer/Submarauder. The Autobot Pretenders will probably just use their original robot and behicle animation models to base new toys on since they actually spent a fair amount of time in them, unlike the 'cons who were almost always shelled up. Maybe add some elements of the shell for more detail, since the originals were pretty plain, but engribbling the old animation look without needing to make major changes is something the design team should have well practiced at this point, considering just how long the CHUG lines have been running.

Robot mode is awesome. (BTW, I love how the collapsed horns form some kinda conquistador helmet-like shape) Honestly I don't mind the alt-mode at all, it's a concept alien hovertank/frigade that compact really well with articulation in the only place that matters (the turret). I can picture Skullgrin in alt-mode flanking an opponent as the smaller pretenders jump from its deck onto their victim. Scale-wise is not a problem either, I like some difference between my bots, even within squads: Iguanus strikes me as a speeder fighter not really meant for melee and it makes sense for him to be smaller of a much more bulky Skullgrin that, maybe because of his demonic ram skull and the blades, looks lie a heavy bruiser that would charge head on into battle uncaring of opposing fire. Now, the problem... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT RUBBERY SH*T? Did Hasbro decide to take the major problem from their horrible RED line and extend it to other lines? At least is not clear plastic, but still... the paint stripping in the pegs... I don't understand why it's there in the first place... on the blade, it is meant to draw attention to it, ok... but the pegs will stay hidden for almost all the time, either pegged into the figure's fists or in its threads! I'll still try to get the guy, I like the direction they have taken with the pretenders thus far and I can't wait to see your eventual review of Bomb-Burst.

Sadly, it seems to me a few things could have saved the alt-mode (and actually made the robot mode look better too). First and foremost: curves and angles - this design is so flat and square that it hurts both modes. That's actually one of the few things the G1 toy did right. Good curves angles and could have made the robot look more organic, and even the current alt mode look more armored and interesting. Next: Fold the legs to the side of the tank. Instead of such a long brick , you'd get something that has the proportions of an actual tank. Heh, meshing with the first point, if you curve the legs right you can get a natural flare to the back - also, that ends up putting that forward facing skull on the crotch front and center making it reminiscent of those skull tanks from Voltron - which would look pretty cool if you ask me. And of course, wheels - even a hovertank is more fun if it can actually seem to glide across the ground. It's a great idea with a cool transformation, but the aesthetics are poorly executed.
